Gor Mahia down AS Maniema 2-1

Lawrence Juma in action against Maniema

Gor Mahias campaign in the 2019 CECAFA Club cup started on a solid note on Monday evening when they downed AS Maniema of DR Congo 2 -1.

Maniema finished 4th in the 2018-2019 DR Congo League Super League with 57 points, well behind champions TP Mazembe who finished with 83 points.

The match was played in Rubavu which is a short distance from the home area of Maniema. As a result, a large crowd attended the match to support the Congolese side.

Additional reporting from the Nation

After a goalless opening quarter, Ochieng dispossessed the giant Abedi Masudi at the centre of the park in the 22nd minute. He then dribbled forward, weighed his options and fired a thunder bolt that flew past the despairing dive of keeper Bukasa Mangala.

Kenneth Muguna and Samuel Onyango lost clear chances to extend Gor’s lead, but Boniface Omondi made no mistake after the break.

He easily beat the offside trap, then produced a cheeky dummy that left Mangala lying on the turf, before slotting the ball into an empty net for K’Ogalo’s second.

In Oktay’s first competitive match of the season, new signing Tobias Otieno impressed in midfield with his tackling and range of passing skills.

Oktay also summoned other new signings Dennis Oalo and Ambundo Dickson as second half substitutes.

That’s before Likweya Jeremaya scored a consolation for Maniema from the penalty spot in the dying moments of the game.

  1. Gor Mahia-2 As Maniema-1

    Gor Mahia scorers
    -Wellington Ochieng 22nd minute
    -Boniface Omondi 50th minute

  2. Kudos team. Good to start the season on a winning way.
Kasumba and Waruru have left Sofapaka and are now free agents

  3. We would be tempted by the possible capture of Umaru Kasumba. He is the best alternative we have of the players who were plying their trade in the KPL 2018/19 season. I fear that the cartels will drive a hard bargain and inflate the sign on fee to rediculous proportion with intention of gaining from the same. Shame on these sharks who keep on driving away talented players because of their selfish demand and greed.

  4. Congrats to the boys. One game at a time.
Where are the regular commentators here? I am suprised only 4 posts since yesterday. Had we lost I am sure we would be reading over 40 posts now. Aol gi mashabik ma Gor.

    1. @Albert Kosero, we are waiting to fail so that we can bring on our expertise. As of now the team is winning so let us keep our arsenals for later. Will be an interesting season this one. Wazito will spice it up.I hope SONY and Ksm Allstars will add to the spice, not forgetting ingwe under our former player

  5. we will win KPL with five games to go. All our missiles should be traded on CAFCL. All teams in the KPL are rebuilding and none of them have a coach with tactical intelligence than Oktay. On Wazito’s team, apart from Teddy Osok, Joe Waithira and Derek Otanga (all inexperienced), none of them can lace Mustafa’s shoes.
    Let’s reflect:
Kevin Omondi- inconsistent, lost his place in Sony team to Samwel Njue towards the end of the season.
Lloyd Wahome- Way past his best and Tusker reject
Bixente Lizarazu- u17 keeper. wont be bothered
Gad Mathews- Third choice keeper at K.Sharks
    Cercidy Okeyo- Gor Mahia reject
Their coach Fred Ambani- had to wait upto the last day of NSL to be assured of promotion despite have more experience and resources than all the teams in that league
Am only concerned of Bandari but they will tire given the distances they will need to cove compared to others, lack of squad depth and continental engagements

    1. Yea, Wazito will be a top five team going by their signings
Gor needs a center forward/target man preferably an import of good repute who can score at least 15 goals a season.
I am disappointed Bandari are not making any significant moves on the transfer market given they will be playing in the continent, their squad need an additional 2-3 quality players in order to make a mark in the continent and challenge for the kpl
Sofapaka have lost players and dont look too bothered, they will suffer

  6. face of Gor has change. AR leaving. Teams being beaten. Fans a quite. looking forward to a good season

  7. Team is not build by buying big names of which some are rejects from other teams. Apart from the big Bus that Wazito have acquired, I do not see anything worth worrying Kogallo. They have the best bus in KPL however they are not our “is equal”. I can bet, Wazito will finish towards 10th position. Coach Ambani will be fired before the 10th match of the season. Watch this space.

  8. Let us not worry about big names. Before joining Gor Mahia how many people knew Michael Olunga? What about Peter Dawo etc etc the list is endless.

  9. Very happy with the recruitment of local boys. The chair has learnt what many fans and funs are yet to learn about our local league.

The league pays little money after an expensive marathon and that is the reason Wazito will go nowhere unless they are here for other reasons other than soccer. Why would they buy a 12 million bus, spend millions on players, spend millions on about 40 games in a season only to earn 4.5 million winners prize?

I have concluded that our soccer is a money laundering avenue and that’s why most clubs make 1 step forward and 2 backwards. The costs of running a team a whole season doesn’t add up considering that only Kogalo has made some money in CAF championships. Mt. Kenya was the latest team to learn that this league doesn’t pay after the ‘tanga tanga’ boss lost in politics.

For now i will wait and see but clearly the league managers have to pay better for us to talk of a real league.

  10. Am following and out of the new signings fielded: Ambundo, Oalo(came as a sub) are very average. Elvis Ronack at the back is showing promise. One thing the coming season will prove is that this Ambundo guy is a big fraud just like Mustapha. He has touched the ball less than 5 times the whole first half. He may have scored quite regularly for Alliance FC but he will never be an upgrade on BlackBerry who i have heard we are releasing. And to think he has been handed the No 9 jersey is just a travesty. Could we not find a better winger locally? I thought what made our foreign signings different and better from those signed by other KPL teams was that they were to be playing for their national teams. That seams to have changed. And there is this noise about buying young unknown players being a good thing. Those peddling that hogwash please tell me:
    1. Gor has won the local league about 5 times in the last 6 seasons. In those instances, out of the first 11 how many were young and unknown?
    2. From the top European leaugues, EPL, Bundesliga,La Liga, Serie A, when was the last time they were won by a team boasting youth and unknown? Can’t remember. Those leagues plus the KPL has been won bt teams boasting experienced and established players. This hogwash about youth is bullshit. And that guy who asked who knew Olunga before he joined Gor, the answer is anyone who was following the KPL already knew him from his stints at Thika Utd and Tusker.

    1. Buda Boss, it is too early to start judging new signings. I remember what was said of Jausenge. 4 million problem, injury prone etc. He was given time and we saw what he delivered. Just relax. Let the boys play some games together before has comment start coming.

  11. Whats the latest scoreline from kigali? Meanwhile news just in is bernard ondiek is the last to be released ( 9 have gone so far ) and that umaru kasumba and humphrey mieno are on their way to kogallo.

The whereabouts of dennis oliech remain unknown.

    More to follow….

  12. Full time Gor 2 AS Port 0
    Boniface Omondi
    Dennis Oalo.
Dennis Oalo may come good eventually. His goal was a result of patience, determination and sheer belief.

  13. @Musymo, any comment on the score? Let’s give the boys time to gel. We are always busy criticizing yet the team are actually playing their first pre-season matches

    1. @Danico, was not criticizing. Was critiquing and I also think I may have been too quick to judge because I only based my assessment on the first half. Second half Dennis Oalo for example came to life.
