Supercup: Gor Mahia lose to Tusker on penalties

Post by faraja »

Are Gor Mahia ready for the new season? Fans will find out as Kogalo face an acid test against Tusker on Wednesday. Not much is known about Gor Mahia's current form. The transfer season has had little fanfare and Gor Mahia lost in a friendly match to the club's youth team last week.

Report from the Nation
League Champions Tusker play Betway Cup winners Gor Mahia in the 2021-22 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Super Cup at Thika Sub County Stadium on Wednesday.

The match, which kicks off at 1pm and acts as the curtain raiser for the new season, will be played behind closed doors in conformity to the strict measures put by the government to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus

The new season kick offs this weekend after a one-month break with Tusker favourites to add to their 12 titles.

K'Ogalo are the record winners of the Super Cup having bagged it six times (2009, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020), since its inception in 2009. On the other hand, Tusker won the trophy in 2012 and 2013.

The last Super Cup was played at the start of the 2019-20 season where Gor beat Bandari 1-0 courtesy of Lawrence Juma's goal.

Last season's clash was not played due to the coronavirus pandemic and there were also no Betway Cup winners as the competition was not played to completion as Covid-19 disrupted the 2019/20 season.

The latest meeting between Gor and Tusker in the Super Cup was in 2017 where K'Ogalo emerged victorious after edging out the brewers 1-0 at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

Tusker beat Gor 2-1 home and away in their league meetings last season.

New Gor Mahia coach Mark Harrisson will be looking to lift his first silverware since replacing Portuguese tactician Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto late July.

Harrisson, 60, led Gor Mahia in five matches towards the end of last season and won two, drew twice and lost once.

Gor, who have had their Fifa transfer ban lifted after settling debts owed to former coach Steven Polack, Tanzanian Dickson Ambudo and Uganda's Shafiq Batambuze, have not been active in the transfer window.

They have already acquired the services of former Kariobangi Sharks forward Peter Lwasa, former Wazito defender Dennis Ng'ang'a, Congolese striker Yangayay Sando and Malian keeper Adama Traore.

The club has been going through financial difficulties, which has hindered its quest to sign big names, as has been the norm in previous years.

Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava told Nation Sport that they are out for a bright start after a disappointing campaign last season, which saw them finish eighth.

"We have trained well and want to begin the season well. We shall fight and lift the title which has always been ours before. Tusker is a good team, but we are also physically fit and ready to stop them," Shakava, 27, said on Tuesday.

Fresh from advancing to the first round of the Caf Champions League after a 4-1 aggregate win over Arta Solar 7 of Djibouti at the weekend, Tusker are full of confidence.

"We shall see how it turns out, but this is football and any coach pushes for a win in every game. No injury concerns for us and our focus will be to win and start our title defence with another trophy in our cabinet," said Tusker coach Robert Matano.

Tusker have reinforced their squad by signing 12 players and releasing 11 others.

Defender Charles Momanyi, Joshua Ibrahim, John Njuguna, Rodgers Ouma, custodians Brian Bwire and Patrick Matasi are some of the players who have been roped in by the brewers.

On the other hand, Rodgers Aloro, Mike Madoya and their last season's top scorer, Henry Meja, are among the players who have left the club.

Tusker Wednesday edged Gor Mahia 8-7 on post-match penalties to win the Football Kenya Federation Super Cup.

Both sides settled for a 1-1 draw in regulation time before the brewers claimed victory in a dramatic shoot-out through Kalos Kirenge.

Samuel Onyango opened the scoring for Gor Mahia with a penalty in the 54th minute before Ibrahim Joshua equalised for Tusker in similar fashion two minutes later.

In the lottery, Sydney Ochieng, Dennis Ng'ang'a, Frank Odhiambo, Sando Sando Yangayayah, Philemon Otieno, Benson Omala and Gad Mathews converted for K'Ogalo while Alpha Onyango, Fred Nkata and Earnest Wendo missed.

Tusker's Monyi and Humphrey Mieno blasted their penalties as Daniel Sakari, Boniface Muchiri, Joshua Ibrahim, Clyde Senaji, Christopher Orchum, Brian Bwire, Jimmy Mbugua and Kalos Kirenge all scored.

Tusker coach Robert Matano said he has a lot of faith in the current squad and backed them to not only retain the title but also upset Egyptian giants Zamalek in the Caf Champions League. The brewers have signed 12 players to strengthen their squad and released 11 others.

"I decided to give my new players a chance in this game to assess them ahead of our opening league fixture against AFC Leopards. We have a good squad depth and I'm impressed with the way they played. However, there are still some areas we need to perfect on and continue gelling together," said Matano.

"They are new players and every player is still finding their momentum and rhythm. We shall get better in the league," he added.

Gor Mahia tactician Mark Harisson, who will now take charge at K'Ogalo for his first full season, praised his charges for displaying a good game.

The 60-year-old British coach, who was appointed in late July, said he expects a good season, asserting that he has good players who have what it takes to win the league.

"I anticipate a good season as this great club looks to win back the league it lost last season. Despite being 10 men in the game, you couldn't see much difference in the game. We still attacked and wasted a few opportunities," said Harisson.

"We were told a week ago the league is commencing this weekend and have only trained for 10 days before this game. I'm optimistic we shall pick up and win our matches," he added.

The match was a curtain-raiser for the 2021/22 season which kicks off this weekend.

Gor have a tough tie against last season runners-up KCB at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani while Tusker and former giants AFC Leopards lock horns at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

This was the second trophy for Tusker within a month after winning their 12th league title on August 22.

Both sides used the game to test their new players.

Gor fielded Dennis Ng'ang'a, Peter Lwasa and Congolese import Sando Sando Yangayayah. Other new faces in K'Ogalo's bench were Boniface Omondi and Malian custodian Adama Keita.

Tusker, on the other hand, rung changes in the squad which edged out Arta Solar 3-0 last weekend at Nyayo National Stadium. Matano only maintained Boniface Muchiri in the squad, giving new signings their debuts.
