The Sugar Millers needed an improved second half display to dispatch K’Ogalo and end the season on a high

Nzoia Sugar sealed a double over Gor Mahia as they secured a 2-1 win in their final match of the FKF Premier League 2020-21 season at Ruaraka grounds on Sunday.

The Sugar Millers were forced to wait until the second half to score the opener in the 57th minute courtesy of Kevin Wafula before Joseph Mwangi ensured they sealed a double over K’Ogalo for the first time ever in the top-flight after a well-taken goal in the 66th minute.

Gor Mahia started the game on a high note with Alpha Onyango coming close to open the scores in the third minute but his well-curled shot from the right side of play went inches wide.

The Sugar Millers responded in the 13th minute after Hillary Simiyu combined well with Kevin Juma but as the former tried to pull a trigger towards Gor Mahia goal, defender Harun Shakava moved quickly to intercept the ball and kick it out for a fruitless corner.

In the 21st minute, Karim Nikiema almost put K’Ogalo ahead after racing to meet a through ball from Ernest Wendo but before he could control the ball, Nzoia keeper Benson Mangala came out quickly to make the save.

K’Ogalo, who were missing the services of regular scorers Tito Okello and Jules Ulimwengu, squandered another open chance in the 33rd minute when John Macharia set up Nikiema but the latter’s effort could not trouble Mangala.

With the game heading to the half-time break, Nzoia’s Juma was yellow-carded after a reckless tackle on Onyango and from the resultant free-kick, Shakava rose the highest to power a glancing header which went inches wide.

In the 57th minute, Nzoia took the lead when Kevin Wafula unleashed a shot from midrange and it caught goalkeeper Gad Mathews napping and in the 66th minute, they doubled their lead as Joseph Mwangi slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.

Nzoia, who had won the first round meeting 2-1, means they have secured their first double over the outgoing champions.

In another season ender, Gor Mahia rivals AFC Leopards ended the season with a 3-2 defeat against Kakamega Homeboyz.

It was Ingwe, who scored first courtesy of Austin Odhiambo in the 23rd minute and they doubled their lead in the 25th minute when lead striker Elvis Rupia set up Bonaventure Shaka to find the back of the net.

In the 36th minute, AFC Leopards suffered a blow after Brian Wanyama, who was impressive for the side until then, picked up an injury and was replaced by youngster Caleb Olilo.

Homeboyz reduced the deficit in the 44th minute when Ingwe defender Robert Mudenyu scored in his own net under pressure to clear a cross from Shami Kibwana.

Kibwana then leveled scores for the visiting side after notching home in the 60th minute but they were not done yet as Stephen Etyang sealed their comeback in the 82nd minute for a 3-2 win.
