Gor Mahia were coached by former skipper Austin Oduor. In the opening leg at Kasarani, The Ethiopian side dominated posession, reducing Gor Mahia to spectators for most of the game. However it was Gor Mahia who were more decisive in front of goal. They created very few chances but scored two goals in the first half. First Mike Otieno made a powering run down the right flank then crossed to Aggrey Obonyo who soared above the Ethiopians to head home the ball. Then Tom Okaya unleashed a ferocious volley from outside the penalty box to score.

Abbas Magongo who had been the centre of the fiasco 10 years earlier when a Gor Mahia vs Zamalek match was abandoned, returned to Gor Mahia after a 3 year stint in the Middle East and played in this match.
In the opening leg at Nyayo, It was Gor Mahia who thoroughly dominated possession. However Zamalek scored against the run of play when Ayman Mansour picked up a long pass, calmly chested the ball and planted the ball past Charles Omondi Korea in the Gor Mahia goal. It looked like a well rehearsed move. Gor Mahia fought back late and equalized via striker Eric Obura who compeleted a good move by Zedekiah Otieno.
In the return leg, Gor Mahia fought against biased officiating. Zamalek scored from penalties. Charles Omondi Korea twice saved a penalty but each time the referee declared that he had moved before the kick was taken
