Match report from futaa.com
Gor Mahia returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Mathare United on Thursday afternoon in what was coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto's first match in charge.

The defending champions suffered a humiliating second defeat last week when they went down 4-3 at the hands of Kariobangi Sharks, but they got their groove back against the slum boys.

Gor got off the blocks first and grabbed the lead after just three minutes when Charles Momanyi headed in a corner ball to set them on the path to victory.

K'Ogalo then sustained their pressure for the better part of the opening quarter and were rewarded with a second when captain Kenneth Muguna found the back of the net to double their advantage.

The hosts showed more grit compared to their last match, with their confidence on the ball and ability to exploit open spaces in Mathare's backline on display.

They could not find a third though as they went into the break leading 2-0.

Coach Salim Ali made two changes for the second period, with Lennox Ogutu and Dani Lual coming on for Alphonse Ndonye and Eugene Wethuli.

The changes seemed to reinvigorate the team as the visitors troubled Gor on a number of occasions,

One such attack saw the Slumboys get a chance to pull one back when Captain Chris Oduor was fouled in the box and substitute Lual easily converted to halve the scores.

Alphonse Onyango then ensured there was never going to be a nervy ending to the match with a third in the 86th minute.

There was late drama though as both teams were reduced to 10 men after James Kinyanjui and Nicholas Kipkirui were shown straight red cards

The win saw Gor move to 11th in the standings on six points, a massive 12 off league leaders KCB, who are yet to drop points after six games.

Gor though have three matches at hand and a chance to scale up the standings in the coming weeks.
