Rarely does a player have an impact on a club and its fans the way Abbass Khamis Magongo had on Gor Mahia and its fans in the years from 1984 and 1991. Ask any longtime Kogalo fan to pick the best all time player of the club and they will more than likely name the man fondly known as “Zamalek”. As any Kenyan fan and supporter of Harambee stars who the best midfielder ever to play for Kenya is and they will most likely say Abbass Khamis Magongo. Indeed the above two sentiments are confirmed by online polls.

Without a doubt he was our best no 10 ever.He donned the Gor shirt with so much pride.Our history is rich.Still i find it disturbing that years later we still do not have our own home ground where such players can be trully immortalized.They gave so much to our club and nation.Thank you for the good analysis.Thank you Zamalek for the wonderful legendry football.

Good Piece it really moved me, Just located this site yesterday and it touched me , rekindled fond memories of the greatest football club (at least for me). BTW remember Magongo was also passionately known as ORIEKO (translated to mean cleverness/shrewdness). RIP in ORIEKO you gave us many unforgetable moments.
i remember with nostalgia the Magongo,Dawo and Ndolo Trio especially when they beat Dragons of Benin and Inter Club of Congo in The Mandela Cup.We would hop into the Gor Bus from SOUTH B into Nyayo or City.
Thanks for this, I have always reiterated that “orieko” as some of us called him, is the best midfielder to ever play for Gor and Kenya. Was way ahead of his time

It occured to me as a dream way back in Uganda. i thought i should surf about this legendery Kenyan footballer of the 1980s and 90s. I used to read about his football exploits in the newaspapers and radio Kenya especially that incident when he was given a red card against Egyptian club Zamalek. It is very absurd that he passed on so early. RIP AKM
Good piece, only one tiny observation, the goal against Esperance in Tunis was not a TAP IN, it was a long range blockbuster after he beautifully controlled with his chest, it beat the keeper all the way and hit the roof of the net and sparked some delirious celebrations by the Gor players who seemed to be the only Kenyans in the stadium.
the second goal against afc leopards in 1985 was scored by goro oronge. please refer to newspapers of that time. it was a pass from onyango fundi from deep midfield and goro finished it off with a touch, otherwise good reflection of abbas magongo.
Am left without any doubt to all K’Ogallo amd Harambee stars fans that ABBA MAGONGO,JOGOO,SHEBE,HESBON,OBWAKA,BOBBY and all Gor playing unit.

Just as john Boby Ogolla played with a bandage against Uganda Cranes in East and Central Africa, Abbas Khamis Mango played with a bandage on his injured arm against Malawi “the flames” in All African games semi final and propelled Harambe stars to the final against the Pharaos! It was a memorable match. Honestly Gor Mahia players of that time had a team spirit at heart, and were dedicated.
hey admin so glad you made a piece about him.my dad was a real kogalo hero.however,he died 29th january 2001 in nairobi.he did nt die in malindi 2003.thanks alot fans for acknowledging him.i lost a dad n a mentor.but u lost a legend.forever in our hearts.rip
