Gor Mahia tech bench to learn from this experience

Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson has admitted that Esperance were several notches above Gor Mahia

“We have to accept that Esperance is a class above so many clubs in Africa, Gor Mahia included,” said the team coach Bobby Williamson.

“It has been an experience that tells us where we are and the gap we need to bridge before we can comfortably battle for honours in Africa. We were up against a side whose budget exceeds ours a  hundredfold and way ahead in terms of facilities,” added the Scott.

“We have learnt a lot over the two rounds and we will build on our weaknesses.” said Williamson to the Nation.

The gap in financing was evident in the fact that while Esperance camped in Europe, Gor Mahia mostly played local lower league teams.

Team manager Frank Ouna for his part has vowed to put the lessons learned from the Esperance match into practise. Ouna, said they will make a critical analysis of their experience in the continental championships and come up with proposals for the club management to consider in future when the club competes in Africa.

“There was evidently a huge difference between Esperance and Gor Mahia. The result in Tunis could have been bigger were it not for our goalkeeper,” Ouna said.

“We cannot blame the players, Esperance were tactically and physically superior than us. And the weather also favoured them,”

“We will go back to the drawing board. Our focus now is on the Kenyan Premier League and the GOtv Shield. We hope to bounce back stronger. But we must raise our standards to compete,” said Ouna to the Nation.

TP Mazembe eyeing Sserunkuma

Acording to a story posted on the Kawowo sports website, former African champions, TP Mazembe of DRC are reportedly set to swoop for Gor Mahia’s star Ugandan striker Dan Sserunkuma.

Representatives from the four-time African champions are said to have been in Zambia on Wednesday, where they watched Sserunkuma playing for the Uganda Cranes against Zambia.

No official bid has been tabled yet, but according to an unnamed source quoted on the official Kenyan Premier League website, the interest is certainly there.

“Sserunkuma could move as early as June. I think his camp has been notified (of the interest), but formal negotiations are yet to start with Gor,” the source was quoted as saying.

“Officials from Mazembe are using one or two Kenyans to try and push a deal. He is an accomplished forward, but at Mazembe he can play as a support strike.”

I watched the match on youtube from the Esperence link and what came out is that our players were making the usual mistakes we make locally. Ball control, posession and positioning was a major problem and we got punished for that. All in all the performance was not that bad as it taught us some lessons and we also realized that Juma as a keeper is as good as Jerry. That means we have an alternative between the sticks that we can depend on.The team also displayed some confidence during the match and did not resort to the ‘pata potea’ type of game.

On Danny leaving that could be a blessing in disguise as the team stands to benefit financially as well as Danny himself. As much as we will miss him (assuming he leaves) a guy must make hay while the sun shines. We should not be selfish and deny him a chance to improve his life while we change schools, jobs, cars , residences etc in order to improve our lives. Danny has been a good professional t the extend that even when he was ‘sabotaged’ by the EC he still came back and over-performed. All I can ask him is to give us all his best while still at GM.

  • Firstly, We are being too critical of gor Mahia, champions league is beyond our level for now, gor Mahia is still a top dog in East and central Africa, just wait or Cecafa kagame cup, we will make the other clubs look like amateurs.

Secondly, BW I don’t think there is much to learn from esperance game, simply beef up the central defence and bring on board a lethal striker and we are done! But for sure, please buy in central and southern Africa, there are real bargains in those leagues.

Thirdly, the technical bench must do a lot in terms of reading their opponents and deploying effective tactics. They should also be exposed to modern day training , perhaps a few weeks visit to training centers in Europe and South America and player exchange programmes with other clubs.

Lastly, sserenkuma is not going anywhere, kawowo sport is a Ugandan media and they are simply trying to hype the player, off course Ugandan, with a view to attracting mazembe to other big clubs.

@ Jakoyo, i feel safe TO hear that sserenkuma is not going anywhere, but still we dont need to wait till last minute. We should plan for a very good striker, infact not one but more. I also watched esparance vs gor through a tunisian sports tv and i noticed that almost everyone in that club is a striker which of course increses their chunces of scoring unlike GM where sserenkuma is the center of attraction..”no sserenkuma no hope” should be a thing of the past.AFC has done better by having both kelly n wanga, 2 giants, gor ni team kubwa in east africa n we should strech our search in central and south africa as stated by one blogger. Mano e pacha.

  • Its good that TB has noted the tactical gap & intends 2 address the problem. A bit of a dicey situation coz time will tell if its the players or the bench that needs revamping.
On CECAFA I state now 4 the record coz later on my passion 4 GM will as usual intoxicate my brain & cloud my reasoning capacity. After the Smeow & Esperance games GM may struggle even in TPL & definitely in the region. Scoring is still a major problem.
If Flava leaves in June it may be as a free agent & GM gets zero.

  • Lastly to me there is a lot individual talent in GM and TB has to exploit this in the field by winning matches & competitions. EC must make playing for GM as attractive as possible & that requires money, a lot of money. Hence theres no room for mismanagement/corruption of funds by EC. Hooligans must simply be arrested & prosecuted.
Otherwise there’ll be an exodus of talent from GM come June. EC work on the contracts now. Lets not look @ Esperance’s budget but the potential of our budget.

instead of crying out how other teams are technically and tactically better and how well endowed they are financially why dont we first put our house in order!!
On the pitch, the TB and the players should be accountable. They owe it to us as fans and stakeholders in the team.
The EC should also be held accountable by putting structures in place that will make it conducive for the players to perform and the fans to attend and sposors to come on board.
Once we have everything in place…all else will flow…and rightly so!!!

I know for sure GM has many versatile players that if moulded well can play fantastic foot ball. One example is Calabar. The boy is a defender but has scored crucial goals for both Gor and H/stars. That talent is there in him and some players av watched. We only need to exploit the talent and mould them. But this is extreamly difficult with the facilities we have. GM management should take this as a serious concern to be addressed.

  • The team is fine as per our standards.

We lost the game in the first leg with too many errors which forced the boys to play an open game in the return leg. Had we won in Nairobi, we would have played defensively in Tunis.

TB, Players and EC please learn from this and move forward with hope, hard work and courage.

  • The technical bench’s reaction to lessons learned in Tunis is commendable. It shows that they were very objective even as they went for the game. This is the sign of a good technical bench and team spirit. I would only suggest that they as they forward whatever lessons they picked in Tunis, they must not put into their mouth what they can not swallow. Esperance has been at it for a long time. Gor has been a power house before and that is a plus for us to build on. That will never be erased from the Continental archives. Thank you for acknowledging the team’s combined play. Am sure this will build them up. Congratulation for the fight.

  • symptons of a lousy coach if you ask me. so what if esperance camped in new york or hollywood. and so what if their budget was tens times that of gor. so when england fails to win the world cup is it because they did not put enough money?
so does it mean that we could have beaten any other team with a lesser budget?
pls mr Bobby we’ve heard such lame excuses before. this was about technic, nothing more. sure money plays a role but it should not be used to cover your hopelesness. the amounts gor is operating on is enough to up it’s technical approach in soccer.
the reason Uganda let you go was of one reason, you were able to take east and central, but when it came to africa you were bankcrupt. that is the reason you had to go. gor taking you up shud not be used to cover such excuses. even if we camped in europe with tunisia and played the same type of soccer, could we have won?
did the wether favour them in nairobi too? once Rwanda beat Kenya in their stadium and the kenya team claimed that they lost coz they were playing in mud! so was rwanda playing on a dried pitch. excuses come in all sizes and colours to suit all losers.
Bobby just up ur technical aspect of the game, what ur using might win you the kpl league but as we have witnessed, NOT AFRICA.

  • @dinga you are harsh on the coach, having been a coach in the past I think what he means is that in football finances dictates everything. You have money, you get the best players who in return give you the best because they are the best paid. Best paid players also ooze confidence and this may also intimidate a small or lets say a budget club. do you think real madrid will ever want to play esperance, no matter how good they are in africa ? You also get to train in some of the best pitches, exposed to the best technical bench, best training facilities e.t.c….this is what makes a team technically and physically superior over others.

Do you honestly believe gor Mahia can beat tp mazembe , Orlando pirates or even zamalek with the current level of investment in the club?

HELL NO! It will never happen but we fans have th chance o reverse the trend by investing in our club and making it one of the best in Africa. With the right leadership, one day our time will come, hopefully in my generation.

  • )@ Tom Ochieng #13 above… KPL is not competitive enough to offer necessary and enough techniques to a club like GM. Recall in 1987 Jack Johnson had to take the side for technical maturity for two months to Denmark? Staying and confining GM to Kenya is no development, After qualifying for a continental cup we should ship the team to the west to mature as JJ did in 87.That is what should have happened last year in DEcember
I repeat again, to do what was done in 87 get kogallo to camp in the west. lets lear from the past.

  • If the team is taken overseas will it be under a different head coach/TB?
What new ideas will the coach impart that he can’t do during the DAILY TRAINING SESSIONS.
We now have internet & more advanced technology than in ’87 that should enable us study our opponents thoroughly & more cost effectively.
We’ve very good gyms in the country. A trip overseas is purely 4 motivational & team building purposes. IT IS USUALLY DONE PRE-SEASON BUT ELECTIONS WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN TEAM/PLAYERS

Those who know will tell you that the more you open the game the more you are susceptible, and that’s what happened. On getting the best facilities Why do we have the best teams in Nairobi and not Wajir. Why does Nigeria, Morocco etc train in Europe and why do we take our best to Harvard, Oxford etc?

Ooh Laa la aaa..!! ” @Dinga You are SPOT ON, Call a spade a Spade… PERIOD.!! “.

Bobby Williamson must wake up to the reality that this year he will have no escape route or cunning excuses on mediocre performance by the team. The back stops with HIM. With his kind of technical ability and mental approach to the opposition irrespective of whether you take the team to the best , well polished and properly drilled facility anywhere in the world for Pre -season then GOR was still going to slip due to financial muscle.NONSENSE…BW.

He was hired to offer solutions and I expect YOU to dwell on just THAT. Please BW spare us those “Pseudo-colonialism” mentality and be informed that the same GOR MAHIA F.C attained the club championship under the tutelage of player- coach Allan “Ogango wuon
Pap” Thigo, without visiting DENMAK prior to winning Mandela cup, with some very scant resources.

You were beaten in Nairobi because of fielding an injured goalkeeper and failing to utilize
the available depth of skills and experience appropriately. Was that to do with resources or technical ability of the bench on ,team cohesion, self belief, mental stability ,team work etc..

Two days to 1 ST leg in Nairobi, two of your players exchanged blows on the training ground in your presence and as usual you did nothing to reprimand them. Players had to scuffle and separate them, You just lost control in the playing unit as a fatherly figure and no wonder JERRY fielded himself with an injury despite the medics precaution prior.

Stop taking us for a ride and do you work Mr. Coach. We all know that your approach and lack of intelligence for that matter contributed to ultimate poor-game plan, lack of playing chemistry that is slowly fiddling out and the earlier you wake up to this reality the better for both parties( You and Us) , otherwise I feel sorry for you and NANDWA ..
You two guys will be operating on very thin survival line in 2014……,NI HAYO TU..,!!!

I wonder what some fans want. No wonder we make one step forward and two backward. As a club we will take years to reach where the other clubs are because of the type of fans we have. Even Mourinho who is a grade 1 coach would struggle with a team like Gor against Esperance or TP Mazembe. Some of us think that so long as we are Gor even other team will crumble when we meet them. How wrong can we be. Our current TB is doing the best to get the best out of the boys.
Let’s pratice patience just the way we are imploring the team and TB to ALWAYS win.
@OGANGO TRAILER, please give us the name of that good coach so that we can know who the available coaches are after you will have caused the coach to leave. I would recommend some of the fans/bloggers who still have energy to try and play some soccer. There are matches organised by fans for EPL teams here in Kenya. I have met some previously vocal fans who after playing in these matches have changed their attitude towards coaches and players after realizing that the dynamics of soccer cannnot be explained at times.
From our desks we are very good analysts but the reality is very different.
We have more crucial things to handle this year like Sponsorship, and retaining our trophy so we need to calm down, support the team like there is no t=other team but criticze constructively. It’s easier to point out mistakes than provide alternatives.

  • If we can raise 150 million from members i would suggest to use it initially to build a permanent base with good training grounds and players apartments. This is to ensure first and foremost that any Gor mahia player including the youth and TB are always comfortable and that they stay focused. I.e they read, eat and drink football 24/7. The 2nd thing is to ensure a corruption free professional revenue-collection and marketing unit.
The rest can follow but without these basic items, how can one expect the club to grow? How does one go to work everyday without a house, sounds illogical doesnt it?

The beauty with Gor unlike our noisy neighbours next door is that we dont engage in sideshows of sacking coaches coz of losing. We must accept Esperance were technically superior than our team and i said its a wakeup call to all to work hard. Players must learn to work had individually and collectively by improving their skill.

Wow! interesting to know that some of the esperance players are earning more than Boby William and again most of them have been inthat club for more than 6yrs. By knowing this, i cannot under rate GM, Podwanchien. North Africans are paying well, look at Lavatsa’s salay, almost 4 times wat he was earning in Gor!!

    Reply
  • papamiky

wow, Lavatsa can pay 20 players in Gor still pay the coach and remain with 200,000.

we will put it as it is without fear, the TB needs character and enough depth for you who understand what I mean.
We defeated esperance back then even when our players were on meager pay save for handouts, Esperance had the same big Budget. My friends Its all about the two characteristics I have aforesaid.

  • The truth. Gor Mahia is still a small club, a paper tiger, an academy for bigger clubs to get players. Gor must style up to win titles. I can bet that even winning CECAFA will be very hard. Very minimal chances.

  • To compete with ESPERANCE, Gor MUST, have an academy, a stadium, a hostel, a gym, and every private facilities for training. There must be no corruption unlike what we see every week. There must be STRATEGIC PLANNING for many years. Soccer is played both on and off the pitch. The EC as usual is ever talking big and not implementing.

  • Those days of 1987 when soccer was played by passion alone are long gone and are never ever coming back. Nowardays soccer is even taught in class to little children in academies for early development, of which Gor Mahia does not have one. No investment in club lets shut up and accept that we only good for Kenya. If we dont have money we cannot compete. Those players we adore will go as soon as the TP Mazembes, Orlandos.come knocking. We must have a kitty that can support the club and also a return to us. We procastinate alot then vent our anger on couches etc. The time is now. Where do I take my 1, 000 monthly. • I think we should shop for a better Coach. Gor has the best players in East Africa. Bitam was a very tough team and we beat them. Bitam was even tougher than Esperence I think in future, we should be carrying our own food and cook like before. Esperence came to Nairobi with huge team including kitchen staff but Gor went to enjoy the services of five star hotel in Tunisia.Esperence did not take chances because every knows Gor is a very tough team and Esperence trained well for us. I think we should plan for several friendly matches. Let us start with the best teams in the EAC,South Africa,West Africa league then finally with teams from North Africa. This should be done in during the Mid season transfer window and end of KPL season
