Gor Mahia go down to Tusker

courtesy of futaa.com

A 62nd minute goal from the spot by former SoNy Sugar forward Ismael Dunga was all that Tusker FC needed to beat league-leaders Gor Mahia FC in a highly-billed Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played at the City Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tusker could have opened the scores in the ninth minute, Khalid Aucho lobbed the ball to Ismael Dunga but the latter was ruled to be offside while in a good position to score. By the tenth minute, the Brewers enjoyed more possession; 57 % against Gor’s 43 %.

In the 17th minute, hardworking Tusker FC midfielder Fredrick Onyango fouled Dan Sserenkuma outside the box, Gor winning a freekick. Kevin Omondi shot straight at Tusker custodian Boniface Oluoch, wasting a precious chance.
The game was well settled down by the 25th minute but turned out to be more physical and by halftime the center referee had dished out three yellow cards, two to Gor’s Eric Okoth and Anjelo Okumo and one to Tusker’s Robert Omunuk.

Second Half

Both teams made changes soon after the restart; debutant Anjelo Okumu was replaced by Paul Kiongera while Joseph Pablo Njuguna took the place of old horse Eric Ochieng. Tusker brought in Joshua Oyoo for Ugandan Robert Omunuk.

Kevin Omondi wasted another glorious chance to give Gor the lead in the 50th minute, shooting straight into the arms of Oluoch after a good run on the left wing.

A Jerim Onyango clearance in the 62nd minute appeared to have touched Musa Mohammed on his left hand and the center referee awarded Tusker a penalty which Ismael Salim calmly slotted in.

Boniface Oluoch did well to deny Gor an equalizer in the 76th minute after a right-footed volley by diminutive Ugandan striker, Dan Sserenkuma.

Gor brought in Edwin Lavatsa for Innocent Mutiso in the 80th minute while Tusker made a defensive sub, pulling out KPL top scorer Jesse Were for Nigerian defender Jeffery Governer and it paid off as they (Tusker FC) managed to defend their lead until the end.

As we all know we are bound to lose some points on the way but what will determine if we make it will be our character and how we came back after this hiccups. As much aas I know we are still on track since even those trailing us will falter at one time or the other. In the second half we played with more hunger but as usual the composure in front of goal was still an issue. For the genuine fans I salute you even in defeat you saluted the team by offering your appreciation in form of clapping. THose are genuine fans but those who remained behind and prevented the ref and tusker players from leaving the field until late they should know that they are doing more damage to the gor brand than good. We can claim that the game ended peacefully with no incidents but it’s little things like these that mess our name with the current/potential sponsors and even with the KPL/FKF and the stadia management. In other words let’s not get tired of condemning hooliganism in whatever form it rears its ugly head

It is never easy, that was a difficult match. We are still at the top now and hopefully we’ll bounce back in the subsequent matches. I also think the EC should consider moving GM matches to either Nyayo or Kasarani City is too crowded.

Bobby n Bob, what are you testing? Do you know being number one is easy but maintaining it is not easy?

You made two big mistakes today,

How could you play Angelo Okumu who is still very raw in place of Lavatsa, Kiongera n Paul odhiambo. When I saw the line up I knew there was a mistake n it came out in the early stages of the game that he is still raw n could not perform. If he impressed against Shabana, that doesn’t mean he could do it against big boys like tusker.

Why on earth did u substitute Eric Ochieng? By so doing, u created another mistake.

Six points lead is very narrow and its very sad that we can afford to lose points due to very very poor fielding n equally poor substitution.
The earlier you wake up n stop the trial n error the better.

    I rest my case.

Line up selection was the biggest problem. Big mistake not to play joseph njuguna in midfield. . . . I think the two bobbies have learnt not to mess up with the lineup…………..16 points to go ! 16 points to go ! Sofapaka and Tusker are a real threat to the title. We cannot afford to slip up……

Gor lost due to poor fielding and it looked strange to me that the coaches could not notice this. I blame the two Bobbies and if they continue, they will have themselves to blame.

I think Gor lost because it was not our day. We cannot win all the matches, otherwise there would be no competition. I bet if those chances lost today turned into goals, all of us would be celebrating the great line up. We must allow the coaches to do their thing, they know the players more than we do.Congratulation to the team for working hard, that was not an easy game.

  • Dan Original

@Kalixtos thanks for the compliments. Had we won all of us on this Blog would be celebrating how the Bobys are great in bringing new talent in a tough match like Tusker. The truth is that all teams are still going to lose matches. Tusker and Ingwe are yet to go down to Mbaraki, Sofapaka is yet to play Ulinzi, Mathare and Wetern stima at Bukhungu etc. All we need to do is to get a max 16 points and even less if the top contenders lose points. By the way I have noticed that whenever the patron graces our matches then the results rarely favour us. It could be a coincidence but I have noticed that trend from my little research. Jerry also becomes jittery when we play the tension-packed matches.
All the same I still believe the league is our to lose. We just need to play like there it’s the last game. All in all the fighting spirit of our players is very good but for us as fans we are just too down. We only support when we are on top and go quiet when the team is on the receiving end. The Sofapaka drummers go about their business irrespective of the results or trends on the pitch. Could it be the reason their team is on the ascendancy?

  • Please, please, please, some of your remarks only helps to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of our players and the technical bench!! I kindly want to appeal to you to stop it forthwith. We need positive energy, self belief and personal drive from the players to help push us over the line. We can help build this in them. The players continues to show tht they are ready to dig deeper in every match and today was no exception. The defence, more so Mosoti and Owino showed the right attitude and the hunger to succeed and I hope the whole team will draw a lot from this exemplary performance. Don’t forget tht the vultures of negativity and the nay sayers have sharpened their swords, ready to cannibalise the team and her performance as from today. We must remain strong for the team and selflessly protect it from the expected barrage of attacks by the also called “FANS”. Yes, The same barbaric people who in the early mornings of Sunday descended on Tusker Team Manager- Waliaula with all sorts of weapons and beat up the innocent and defenceless man !!! My Question “-Who are you to decide when to be peaceful and when to randomly attack other innocent, peace loving football lovers in our stadiums”?? You do this all in the name of venting your anger because their team has beaten the team you support?? Kwani you think you’re the only one who supports Gor Mahia and so bears the greatest pain of losing alone!! NI uchungu kwa kila mtu but we choose to ACT differently because we are decent people. We use our heads not to suspend our ears and eyes but to draw from the content of our brains. Please do the same for its for your own good. Whether you sit at the terraces or the Centre Stand, you’re still a hooligan and you belong to the days past, NOT in our Stadiums. Back to matters football- The FACT IS “WE STILL REMAIN IN AN ENVIABLE POSITION” If you were talking about the fielding interfering wth our general play ie our strength, focus, fluidity, transition, application and conversion then I would agree. But to blame it for the loss is absurd and unacceptable. Nobody with a half decent football knowledge should say tht BW and JBO have become complacent when it really calls for thorough professionalism. That fielding was done in the best interest of the team, taking into account how the players have applied and expressed themselves during the trainings. How does the fielding cause Jerry to punch the ball into Musa and onto his hand? How does it contribute to the referee choosing to award the penalty!! This is because we have Seen referees wave away such incidents As” ball to hand” in the past. Its a case of being unfortunate with the referee’s decision on this occasion. Musa tried his best to remove his hand from the Ball’s way but failed. The ball just brushed against his arm and the referee interpreted it to be a Handball instead of ball to hand. Fellow followers of Gor Mahia, There is no shame in losing to a single goal scored from a soft penalty decision. The coach- BW has rightly put it “neither team deserved to win this match” We still match on. We shall overcome if we keep the faith. Don’t worry because as they say – match turning decisions always even out in the span of the season. We have suffered at FATE’S hand today but you can be sure the other teams’ will also get their fair share on the appointed date. Does the cases of Arsenal-Aston Villa -(1-3) and Sunderland-Arsenal-(1-3) ring some bells in your mind!!

Its difficult 2 say this (but after following GM 4 some time & seeing GM lift the Mandela Cup) its obvious that 80% of the current team & that of the last 4 years, r just AVERAGE FOOTBALLERS.
COACHES CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH AS PLAYERS DONT HAVE THE SKILLS.
ITS DUE 2 (lack of) ABILITY THAT GM PLAYS AS IF ITS SUPPORT BASE IS A MERE 50FANS.
No one two passes, running into space, ball control below average 4 midfield & fowards hence poor possession!
Why the aerial balls Dan “Flava” againt 6ft Shiko?

@Le Pastre well said. We have to change our thinking (though this applies to a small clique) and accept defeats honourably. We actually played superbly but luck was not on our side. I’m sure we will still make it let’s have the faith.
We should not blame the coach(es) without knowing why they make certain decisions. To me the new kid has the potential but we didn’t use his strength of speed but instead hacked to him aerial balls which he had first to control only to be out-muscled.
To our fans why do we heap praises after one win and bitter critiscm after just one loss. A loss thro’ a penalty and several missed chances should show us that the team is actually good. Why else would the Tusker goalie be the MVP?

A small section of Gor’s fans attacked Tusker fans n some were seriously injured, n so hooliganism MUST be condemd

@wabz: as much as i too condemn hooliganism, the so called ‘tusker fans’ were asking for trouble from the word go. tuskers shud stop this issue of hiring fans to provoke gor fans. they shud have looked for some secluded corner to ‘earn their pay’. how they were celebrating the goal and cheering, one kud clearly see that it was only a matter of time before the tempers flared. as much as one is allowed to cheer what those ‘tusker fans’ were doing bound to cause fracas.
    2. it’s disppointing that gor went in for a draw and lost the game. gor shud stop focussing on the league and take one match at a time. the potential is there but imaturity in some players persists. gor feared tusker. william shud stop telling us that no team diserved to win. just what is he expecting in africa champions league. gor can lose a match, that is ok, but getting into a pitch to draw is not ok. they shud have gone for 3 points. if this is how williams wants to win the league then i really fear for what will happen in the africa arena.

The boys gave in their best. It was just a bad day in office. I honestly did not see any thing wrong with the line-up. Our coaches are professional and will only field players based on how they respond to training. Angelo had impressed and even played very well against Shabana. It was only right to give him a second chance. I still believe he is a very good player. The substitutions were spot on. Eric Ochieng was totally off colour yesterday and he was a potential candidate for a red card having been yellow carded already. That is the reason I believe he was benched. Why would someone want to blame Jerim Ja goal. I honestly did not see any mistakes he committed apart from failure to stop the penalty kick. About, Patron, I agree, Kogallo rarely wins when he is in attendance. I said as much when I saw him being introduced to players yesterday. I have observed that as well. Please do not lynch some of us for merely expressing our observations.

Thanks @Kosero for coming to my rescue on the coincidence of the Patron and our performance. It was just an innocent observationfrom someone who has been regularly attending Gor matches. If you attend our local matches you will notice some things like Mathare being Gor’s bogey team as well as Ingwe vs Chemelil. It doesn’t make any of these teams inferior but some things just happen. But all the same we have also won some great games despite these coincidences. All we need is to put in that extra effort, stop antagonising the TB and we will soon be home and dry. Mind you for every game we win the trailing team finds the climb to be getting steeper and steeper and they will soon find themselves fighting for the second place. We start our come back with Thika on Sato and I believe and hope we will win that.
On ticketing our EC has not yet improved as much as I thought. While the tickets were of very high quality why do we have to struggle to buy them? Some fans gave up and I was disappointed to see them buying tickets from the stewards (where the stewards got these tickets only them can tell us) or bribing their way through. This really confirmed to me that Gor is a cash cow for those manning the gate. It was such a painfull thing to think how the club has a fine of 2.75m (2m SSMB, 0.5m KPL, 0.25m TPL (Against Ingwe) (Rama’s celebration against Ingwe) to pay yet the leakages have not been sealed

B.W’s approach is best.Any player who performs is automically given another try. If twas a “fluke” they’re rested. This encourages competition & am sure with proper signings GM’s standards will back 2 the high levels deserving of the fan base.
Now lets avoid cockamamy reasoning e.g
    1. That RAO presence in the stadium has any effect on GM’s performance. That’s equivalent 2 saying that GM should not have ladies as officials/fans.
2.”GM security” attacking Tusker TM & preventing NPL game etc.

@ODUOR12, there is absolutely no problem with sharing with our esteemed bloggers a harmless observation. It is just an interesting coincidence, nothing else. Read NOT too much from Dan Original’s and my observations. If you can remember in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Gor used to have some green shorts and white jerseys’ with 2 stripes on the left. The manufactures was admiral. Gor could never win a match while donning that uniform. It was a very interesting coincidence. Please consider these as pure observation. No one is blaming RAO or anything.

In the run-up to this game there was alot of tough talk about security and all…but what did we see?people literally fighting to buy the tickets, then fighting again to enter the stadium, then fighting again to preserve our seats from the fans who jumped over the fence into the center stand, then the said robbers who wanted to steal the collection.then a section of fans throwing objects into the pitch, then a section of fans attacking Tusker fans, then a section of fans holding the officials and Tusker players hostage in the stadium after the game…..IS ALL THIS SECURITY REALLY??????

Well, it, indeed was a tough game. I didn’t watch nor want to know the results until today. I am a Gor fan and such tense matches leave me in the jitters. All matches are tense whenever Gor plays.

When playing Shabana, I saw the great performance of Gor and I’m sure they maintained this against Tusker. There was only one goal scored, it could have gone either way. What we need in Kenya is more goals, mostly for our side.

As for RAO attending the game, He should be commended. If I couldn’t even listen to the radio broadcasts, where does he find the guts to attend the game? He is very strong and we should admire the hero he is.

Lets all hope the title comes our way and hope we outperform previous Kenyan representatives to regional and CAF cups.

I am a Man U fan and we lose the tensest of the matches too. Its painful but I can watch. Gor’s are tenser, though. Wishing us the best season this time.

@Kosero ! Eehh What an observation and we should also accept that we are playing in competitive league whereby there is no gaurantee that GOR wil be the champs although they have the best chance. For those who can not take the reality as fact, please prepare for more surprises. The comments above confirms that GOR players and TB are yet to mature as number one contenders. We have been struggling to win and there is no team that we can claim that we dominated and won confidently. SOFAPAKA looks favorite as of now.

    1. GOR will not beat THIKA, SOFAPAKA, MATHARE , CHEMELIL and ULINZI,

How I wish “GM security” could also play its historic role of “keeping away evil spirits” but without violence & disruptions of lower tier leagues.
The issue of not wearing ties to GM matches was/is another interesting tradition as well as the colourful songs & taunts, which is why i find it strange that GM was fined coz of Rama’s celebration.
Also printing tickets abroad is simply splitting hairs coz the problem is with the gate attendents/security.

@The Villager our two BOBBY’S are yet to read from the same script and come up with a modeled match winning strategy depending on the kind of opponents we are facing. The frustration posted by most bloggers with respect to yesterday’s performance is due clueless and careless approach by non other than the head coach.

As much as I respect the work of TB, but am sure all teams that we are yet to play have the strategy to beat us. And it started during the derby with AFC. Our defense is unbearable with fast balls and we are poor at covering up in the flanks. If the TB does not see this loopholes and seal them , Inclusive of tweaking the line up, then expect the worse in advance. GOR line up now needs fighters and guys angry to win the title for the team. I
mean how do you bench Lavatsa, Kiongera,,Dube while facing a physical and experienced side like TUSKER. That was the biggest goof by the head coach and I wonder if JBO who worked with MATANO at SOFAPAKA failed to guide the TB. Hayo NI maoni yangu …!

Yesterday they were great, today they are jokers and tomorrow they will be praised like heroes as long as result are good. WHY DON’T YOU GO A.W.O.L and resume later. Even a lay man on the streets knows that our football and league is ranked below position 130 worldwide and so is our players in this country.

We are leaving in the modern world where information be it digital, visual, printed or audio is available and it is a shame to compare oranges and tomatoes. Give “Ceasar” what belongs to “Ceasar” and GOR what belongs to GOR. If you want to compare EUROPE standards and GOR then you are inclined to be frustrated and confused as some here above.

IF YOU CAN NOT STOMACH THE PRESSURE OF MISSING OUT ON THE TITLE THEN TAKE OFF, BECAUSE IT IS STILL A POSSIBILITY AND JUST FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT SO AND SO PASSED ON BECAUSE WE FAILED TO WIN THE TROPHY.

Truth be said GM fans are some of the most unpredictable. We lose a single game and it’s like the sky has come down falling. The truth is that the lose to Tusker could be a blessing in disguise. Let’s not look for excuses even where there are none. We played a great game pinned Tusker to their side unlike the first leg where Omunuk ran rings round us. It happens in football that you play well and lose. In case we are not carefull the tension from the fans might rub on the players and TB with catastrophic results. I like the way the Bobbys carry themselves, very maturely even in defeat and that’s what we fans should do. Remember that if us who are priviledged to blog behave in an orthodox manner the unfortunate ones in our midst will resort to other means.
On security I was pained to struggle to get a ticket then struggle to get in only to realise that even stewards at the gate had their own tickets for sale. From where I cannot tell. We need God’s blessing to overcome all these.

From experience the league is won by beating the ‘lesser’ teams and managing draws or minimal loses to the top teams. Last year we beat all the big teams but lost to the smaller teams and were second. IN EPL ManU last year was beaten senselessly by the Liverpools, Chealsea and ManCity but beat the stokes, Hull etc and who won the league? We might not have won the last five games but we only lost one match. I hope we can now only go up. I don’t see what the panic is for

One of our major problems is to rejoice when we win one match and forget that the league is a marathon. From what has been happening every team has had a bad patch at one time or another. I hope ours is no more. For those who are pessimistic you will be the ones celebrating even louder once we take the cup on 9th November. It’s goona be tough and not for the feint hearted.
