Gor Mahia in Africa

Gor Mahia in the 1993 CAF Cup

In the opening round, Gor Mahia scored a typical away win in Kampala against Uganda Coffee thanks to a thunderous free-kick by new sigining James Atuto, a younger brother to former Gor Mahia player George Otieno “Vigo”. Apparently powerful shots run in that family. In the return leg, a disjointed Gor Mahia barely created any chances, conceded a goal from a goalmouth melee and were lucky to escape on penalties.

In the second round, Gor Mahia appeared all but finished when they lost to Hellenics of Cape Town, a team that was comprised entirely of white South Africans. The first return leg was played at a rain drenched Nyayo stadium. The match was abandoned late in the second half when the match officials declared the pitch unplayable. The replay was played the following day at City Stadium and Gor Mahia won 2-0 thanks to a spririted effort by players like Tobias Ocholla who was active on the left flank, Dan Shikanda who scored the first goal and Joseph Owino who scrambled the second goal home after the Hellenic goalkeeper failed to hold onto a shot.

In the quarter-finals, Gor Mahia appeared to have set themselves up for success with an away draw against the Angolans. But yet again in the return leg, Gor Mahia were unable to conjure up any goals. The Angolans resorted to wasting time in anticipation of a penalty shootout which they won.
