Rama off to Qatar

Although the details on the deal are still scanty, Rama was spotted at JKIA on August (Sunday 11) where he confirmed that he was departing for the Gulf

Gor Mahia striker Rama Salim has left the country for Qatar where he is reportedly set to join a Division Two side for a professional stint.

Although details on the deal remain scanty, Rama was spotted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Sunday (August 11) where he confirmed that he was leaving for the Gulf, coincidentally, on the same fight with former Tusker midfielder David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng, who left to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Taawon.

When reached for comment on the details on his move to the Qatar second tier, the former Congo United midfielder said he had left an official statement at the club.

“There is a statement I left behind with the club. please get in touch with them, said Rama who is believed to have been in contact with Al-Marhiya, a second tier side in Qatar.”

The plane left JKIA at 1645hours to Qatar where Rama could be plying his trade if the deal goes through while ‘Cheche’ will connect from there to Saudi. Rama joined Gor Mahia ahead of the 2012 season on a two year deal which is set to expire in mid December 2013.

The decision by Rama to quit Gor Mahia, comes days after the team’s top hierarchy stated that they were not willing to let the influential player depart.

“We met with representatives of the Qatari club that intends to sign Rama Salim and while we do not mind releasing the player, he cannot go now. At the moment we are chasing the league title and he can only leave at the end of the season,” Gor Mahia secretary George Bwana told Goal.

As it is now the best thing is to wish him well and embark on supporting the team to ensure we carry the title.Rama served us well during his stay in the team and we should pray for him to be successful in his new team.
As for the EC, i can only sympathise with them as the player had made his mind after the trials and there is nothing they could do.This is not something happening out of the ordinary as some of us may want to portray it, for those who have changed jobs they clearly understand the situation when an employer wants to reject your resignation letter.
My prayer is that at the moment we need to focus on how to support the team to winning the title thereafter we can address the shortcomings/strength of the current office bearers and whether we should re-elect them or otherwise.

Honestly, I do not understand what hullabaloo concerning Rama is all about. Players come and go. This is a player who has given his best to the club and it is only right to let him go in good faith. It is not a crime to leave Gor Mahia. Those blaming the EC, I just wonder what some of us expected them to do. Even if EC would have insisted on not releasing Rama, he would have left at the expiry of his contract which is hardly 4 months away at no free. What guarantee do we have that if he is not let to go, he would give his best. Once an employee decides to go, good management ethics dictates that he should be allowed to go. NO ONE IS TOO INDISPENSABLE TO LET GO. Rama was not sold but rather was sought after by Qatari club, and that is where his heart was, why then lynch the EC. Does it mean that Gor is allowed to buy players but not loose any? In any case it is the official FIFA transfer window. Let us be moderate in our reactions concerning certain things.

Sadly seems GM is not big enough 2 retain Rama @ this crucial time in its campaign. 2 me several issues arise frm the fact that its 2 A MERE QATARI DIV 2 SIDE
    1. The bloated EC was divided into 3 AR apparently against the move,Faiz for it,Bwana kigeugeuing in between. But seems papers were signed frm GM’s side. Note similar cases of Rooney/Saurez r deadlocked.
    2. What made Rama leave-medical cover, car, increased salary & by how much.I.E CAN WE COMPETE OR SHOULD WE PREPARE 4 AN EXODUS

    3. IF GM can lose a key player,at such a critical time,in such a manner 2 such an unknown team then given the exposure our team gets through SS & the support of the 12th man will we really have a team stable enough to be a continental or even a regional champion. IS GM NOW A SOCCER ACADEMY R WE ONLY SATISFIED WITH WITH TPL TITLE AT MOST.
    4. We need a revolution in GM structures, like a good coach, player welfare, stability is paramount & is not cheap. CHOOSE FAT EC OR TP MAZEMBE ETC WAY

  • Gor’s EC should be advised to extend crucia players contracts way in advance of the contracts expiration date and not wait until the contracts expire or nears to expire. So what was the EC’s plan? To have talks at the end of his contract? At that point other teams will try and recruit him. Look at what AFC did with Mike Barasa; his contract was also due to expire in December but was extended by 2 year in JUNE. Now that is good contract management

  • Why are people blaming the EC ! Why are some people even Talking Abt renewing contracts? Here lies the ANSWER- its the time to buy and sell players by major football League Teams all over the World. Its called FIFA transfer window and it ends on the Midnight of 2nd September 2013. Its up to FKF to synchronise our Calendar with tht of FIFA. Wake up Nyamweya and your group. This Way GM would have simply signed a replacement for Rama using the funds from his sale. If Rama didn’t have a contract with GM my dear friends, he would have gone on the first probing. Its called having the talents but lacking the financial muscle to keep all your talents happy. For those not conversant with football transfer period, I say welcome. You will experience lots of both bad and good emotions during this period. Just ask Arsenal-Manchester Utd , Liverpool and Chelsea fans. Good Luck Rama.

  • LePastre, you are dead wrong! In this world, you play by the rules you are given. Based on the EXISTING transfer rules in Kenya, Gor’s EC would have been well served should they have extended Ramas contract earlier on. What you are talking about is nothing but wishfull thinking. We play by EXISTING rules!

  • I would like to thank Rama Salim for getting gor to where it is. It is upto the rest of the team to ensure we do not slip back and loose the title.

The way I see it is that we will get a “Joshua to take us to Cannan” The good thing is that other teams are also drawing and no one should expect that only Gor Mahia – on it own will blow away the title.

    All the best Rama

  • Why do you blame EC? Rama has done well and it is time to move on both for Rama and Gor Mahia.

On EC, we do not need 12 officials. We just need five that should comprise of Chairman & Deputy, Secretary & Deputy and Treasurer. The rest of positions should be scrapped to have a lean EC not bloated.

It will be upon the EC to set up secretariat to be headed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Finance and Administration Director, Technical Director and Marketing & Fund Raising Director all in payroll with performance contracts. We need to be talking about TOR and job descriptions of the staffs at secretariat. This will be a right step in turning the club into a professional outfit that will attract sponsors from all over the world.

At the apex, we need to have Gor Mahia Holding Ltd and at bottom the main football club, investment company and youth club. One day, I would like to be a shareholder of the Gor Mahia Holdings Ltd, which should be the parent company at apex.

The proposed five member EC should be turned into board of directors who sole mandate will be steering the board activities, governance structure and long term strategies. We need to make Gor Mahia a money making business for posterity.

The board members must be seasoned people in business or professionals with adequate education level.

  • On the forthcoming election, the club need to set up a vetting board to vet all interested candidates. This vetting will usher in new officials that will be required to turn the club into a professional outfit. The vetting will rid out non starters and useless candidates.

We need a total overhaul EC by voting out the likes of Bwana, Faiz, OJ, Nyandega, Ngala, Kilo, etc. We can only keep Ambrose Rachier for the good work he has done and add only four new faces.

The jury is with the fans whether they want Gor Mahia our clamored club to change or perish.

Gor is a big team with huge support and fan base. This is our strength and greatest asset of the club which need to be turned into money making business.

Gor Mahia has been banned from using Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) facilities indefinitely following acts of hooliganism and vandalism that were witnessed in the club’s league match against City Stars on Sunday 4 August at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In a communiqué to media houses, signed by the SSMB acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Gabriel Komora, the club has been asked to furnish the board with a strategy on how it plans to deal with hooliganism in future while at the same time they have been slapped with a Kshs 2.8 million invoice to service the damages.

    Inside and outside the stadium

The communiqué states clearly that the ban is due to the damages done inside and outside the stadium after the game, specifically seats, a section of the stadium’s perimeter fence and a gate.

-The ban, which affects both home and away matches takes effect immediately and will last indefinitely. The board has also sent an invoice bearing the cost of the damages occasioned by the vandalism amounting to Kshs. 2.8 million.

    Elaborate plan

-Further, the board demands that Gor Mahia Football Club must furnish it with an elaborate plan of how the club intends to deal with hooliganism among their fans. The plan should also clearly indicate the club’s commitment to take responsibility for the behavior of their fans whenever they commit an offense, the release read in part.

The ban throws into disarray the forthcoming game, pitting Gor Mahia at home to AFC Leopards which is scheduled for Sunday 25 August and had been listed to be played at Kasarani.

  • @Albert Kosero, thanks. We fans have to give ideas on how best our club can be run.

Gor Mahia has great potentials more than any team in the KPL. I think it is time to explore these potentials to the fullest capacity.

We have to think big as fans and club in order to go places.

  • @Jasawagongo:Thank you for your great thoughts. Indeed Rama did his part and if the EC did not do their part well enough, then may be this could be an opportunity to learn from. However, I believe that they must have tried only that Rama followed up where he stopped the previous time he went for trials just before the TPL started. The good thing is, GOR is a team that comprises of many players whom I believe are there on merit. This is a chance for some of them to wear the shoes and even be better than Rama. The fact is,”The milk is already spilt but the Cow is not dead.” Believe in yourselves that we will be the champs.
