Story from Citizen Sports
Gor Mahia moved a step closer to the Kenyan Premier League title after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kakamega Homeboyz at Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

The record champions needed a dramatic late moment to secure all three points, with Homeboyz defender Peter Thiong’o scoring an unfortunate own goal in the dying minutes of the match.

Gor Mahia went into the game full of confidence following the Mashemeji Derby victory over AFC Leopards, and they showed early intent in a fast-paced opening.

However, Kakamega Homeboyz also started strongly, creating chances through Derrick Otanga and Peter Thiong’o, but they failed to find the target.

Both teams played attacking football in the first half, with chances at both ends. Gor Mahia’s Shariff Musa and Lawrence Juma came close, while Homeboyz captain Moses Mudavadi nearly scored with a powerful header that hit the woodwork. Despite the pressure, neither side managed to break the deadlock before halftime.

The second half remained tight, with fewer clear chances as both teams fought hard in midfield. Gor Mahia made changes to strengthen their attack, introducing fresh legs to push for a winner.

Just when the match looked headed for a draw, Gor Mahia struck. Ben Stanley made a strong run down the left and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Under pressure, Thiong’o accidentally turned the ball into his own net, handing Gor Mahia a late lead.

The goal silenced the home crowd and sealed a vital win for the visitors.

The victory sees Gor Mahia extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points, strengthening their push for a record 22nd league title. For Kakamega Homeboyz, the defeat is a setback in their chase for a top-three finish as the season heads into its final stages.
