Postponement of Thika Match is welcome news

The decision by KPL to postpone the match against Thika United which was scheduled for this weekend to July 6 is a welcome one. KPL took the decision due to the fact that three Gor Mahia players are travelling to Brazil having been sponsored by the president. As they are in Brazil they will miss crucial training time and return home jet lagged and unable to perform on the field.

In addition, Gor Mahia needs some time to go back to the drawing board. Their performance in the last four games has been below par and a far cry from their form in April and May. With the loss of key players such as Sserunkuma who will be in Denmark for trials, Kevin Omondi, Wanyonyi , Kenga and Anthony Akumu, coach Williamson likely needs time to go back and find a working combination. He will need time to assess returnee Collins Okoth who will slot into the void left by Akumu. Also returning after a long layoff is Patrick Oboya.

All things considered, Gor Mahia still has a squad that is strong enough to retain their position in the league. Herbert Kopany looks promising. What he currently lacks is composure which will come when he gets more exposure. And despite what the naysayers say, Blackberry will regain his form. It is likely that he is suffering from a lack of confidence stemming from the fact that his endavours in Denmark and Ukraine did not work out. What he needs is a run of consistent playing time and for coach Williamson to design strategies that play into his strengths. As soon as he scores he will regain his confidence. Strikers often need a jolt of confidence to regain their form. That is unless he is playing with injuries. Kevin Omondi and Kenga will be missed. But keep in mind that Gor Mahia still have Erick Ochieng who often kept them on the bench.
