Gor Mahia edge Sofapaka 1-0

Story from Pulse Live
Gor Mahia continued from where they left off before the international break as they beat Sofapaka 1-0 to deepen Batoto ba Mungu’s relegation fears.

Defender Sylvester Owino scored the loan goal in the 49th minute at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos and the champions held on to claim maximum points even though they had further chances to extend their lead.

With coach Johnathan McKinstry returning to complete the season with K’Ogalo before taking over the Gambia national team fully, the tactician fielded a strong line-up with goalkeeper Kevin Omondi, defenders Joshua Onyango and Geoffrey Ochieng, midfielder Austin Odhiambo and striker Benson Omala among the big hitters who started.

However, Sofapaka made life difficult for K’Ogalo and ensured a goalless draw at halftime but they could not hold on for long as McKinstry’s men broke the deadlock four minutes after the break.

Chris Ochieng and Mark Shabaan had further chances for Gor Mahia but they could not convert.

Defeat leaves Sofapaka in a precarious position as they are placed 16th on the table with 32 points, same as Shabana, but with a worse goal difference.

Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno’s men must win their remaining two games to fend off Muhoroni Youth and get at least the relegation-playoff spot if they cannot secure their place in the top flight outright.

Sofapaka will be encouraged by their upcoming fixtures, an away match against fourth-placed Nairobi City Stars, who have not won any of their last five games, before closing the season with already relegated Nzoia Sugar.
