Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have suspended 10 of their players for one week for missing training without permission.

The players include evergreen George “Blackberry” Odhiambo, Dennis Ng’ang’a, Boniface Omondi, Alpha Onyango, Sydney Ochieng’ Ernest Wendo, Benson Omalla, John Ochieng and Austin Odhiambo.

A letter signed by Gor Mahia secretary Sam Ochola has given the players seven days to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

However, an official who did not want to named revealed that George, who is viewed as the ringleader of the group, will be released by the club.

Ochola said they were focused on reducing the bloated squad and promoting talented players from their youth squad.

Gor is still serving a Fifa transfer ban for failing to pay salary arrears to their former players. The ban ends in January.

“It paid the suspended players half salaries for July because we don’t have enough finances now. However, they were paid allowances from the Mombasa trip and other small incentives. The league is just a few weeks away and once our sponsors start remitting money to us, this issue will be solved,” said Ochola.

Suspending 10 players right before the league starts is madness. Players must be paid or FIFA ban will be extended.

Blackberry is demanding an apology
Gor Mahia’s centre forward George “Blackberry” Odhiambo has demanded an apology from an official of his club for tainting his image.

Odhiambo, who did not name the official, Sunday told Nation Sport said it was unfair of the official to accuse him of being the ringleader of a go-slow at the club that has led to suspension of 10 players for missing training without permission.

On August 4, Nation Sport reported that 19-time Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia suspended 10 players for absconding training.

The club subsequently issued the players with letters of suspension.

“If indeed the official is sure of what he said at the time, then why didn’t he go on record? The said official should come out and apologise to me,” Odhiambo said.

“But it should be known that after we had attended a training at Camp Toyoyo grounds before the team travelled to Mombasa to play Coast Combined last month, our team captain Philemon Otieno assembled all the players in the presence of the team manager and we discussed the issue of salaries.

At the forum, all players shared their predicaments as far as salaries are concerned. It’s therefore unfair for the official to zero down on me. The comments will affect my brand.

Even if there was a club interested in signing me in the future, the club would have second thoughts after comments made about me, so I want the official to come out and clear my name,” the Kenyan international added.

Gor Mahia beat Coast Combined 1-0 at the Ronald Ngala Stadium in Mombasa a fortnight ago in the friendly match organised to mark the unveiling of the stadium funded by Mvita Constituency Development Funds.

After a short spell at Tusker FC, the 29-year-old Odhiambo rejoined the record Kenyan champions this year on a two-year deal that comes to an end next year in December.

“On Saturday, the 10 players who had been suspended by the club met at the chairman’s office in Upper Hill, where we also met the club officials separately. The officials agreed to pay our salaries before Tuesday. If they do, we will resume training. For now, we will wait and see,” said Odhiambo.

The suspended players are the evergreen Odhiambo, Dennis Ng’ang’a, Boniface Omondi, Alpha Onyango, Sydney Ochieng’ Ernest Wendo, Benson Omalla, John Ochieng, and Austin Odhiambo.

Gor is still serving a Fifa transfer ban for failing to pay salary arrears to their former players. The ban ends in January.

Gor will launch their title campaign in the new season against Ulinzi next month at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Suspension Lifted
Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinistry has revealed that the 10 players who were suspended by the club due to gross misconduct have resumed training after being forgiven by the management.

The Irish man told Nation Sport that his focus is now on improving the standards of football in the team and winning more silverware during his stint with the 19-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions.

“The suspended players are all back in the team,” said McKinistry.

The K’Ogalo management suspended the players on August 4 after they went on strike lamenting on being paid half of their salaries in July.

Among the players who were punished are forward George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo, Dennis Ng’ang’a, Boniface Omondi, Alpha Onyango, Sydney Ochieng’ Ernest Wendo, Benson Omalla, John Ochieng and Austin Odhiambo.

They were given seven days to show cause for their action. However, the 37- year-old tactician didn’t elaborate on the process which led to the players being readmitted to the team.

On the transfer embargo put on the club by Fifa, the tactician said he is ready to use available players until January when he will assess gaps after the new season kicks off, then reinforce the squad once the ban is lifted.

“As a head coach, the three key areas where I can have a big impact is on recruitment strategy, improvement of existing players and setting high standards. Obviously the ability to launch our transfer strategy is something that we have to be patient with until January,” added McKinistry, who was appointed on July 29.

He revealed that there is a massive talent which has been displayed by the youth team players and plans to promote some of them to the senior team.

“The young players have competed well thus far. As such, some will stay with the first team, whilst others will return to the youth group and continue to be monitored with a view to giving them more opportunities so as to prove themselves in the future,” he asserted.

K’Ogalo have been going on with their preseason training sessions at Camp Toyoyo grounds with just three weeks before the new FKF-PL season kicks off on September 10.

The club on July 12 nailed a three-year Sh229.5 million sponsorship with betting firm Betafriq.
