Ferroviario 3 Gor Mahia 0

It was a nightmare match for Gor Mahia as they sunk by 3 goals to Mozambican outfit. Gor Mahia were under pressure from the very beginning and looked uncertain and shaky throughout.

A 3rd minute goal from a defensive lapse gave the Mozambicans the lead. The goal was scored by Clesio Bauque after he capitalized on a miscue by Ivan Anguyo. It could have been worse after 30 minutes as Gor Mahia conceded a penalty. But Jerim Onyango dove to his right and saved the penalty. Gor Mahia appeared unsettled in the first half but good defensive work from Jerim, Teddy and Musa saved the day. As the first half drew to a close, Duncan Makori replaced Ibrahim Kitawi.

15 minutes into the second half, Ferroviario had the upper hand as they pinned Gor Mahia in their own half for long periods. The fans continued to urge them on and it paid.  A miscue by Moses Otieno gifted the ball to Dario Tchitcho who sent a long range screamer that saw Ferroviario take a 2-0 lead.

After conceding the second goal, Gor Mahia started coming more and more into the game in search of that crucial away goal. Moses Odhiambo came in for Victor Ali. With 10 minutes to go Gor Mahia still had not had a decent shot on goal. And on 82 minutes, the hosts grabbed the 3rd goal courtesy of Diogo.  Gor Mahia appeared to be in disarray as the Mozambicans pinned them in their own half in search of a 4th. A few minute later , the Malawian referee denied Gor Mahia a penalty leaving the players distraught. As the final whistle went, Collins Okoth was shown the red card for a second bookable offence.

All in all a forgettable day for Gor Mahia with shades of 1991 against Highlanders of Zimbabwe. Kogalo now faces an uphill task in the return leg.

These huge losses don’t do our name any good. A big team such as Gor Mahia should not go down so heavily. It does not augur well at all.

Was it the officiating? Was it a case of technical incapacitation? Ill-preparation? Underestimating an unknown opponent? Stage fright?

For a team that scores an average of 1 goal per match wiping the 3 goals may require rocket science.

  • Lets wait 4 the appraisal/rating by the technical team before we pass judgement. However, earlier reports indicate that our defence mst have bn the main undoing of the team. I stand to be corrected but I feel the coach was limited by the injuries in the team. Hwever, coach AA, I still consider the defence line of Musa, Juma, Owino, Anguyo to be better than whn you play Kevin at the back. Hear me out coach and field defenders to do defending. Thank you.

We can overturn this deficit into 4 nil. As much as we do not want to blame anyone, Anguyo has this habit of miscuing balls that he should be playing safe.

Bwana coach n team this is simply unacceptable.GM is by far the best supported club (look at the attendance of tusker’s match) but neither this nor pledged financial rewards seem to have any effect on the team. The team has thrown away 2million in reward in the last 2months.Apart frm having the most wide/loyal fan base the team cant get much right even the correct shade of our green K’galo kit.AA you r definitely beta than ua predecessor but am starting 2 wonder whether you can take GM 2 the next level?

Please correct me but I believe Anguyo joined Gor Mahia as part of the attack force and he is just being moulded into a defender starting late last year. It will take him some time to fit in the defense. He has tried his best so far though not good enough.

    1. Ivo/Jerry(both good)2 Owino,3 Juma 4 Anguyo 5 Mosoti 6.Gatusso 7. Kevin Ochieng(Kevin Otieno/Rama)or rama starts 8 Ali 9.Ngwa 10 Hugo(Kiplagat/Baloteli 70′) 11 Makori(Moses Odhiambo) any day you have musa muhamed playing with moses otieno we get hammered, these two boys however good they r like loosing balls easily.

GM has been rebuilding for the last 4 years and that is our main problem. The team James Siang’a recruited has now effectively been haphazardly replaced. That was a young team that should have been left to mature with time. As it is now, members of that team are maturing in other teams not GM. The problem is THAT as a club with fans, history and tradition we still have not found a formula to translate our support into a solid financial base for the club to enable the run an effective and stable first team supported by a vibrant age group and youth teams. So every year we are constantly signing and rebuilding with hardly any time for players to gel. We the impatient Gor fans have also had our share of disturbing influence and we must take our share of responsibility. in today’s game, it is impossible to just sign the best 11 players and go ahead and win everyday. I hope we learn pole pole.

I have taken my time to go through your comments after the match and as usual, there is varied reactions. It is sad we went down three goals to naught with the Mozambican side but we still have one more chance to come back into the game.

Make no mistake. This is no mean task. The technical bench must work extrahard or else we kiss the championship goodbye early.

We might be quick to blame jet lag, poor fielding, lack of confidence, inexperience and all other manner of excuses. I urge the team to remain focus and patriotic. For the umpteenth time, Gattuso was red carded. That means the utility defender will not be available for the next match. I will start to believe some of colleagues who castes aspersion on the character of this boy.

After watching Gor play Thika United last week, I commented on this very blog that Gor is not ready for Continental football. As usual some of us did not take that lightly. The fact is we are still far from competing with the best in Africa. Let us not cheat ourselves, there is no way Gor will overcome this deficit. Solution is, keep this team together for long and get rid of indiscipline players like Gattuso. Give the technical team time. Let us not make the mistake of hounding out the bench like we did with Sianga, ZD etc. There is no short cut to success, we must work hard and be patient. For God and my club Kogallo

Let’s remember that Club Africain still went ahead and won the CAF cup despite being hammered 4 – 1 by Sofapaka. Our strength is on how fast we can rise after being beaten. I therefore still feel that there is hope. Afterall this is football and it will not be the first time a team has come from 3-0. Once the injuries will have healed we will be back to our elements. What we should not do is to blame the tech team or players. Getting a red card in a match and behavior off the field should not be tied together. I have seen players getting the red card just to save the team conceeding a goal.

MYOPIC KENYANS-Having watched tusker take on apr at nyayo yesterday and getting the maputo results,my opinion is that the main problem we have is the calibre of coaches we have coupled with no football structures i.e youth football.our players lack basic skills in soccer such as ball control, off the ball movement, fast thinking ,taking advantage of set pieces and throw ins and a pedestrian approach to soccer and these are all symptoms of poor coaching and nonexistant youth tier systems.no matter how passionate we are as fans without investing in a serious soccer academy then we have no place in modern soccer.the reason why we hear excuses of giving the coach time for the team to gel is because of lack of youth structures to feed the main team with players who understand the teams way of playing. As long as we keep on buying half the team then lets be ready to live with such results.a player from the clubs academy will not have problems adjusting to the senior team and will easily gel with his seniors.the academy is also a much cheaper and sustainable way of ensuring success for a club as the mighty barcelona have shown us.we urge the incumbent office to work on ways of building one immediately to secure the future success of the institution.we are ready and willing to chip in in cash, training equipments and materials when called upon to do so.

Greetings Wuonpap. Remember you owe this blog an explanation as to why you went underground. Am glad you are back because there was always something missing here.
I believe Rama is the kind of player you have described above. Problem is he is under-utilised.

As pointed out @12 in the post by Oduor12 and also alluded by Le Pastre @22, the coaching is quite pedestrian. Bear with me @23 Albert Kosero (Sofaset Branch Kampala) in-as-much as I admire and respect your well thought our in-puts, I wish to remind us that “Wepukhulu” the Dutch coach of our in-laws was an instant success and he is not even a year old with the team. The thing is technical know-how, passion for the team and hunger for success- attributes which we are lacking on our side of the fence.

  • Though long, my analysis are always aimed at raising valid questions and tryng to provide answers to the same. We must not have a back 5 which is in constant transition / rotation. Its only Yusuf Juma who has so far cemented his place in the defence. Pls my dear coaches, all trophy winning teams have a tried and tested first 11, starting wth the foundation- the back 5. Where is our recognized back 5? Wht self respecting coach tries new combinations in a real match situation, moreso against an unknown opponent? Thats exactly what our beloved AA just did in Mozambique yesterday!! I cried 4 the defènce to be sorted out long b4 the transfer period was closed. We have 9 strikers and only a miserly 7 outright defenders and 3 converted or to be converted defenders? These 3 are Kevin Ochieng, Teddy Akumu and Ivan Anguyo!! Why try to convert Kevin whn he has the guile, the power and pace to be one of the best wide men in the team / country! We have enough quality in the middle. David Owino acquintted himself so well playng alngside Mosoti during the Dstv Cup match, so why was he not played against Feroviaro? Why buy a player if you knw you are not going to use him? Why distablize Musa by continuosly moving him btwn central defence and full-back? Thats wht you get- an unsettled back 5 (the foundation) of a team. We will continue to sip in more goals until the issue of a settled back 5 is addressed conclusively. Why do we pepper the cracks in the defence by constantly shifting players in and out of position instead of training them tactically and technically to be suited to their roles? Can you imagine Leo Messi playing in the defence 4 Barca? Why has the Sec Gen gone so quiet when we need real answers to our very pertinent questions? Can we guess? The refree frm Malawi must have bn biased in his officiating!! From day 1 I hve voiced my concern on playing Anguyo as a central defender (converted) over D. Owino (a natural defender.) After the Dstv Cup match, I gave a very comprehensive analysis of the 4 most important qualities that differenciate a great coach from a good coach. 1. His ability to prepare a team both on and off the pitch. His ability to technically and tactically appreciate and appraise players. (he must insist on tactics application on the field) 2. His ability to field as per the demands of the game ie (home) or (away), the opponent and the importance of the match. 3. His ability to make correct – tactical substitutions during the match. 4. His ability to address previously noticed defeciencies / weaknesses before the next game! The jury is still out there to judge the performance of the technical bench on these grounds. For EXAMPLE- In the last match, we were (away) so the coach should hav used 4:5:1 system, wth- Jerim, Juma, Owino, Musa, Kevin Ochieng, mid- Anguyo, Gattuso, M. Otieno, Abondo, Makori and Ngwa. I believe Anguyo is beta at shieldng the defence whn plyd as a deep lying no 6. (false stopper) His aggresive nature and huge and tall frame ala (Pat Vieira) can be used effectively in screening the defence wth litle worry of causing penalties. Abondo and Makori should hve provided some width going forward. The trio of Gattuso, M. Otieno and Anguyo should have shared the load of creating, screening and shielding the defence. We greatly missed the inelegible duo of Ballotieno and Mosoti. We must regroup, refocus and hope that we will have all our injured players back in two weeks time. Coach AA, its only jst but half-time, you now know what you hve to do to sail through. Its stil doable so go 4 it GOR MAHIA. Remember, ‘fortune favours the brave’. Go go go go go Gor Mahia. Good luck.

I am sympathetic with claims of biased refereeing should they arise. What do you expect between Malawi and Mozambique? That denied penalty was so crucial for our come back and the referee knew that.

Let us not link Gattusso’s red card with his otherwise lunar crises off the pitch. The boy must have given it his all and the ref took note and earmarked him for elimination in ‘installments’.
May we regard that red card as his sacrifice for K’ogalo- a collateral of battle.

@30 Le Pastre there is every sense in your observations. It is a pity that the relevant authority(ies) does/do not see things your way. The question that begs for an answer is why replace a natural defender (Owino) for a naturalised one (Anguyo)? Has the technical bench reached a cul-de-sac?

EC & Tech bench please do something and save us from the pain and indignity of waking up in the morning and the first unpleasant memory is that your team was hammered 3-0. You wish it is a dream but unfortunately it is the truth.

  • @32 Arrumtiddi you have said a very important thing which should not be ignored. Currently most of our players, managers and tech bench visit this site and any other GM site and if we have some comments which don’t inspire the players/tech bench one bit then it means that we are not changing from the bad habits of last year. Let’s all support the team and not be like other teams which only support the team when it’s winning. We have Muhoroni and Tusker to play to bring back our confidence. Let’s make sure our negative criticism is not geared towards the person of any of our team members

  • Jackowili

@32 Arrumtiddi your thoughts are wisely and diplomatically articulated but may I ask: how many lessons do we need to learn? When we were hammered 5-0 by APR didn’t we “learn”? How about the recent 3-0 mauling by Mike Baraza? Or are we slow learners? Worse still, are we unteachable?

Our current game lacks strategy and style. It is simply disgraceful. The EC missed a great opportunity of radical surgery to the technical bench at the end of last season. Had a surgical debridement been done a new tissue of the bench could have granulated and matured by now. It is too late for now.

Way forward: 1.Let us pray hard that EC gets actively involved in the treatment of all injured players so that they are ready for the return leg. 2. Contract Coach Ezekial Akwana for the return leg only as he appears to have the silver bullet!!!. 3. Petition CAF to include Ballotieno and Mosoti even as we pay the fine for late inclusion.

To some my suggestions may be outrageous but psychologists will tell you that it is the normal response of one who is in grief.

We brought in an experienced Camerounian coach, one who does not waste talented players like Kitawi, Macheda, Kiplagat etc, brought in the best players from last season league. Je tuko wapi? Our biggest problem as fans is that we direct our guns to the wrong enemies. The problem is not the coach neither is it the players but those who want quick fixes. Now you read some characters on this blog drawing the lineup for the coach. Let us face it, we know nothing about the team if not football coaching. We are mere spectators. Let us stick to that very important role. Leave the lineup business to the technical team. I am glad @wuonpap is now seeing what 95% of us are not. I have said and I repeat, there are no short cuts to success. For those not aware Sony are on top of the table after winning in Oserian this afternoon. With proper organisation and calmness in all the sectors of GM we will make it. We all need to believe we can do it and the negative energy from some of us will not do us any good. SONY could be leading now but let’s not forget that Rangers and KCB led last year until … AFC who were literally in the relegation zone ended 5th. Ask yourself why? Valid suggestions but you can bet Awono don’t av time to read your worthy contributions.we need an Official Gor website where we can pour all that resides inside our very hearts.I can assure all of you than no one is listening and tonait don’t be surprised to see Anguyo where he shouldn’t be in the line-up.In Gor,all of us are bright so who do we follow first.Sianga had this special magic to identify talent and put evry player in their rightful position but you don’t need to guess how he was evacuated by the army.If he is normal i don’t think he can give any form of advice to guys who are ever clever. So to those who care to listen,Gor Mahia has appointed officials, caoching staff who are mandated to do wht you are suggesting and if they can’t do it then very soon a group of fans will do the usual running them out of their responsibilities.this is a third world club in a fourth world country right inside a fifth world continent.don’t expect any 1st or 2nd class service anytime soon.
