Gor Mahia sink against City Stars 2-0

Report from Mozzartbet
Nairobi City Stars got their early New Year's gift on Thursday afternoon as they stunned record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia 0-2 in a league match played at Nyayo National Stadium to record their first win over the side in ten years.

Since April 2011, the Nicholas Muyoti currently coached side had never managed a league win over the 19-time Kenyan champions who had dominated head to head meetings between the two sides.

However, in the midweek match played on Thursday afternoon, strikes from Ezekiel Odera and Anthony 'Muki' Kimani on either half were enough to turn the tides as Gor remained without a win in their last three league meetings where they have managed only one point.

The game got off to a somber mood as both sides paid their respects to referee Nicholas Omondi who passed on during the week while receiving treatment from injuries sustained in a fatal road accident while en route to Nairobi to officiate the tie between Gor Mahia and Bandari, where he served as the reserve referee.

After a cagey opening ten minutes, City Stars had the first glimpse on goal when a clever pass by Sven Yidah opened some space for Davis Agesa on the left flank. The winger tried to find someone in the area but his cross cum shot almost ended up in the back of the net save for Gad Mathews who made a fingertip save to turn it out for a corner.

On the stroke of the half hour mark, Ezekiel Odera almost wheeled off in celebration but his well struck effort agonizingly just cannoned off the post as it rolled back harmlessly into play where it was comfortably dealt with to keep the deadlock intact.

Just eight minutes later, there would be no denying Odera at a second time of asking as he coolly slotted his effort past the goalkeeper to give his side a slender lead halfway through the match.

In the second half, experienced Anthony ‘Muki’ Kimani rose from the bench to repay the manager’s faith in him as he doubled City Stars lead just five minutes after replacing Agesa.

On the 71st minute, the former Bandari man struck a free kick awarded to his side directly into the back of the net to give his team plenty of breathing room. That moment of magic proved to be the cherry on top of the cake moment as the game ended 0-2 in favour of City Stars who moved upto third as Gor look disillusioned in 7th.
