Peter Opiyo is back in town

Midfield maestro Peter Opiyo who made a splash last season for both Kogalo and for the national team is back in the country after trials with Super Sport of South Africa. The Pretoria based team is currently in the midst of a succesful Africa champions league campaign. Past players include current Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise. Despite being unable to break into Super Sport Opiyo seems to be in high spirits and eager to rejoin his former team mates. Opiyo had previously attended trials with Fortuna Dusseldorf of the German second tier.In general it is much more difficult for a Kenyan player to break into bigger leagues. To begin with, the perception amongst foreign teams is that Kenya football is dysfunctional and has corrupt leadership and therefore cannot produce good footballers. As such Kenyans who attend trials have an uphill task. It is not helped by the fact that Kenya lacks sound youth development.

Should Opiyo gel with the current team, Kogalo could be in for a successful run. Opiyo was after all a pivotal player as Gor Mahia embarked on a successful second leg last season. And the club will need him as this season is appearing tougher with even bottom clubs proving to be tough.
