Mark Harrison tenure as Gor Mahia coach started on a winning note as the 19 time Kenyan Premier league champions beat Kamamega Homeboys 1-0 in Thika on Wednesday.

The win marked an end to Gor Mahia’s eight match winless streak in the league which also ensured they cede the league title they have won for the last four consecutive year.

It was not at easy win though, Homeboys could have easily walked home with the three points had they converted the two first half penalties awarded to them

Allan Wanga and Francis Omondi failed to convert two penalties awarded to Homeboys. Gor Mahia stand in keeper Samuel Njau saved both the spot kicks in the fifth and 32nd minutes respectively.

It was Sydney Ochieng’s 25th minute strike that was however to separate both sides and hand Gor Mahia the much required win than now puts them on 40 points (excluding the three docked points by the Football Kenya Federation).

Harrison, the new Gor Mahia coach was unveiled on Monday and sat in the bench in the game against Homeboyz.

“It is a good start I may say. But we will need to rebuild this team to go back to the top,” the Briton said.

“I have seen quality today, but this is not what we need to win a championship. There is so much to be done, but at least we have some time to work on it without much pressure given we are no longer in the league race,” he added.
