Gor Mahia to face El Merreikh

According a report from Supersport , Gor Mahia are set to play Sudanese giants El Merreikh in a friendly matchon January 29 and the Nyayo national stadium. The match is designed to prepare Gor Mahia not just for the local KPL season but also for the CAF cup encounter against Ferroviario of Mozambique.

The two teams have faced each other a number of times in the past few years. Most memorable was 0-5 drubbing that El Merreikh handed to a youthful Gor Mahia side in 2008. In 2010 the teams met again and Merreikh won 3-1. On both occasions Kogalo were outclassed and outplayed by a Merreikh side that is highly professional, well funded by a Saudi Oil Sheikh and even owns their own stadium.

Kitawi and co were outfoxed on this occasion in 2008

Historically however, Gor Mahia has always had the upper hand over Merreikh. The teams met often in the CECAFA club cup. Most notable was 1985 when Merreikh were the hosts. The match was played in Wad Medani. But a determined Kogalo side without 6 suspended players won 2-1 to reach the final of that cup which they won after beating arch rivals AFC 2-0.

Arrangements for the match against El Mereikh, who are already in the country, are complete with gate charges going for Ksh500 for main stand and Ksh200 for terraces.

The green army was scheduled to play City Stars on Saturday before departing for a friendly match at Murang’a Mucipal Stadium against Murang’a Combined.

The Sudanese who have been in the country for the last one week earned a first round bye in Champions League and will meet the winner between Black Mambas of Swaziland and FC Platinum of Zimbabwe in the second round slated for March 23-25.

For Gor, it will be their last match before starting the season with the SuperCup clash against Tusker on February

  • El-Merreikh is a good team, and with the added advantage of regularly participating in the continental championships, should provide Gor with a sterner test. They will be missing some of their best players because of the AFCON, hence Gor should be able to go toe to toe with them. Coach Awono, this is the type of matches that you should use to lay down the marker to your opponents.
Good luck to the team, GREEN ARMY.
