Gor Mahia fans could not stomach losing both legs to the Zimbabwean side.

After winning the league in 1995, the 1996 season was a significant disappointment. It marked the first time in nearly twenty seasons that Gor Mahia had finished outside the top three slots in the league. It was the beginning of a major decline that would see Gor Mahia go 18 seasons without a league title
