Gor Mahia had a memorable season in 2015 in which they won the league unbeaten, won two other trophies a, reached the final of the CECAFA club  and the semi-finals of the GoTV shield. For that they were rewarded by being named the Kenya sports team of the year.

It marks the second time that a KPL team has won this award. Ulinzi stars won in 2010. Gor Mahia were nominated in 2013 and finished second to the Kenya Rugby sevens team.

Michael Olunga was  nominated for the sports person of the year award. But he did not make it into the top three. He was probably let down by the fact that despite his goal-scoring exploits, Harambee stars were dismal in 2015. Also this award is almost always dominated by the track and field athletes.
