Madagascan goalkeeper Jean Claude Razafindralambo will likely never forget George Odembo Nyangi. Between 1987 and 1988, Nyangi scored four times against him for both club and national team. In the opening leg, George Onyango put Gor Mahia ahead with a brilliant grass cutter. BTM equalized when the speedy Jean Claude Rabeamanana intercepted an errant back-pass. George Nyangi scored the winner in the second half.

The return leg was tense. BTM needed a 1-0 win to advance. But late in the match, Nyangi ended the Madagascans dream when he scored to give Gor Mahia a 1-0 win.

Quarter Final

1st Leg (Nairobi) Inter Club 1 Gor Mahia 2 (Hezron Osuka, Peter Dawo)

2nd Leg: (Brazaville) : Inter Club 4 Gor Mahia 1

In the opening leg, Gor Mahia were a depleted side especially in midfield. Abbas Magongo had left camp when his mother suddenly died and he went to attend the funeral. Charles Otieno never showed up in residential camp. Later it was announced that he had moved to Mombasa where he found employment.  John Okello Zangi was expelled by club Chairman Oyieng Odolla.

Gor Mahia battled gamely with new signing and recent school leaver Hezron Osuka scoring the first goal. Inter equalized from a quickly taken free-kick by Benoit Mabiala. Late in the second half, substitute Mike Otieno made a charging run down the left flank and crossed to Peter Dawo who scored the winner and in the process ended his goal drought.

In the second leg, Gor Mahia were unable to train in Brazaville having been assigned a training ground  near an army target shooting range. With the sound of machine gun fire and mortars , Gor Mahia could not train due to perceived danger. They were forced to train by jogging  around their hotel swimming pool.
