Gor Mahia name squad to Sportpesa cup

Kahata, Wendo, Odhoji

With head coach Ze Maria on holiday, Assistant coach Zedekiah Otieno will be in charge of the Gor Mahia squad that will participate in the inaugural Sportpesa Super cup. The tournament is an opportunity for Zico to reprise his skills as a head coach.

It is also an opportunity for players who have not seen much playing time to finally prove their worth. New signings who showed promise like Shaban Odhoji, Teddy Osok, Makbul Karim, Jeconiah Oyuga, John Ndirangu and Oliver Maloba will use this as an opportunity to showcase their skills.

The last time Gor Mahia played in a regional tournament in Tanzania was in 2015 when they lost in the final of the CECAFA club cup to Azam. They will be looking to make amends. Their campaign starts against Jangombe FC of Zanzibar.

Nine time English champions, Everton, will be traveling to Dar es Salaam to play the winners of the eight team tournament.

“We are breaking new ground and we have no doubt we’ll be making new friends and adding to our growing international fan base when we visit in July.
“I know Ronald Koeman and the players are really looking forward for a good match against one of East Africa’s best team,” Robert Elstone, the Everton CEO and Director said at the Tanzanian capital.

  • Good squad capable of doing well with the right approach as required depending on individual opponents.Tournaments unlike league games must be approached very tactically in order to progress to the knock-out phases at which point you play for everything. My concern though is why Philemon Otieno is missing from the traveling list. He should be the preferred defensive midfielder in the absence of Wendo but Teddy Osok can also put in a decent show. Please Kahata extend your contract before departure or you want to go put in a masterclass display over there so that Simba, Yanga or big spending newbies Singida United snaps you up###

  • Should Zico do well in this competition than he should be elevated to head coach. Am not a fan of coach Zico (but was an admirer of player Zico) but my reasoning is that after the SP Cup Zico will have a greater insight of what the players can do in training, league and cup situations. Ze Maria will still stick to his training and league assessments so nothing will change his mind. SEEING IS BELIEVING. ZE MARIA SHOULD HAVE GONE TO TANZANIA AND TAKEN HIS LEAVE LATER AFTER ALL ITS JUST FOR ABOUT ONE WEEK. HE CAN LEAVE THE TEAM UNDER ZICO AND THE OTHER ASSISTANT FOR THAT ONE WEEK. MUST ALL 3 (ZE MARIA,BRAZILIAN ASST. & “ONYANGO”) GO FOR LEAVE AT THE SAME TIME? Also it would be better for Ze Maria to personally actually assess the potential signings this time round. A

  • @oduor 12, there is no mid season signings. The squad is big enough to compete for the league title as you can see from the TZ bound team. Remember there is no GOTV cup and top 8 cup this year, so let everybody enjoy the moment including the TB.

Maria holiday is OK,bt the timing is poor if he was concerned abt his job,coz ironically GM is on the verge of going 2 seasons without a trophy ,if we go by last year record of inability to open or bridge the gap btwn tusker & us whenever there was the opportunity. I think the ideal situation would be GM holding 10 or more pts against our rivals. After posta game maria said he has 3wks to prepare the team not go on holiday

  • @Jakoyo, i won’t put my life on the line but i doubt if Mr. Soprano & team change can allow the failure of being unable to hold a cup/shield tournament. On lighter note why not have a coach for tournaments -Zico/Jodala and one for the league-Ze Maria/JoBrazil the same way we had goalkeepers for the league and GoTv just to massage egos.On more serious note quantity is not quality. We need a lean quality squad, we must improve some areas and even drop overrated underperforming players for better signings. The savings made by reducing the bloated senior team size can be channelled towards the youth team. A good youth player can also be upgrade to the senior team on merit or when there is an injury crisis. That’s why it beats me that EC can neglect the youth team.

My thought is that this competition is more about the players than for the coach. It is an opportunity for every player who has not been very activity due to the presence of the big guns to demonstrate what they are made of. This is going to be an International seen with a lot of pressure. May be for Zico it is also a chance to show case a bit of his Philosophy with a bit of Ze Maria’s which I think may not be very different. After all his nick name “Zico” suggests he has leaning towards Brazilian style of play. I also believe that the best way of learning is to be thrown into the deep end. It

  • Only 2 players among gor’s first eleven are traveling to Tz(Kagere & Wellington). The rest are the so called fringe players. AFC has all its first eleven there. Honestly we are going there to participate and not to compete for anything. Yanga and simba will not allow other teams to run away with 60million Tz shillings from their home.Anyway best wishes as this is a perfect opportunity for players to showcase their talents and possibly attract suitors from other clubs.

  • FkF meanwhile has released the Shield Tournament Draw dates and round of 64 set for Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th this month. So looks like we will having a domestic cup tournament after all which i believe is great news and good for Kenyan football as has been the case until GOtv pulled out.I believe with that development am justified to call for signing of a quality world class striker and sending of two midfielders on loan to get ample playtime.Jakoyo we need a super striker to wrap the league early and pull a shield enforcer performance…I am available to bring a striker of repute unmatched in the region if EC will avail the signing fees

  • And i fully support Kenneth Muguna…Harun Shakava and Timothy Otieno on their decision to forego Harambee Stars Machakos Training Camp and instead Opt to travel to Tanzania for the Super Cup….It is futile to stay back and once the Pro Foreign Legion jets in you are dropped from the traveling contingent which can only accommodate a certain number of players. They would then start regretting not going with the Mighty Mayienga to fight for a chance to face Everton FC and market themselves regionally at the same time…

  • I once rooted for UG coach Sam Timbe but is anyone taking note of coach Mike Mutebi of KCCA(UG) achievements. JaEntebbe & JaKampala any insights as to the reason behind this good performance, do UG clubs pay their TB & players better than GMFC? Do they have better sponsorships? Such a coach seems hungry for success and at K’Ogalo his knowledge of best talent in Ugandan & maybe East Africa may serve us well, more than our “siamese triplets” who must all go on leave and back report on duty together. Which coach would miss a chance to guide his team to a possible match against Everton, that was the game changer for any serious coach! You win the Super Cup and then beat Everton and even EPL(certainly Africa and entire footballing world) will take note of you & your team.

    • The other serious disconnect by our soccer administrators is thinking that Harambee Stars can qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations or even the World Cup while our clubs are, year in year out,a no show in CAF club tournaments and 99% of the foreign players feature in division 3 leagues Europe. Hehehe please forgive me guys, ama the “The Genius” prefers meeting Supaloaf, Butterfly and Simba Cement to Yanga, Simba TZ and Everton

  • Can somebody advise me because I may be thinking differently. …….Ngala said only one signing that that is left back…My advice was that we should bring a goal scorer since we have a problem with scorer…What about Gattuso?

  • First of all I would wish to thank Wanyonyi for admitting that he did amistake by leaving K’ogalo to AFC and that Mahia is the only club in Kenya with good structure and welfare of players at heart….However I will never agree with him when he says that he is longing to come back to K’ogalo. …..This should be a big lesson to other players who think that without them The mighty K’ogalo will not survive. ….

    • Wuod Suba which site had the KTN News to air SportPesa Super Cup?I really wish it to be true since that wa we can see our beloved team kanyagoree tanzania. On another note Nyangi baffles me for publicly castigating Muguna and Timothy for opting to play for us instead of being in Machakos waiting to be dropped immediately the foreign legion jets in. That is a show of true patriotism by the two players to GM which should be lauded like Ghost Mulee did not castigated…

Jasego Bernard Otieno is very solid behind there. Previously i had seen Gor Mahia players changing positions on advice from the TB and becoming very phenomenal. Bobby?Makamu? Virgo? Zico? Instead of recruiting another 1/2 back, why cant Bernard be given a chance to show case his strength in that line? Just wondering. We will eventually loose him.

        • Jamriambo some Gm things mako dhoga nono like someone from Kampala opined. Why buy another half-back like you said while we have two unused players who were purchased for that role namely Karim Maqbul from Jericho Allstars and Mike Simiyu from Muhoroni Youth?Instead of fortifying the striking deficiency Ngala wants a third fullback who will never make the 18 man squad just like the two above. Bernard Odhiambo is a skilled young man wasting away and i cant understand why he is not being groomed by being given few games in the famous rotation policy for i believe he can play in the same level with either Joash or Wellington

  • Just one decision won Brewkenge the league last year.At mid season things were more or less as they are this year but at the end of the season crucial goals from their mid season signing Allan Watende Wanga delivered the title to Brewkenge. GMFC’s forwards goal scoring has been below par since last year and that is the area that needs beefing up. As for Timonah, a K’Ogalo comeback is easy, let him do the talking on the field, mambo ya kusumbua “Mugabe” wetu na masimu hatutaki. We have and have had enough “passengers” in GMFC. Meanwhile Mike Mutebi’s KCCA of UG is currently 2nd in group A of CAF Confederation Cup, actually tieing on points with the leader. Our peers Zesco & St.Georges are also competing rather than merely participating. We are always made to believe that such feats are unattainable. Are they or we are just being brainwashed?
