Gor Mahia came close to taking the lead in the fifth minute from a quick transition, but Jackson Dwang could not finish off Ebenezer Aasifuah's pass.
The 21-time league champions would then take the lead in the sixth minute through Assifuah, who connected Alpha Onyango's cut back past Maxwell Mulili.
Onyango had dispossessed Maxwel Kubasu outside the box, dribbled inside before putting a squaring the ball to Assifuah who had the little work of passing it into the back of the net.

APS Bomet reacted by staging a series of long range attacks, with Frank Mandela threatening to score in the eighth minute, but his header was gathered by Bryne Omondi.
The match was temporarily stopped in the 15th minute when Gor Mahia’s Frank Odhiambo and Mandela collided, both requiring on-field treatment to be able to return to action.
Charles Amonoo ambitious acrobatic strike in the 21st minute from a Dwang' corner went over the bar, as Gor continued with their persuit of a second goal.
Gor Mahia lost a golden opportunity to get the second when Shariff Musa, on a quick counter attack, lost his footing and what would have been a fine pass to complete the attack.
A minute later, Paul Ochuoga, straight from winning the January Player of the month, found a lose ball inside the box but his mid range shot went wide.
The series of chances continued with Enock Morisson header from a Dwang’ corner in the 37th minute.
APS would then get a chance in the 40th minute when Rodgers Kipkemboi shot over the har from a Philiph Wasai corner.
Bomet were back at it in the 44th minute through Hillary Juma whose goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner by Frank Odhiambo.
The resultant corner kick was wasted by APS as the half time whistle blew shortly after, with K’Ogalo taking a 1-0 lead to the break.
APS began the second half as the brighter of the two sides, benefiting from a flurry of corners and dangerous crosses into the box that were well collected by Bryne.
K’Ogalo’s first chance of the half fell on Amonoo who got to the end of a Bryton Onyona crosa, but his powerful header in the 52nd minute hit the side netting.
Amonoo would then be replaced immediately by Samwel Kapen, thanks to an injury
Edward Masembe would then come to the rescue of APS in the 57th minute when he recovered well to block a strike from Assifuah, who was already facing Maxwell Mulili in the APS goal.
The introduction of Kapen seemed another problem for APS, as the former Nairobi City Stars man was taking long throws that were a source of headache for the APS defense.
In a bid to chase the game, APS made a triple substitution, taking off Kipkemboi, Juma and Kubasu for Dickson Mwangi, Lawrence Kibet and Hansel Ochieng.
APS got a chance to level the scores in the 70th minute when Wasai dispossessed Frank, but the former Djugardens defender threw him off balance as he shot over the bar.
In the 80th minute, coach Charles Akonnor introduced Mike Kibwage for Assifuah as he looked to lock the game.
However, Gor went on to double their lead a minute later when Dwang found a loose ball in the box after APS failed to clear their lines and scored to open his Gor Mahia account.
The two-goal caution was short-lived as APS pulled one back in the 83rd minute through the returning Hansel who took his season tally against Gor Mahia to three goals.
In the 90th minute, Kapen was put on goal by Lawrence Juma and unleashed a ferocious shot but was denied by the crossbar.
