Ali Abondo now back in Kenya

Ali Abondo, who inexplicably left Gor Mahia on free transfer early in the season is now back in the country after his sojourn in South Africa with Ajax Cape Town ended suddenly.

“Abondo is back home and I don’t understand what went wrong in South Africa. However, he belongs here for now because he is still registered with this great club. The best we can do now is to probably welcome him back home.” said a source to goal.com

South Africa has not been a happy hunting ground for Kenya players of late with Paul Were, Kevin Omondi and now Abondo. Some players have had difficulty obtaining work permits.

Top 8: Gor Mahia to play Ushuru again

Gor Mahia will open their defense of the KPL Top 8 trophy when they take on Ushuru FC on May 2. The match offers Gor Mahia an opportunity to make amends for having dropped two points against Ushuru on Sunday.  Coach Ze Maria thinks they should have won.
“We lost a penalty, but that was not the only thing. We had many chances like six or seven which we should have easily converted in that match but we did not,” he said of Sunday’s fixture. He added: “Now that we have been drawn against them in the Top-8 tournament, it gives us a chance to score goals and win it considering that it is a knockout and you only have one opportunity. They are a tough team and we will work hard to overcome them.”  he said to the Standard.
Last year Gor Mahia beat Muhoroni Youth 3-0, beat Tusker 4-3 on aggregate and beat SoNy Sugar 2-1 to lift the trophy.

  • This comment is not aimed at anyone but Kenyan players shud stop thinking that success in soccer is about pulling socks up to ur thighs and uncombed hair. Most of our players luck discipline . One thing any Kenyan shud know is that no foreign club will take them seriously given the low ranking Kenyan finds itself in. Its like Kenya recruiting steeplcahse runners from Nigeria. You will be patronised but at the end of the day you will get the kind of treatment we read in this column. The mere fact that Abondo had to resign from Gor b4 the S.African club talked to him was the clearest indicator of how low opinioned, his new would-be club, were of Kenyan soccer. Kenyan players shud understand that so long as the country is MIA in the African scene, in both club n country, they shud continue to expect to expect such treatment. Dstv is not a panacea to success. My call, disband Harambee stars, concentrate on under 17 n 20 tournaments until the day Kenya not only qualifies but gets a podium finish in Africa cup Youth tournment, the rest will take care of itself.

  • He should not be even allowed to come closer to the club. With due respect to him I think he need the dose of his own medicine.. I urge the EC not to resign him because he cajoled the office and left at the time we needed him most.

I don’t understand how then this players never learn or they are not properly advised by their agents that down south is never easy for Kenyans players though it is not a bad thing to try your luck but the manner at which he left his parent club was wrong in the first place and it is like chopping the fingers that has been feeding him.

  • Does is not surprise anyone ? I welcome him back at kogallo with both arms because we have been home to many returnees in the past. The list is endless….

Truth be told South Africans have very low opinion of black Africans and this has to be drilled into the mindset of Kenyan and all other African players.

I think its all a matter of perception.Musa Otieno made it there…Brian Mandela seems to be doing ok.So what or where is the problem exactly?

  • sincerely speaking Abondo was not A SA material it was just because Gor raise his profile to some level.

  • I wished he had remained loyal to the club until his departure. But just being around and refusing to play when Gor needed him most was his main undoing. I don’t support his return.

Abondo made a wrong decision and this should be a good lesson for him. Some body who wanted to sink Gor misled him. However, it is not good to hold grudge, let us welcome him back.

Guys, Abondo has been in the country for quite some time. I think it could be as early as late Feb/early March. Though currently clubless he trains at Ruaraka grounds in the evenings and plays Sunday football with the local team. How I wished he could keep fit by playing competitive football with Gor or any other team as he awaits the season in SA to restart so that he can try his luck again.

Such a waste of talent. Maybe the managers are the ones to blame. The good thing is that Gor gave him his release letter in good faith despite having a running contract so he cannot blame the team for blocking his progress

  • Welcome back Abondo, Life is about trying and everyone is bound to make mistakes during our journeys. Some bloggers think they know alot yet they don’t know that they don’t know. Tuko pamoja na watu wa KIHARA wasichukie fashion and swag of football, ukishazeeka wachia design and fashion kwa vijanaa.
@ Dinga, All over the world dressing and swag is contextual, kunyoa kipara kwa mchezaji ni kama kuenda beach na kitenge, just wach the various leagues across the globe, its a trend and doesn’t affect play. God bless #GMFC

He remains a good attacking midfielder plus one who actually scores thereby relieving the pressure off strikers. He tried his luck as any of us would but ikikataa Rudi mtaani Kogalo Teargas and reclaim your number,it can only be a good thing considering what Keli and his likes are doing in the field of play

Those who are attacking this player on this sight are all having it wrong. How long is an average football career? What is wrong with trying ones luck anywhere in this world? It is about succeeding or failing but try you cannot deny anyone. If Abondo feels at home at Kogalo .then welcome back.

You cannot fault a player for pursuing greener pastures. Players have only about 5-6 years to make money. Once they get a serious injury, their dreams of professional football are over.

Nothing at all is wrong for someone to try his luck out of Kenya. Abondo tried like anyone else could try, just like Olunga, he was criticised seriuosly for going abroad but now he has made it. Wajaluo hawapendagi maendeleo thats why other tribes are doing much better than us. This is the truth that bites and i am ready to absorb any criticism. If any player move out of Gor then he is bad, like if you quite CORD then you are bad its high time we stop this primitive mentality, We are in a free world and anyone has a freedom and should have a freedom to follow his heart. Silazima uzoeeke ukwa Gor to be called good. Wake up guys!!!!!!!!!!

      • My brother nobody is talking about wajaluo, cord and so on here. I didn’t know that Gor is synonymous with Luo. However all the contrary views here are about how and not why he left
Perhaps we don’t understand football! Why couldn’t he play during the Derby and he had not been released? Help me understand. Both Olunga and Kagere had left and there was a lot of hope in him.

  • Abondo has signed a two year deal with Ajax Cape Town and came back to process his work permit. Why dont we do our research well before we ketho wat by going at each other over whether he made a bad decision, is unwelcome at Gor, he is not good enough blah blah……talk about eating humble pie

    • Ali Abondo made the right decision, going for greener pastures. If things didn’t work out, well and good. You move on. Even if Kogallo does not take him back, am sure he will get another good club. Let us mind our own business and leave the young man alone.

A player is a grown up and has a right to choice what he wants to do trying , succeding and failing are al part of life ,if Abondo wants to come back he is free so long as he can perform football is business . And issue of luos don’t love development where did that stereotype come from is a pity still in the present age people believe in such things as this type does these best when we are talking about football let leavethe crazy ideas of tribe aside kogalo is brand that attracts everyone so if into tribe we have societies of our clan mate we can meet and talk about .tribe Abondo if your available welcome back

  • Talking of Luo.The Nairobian reports that a captain and his vice of a community football club came to blows(around 13-19march) after the vice refused to attend ‘meeting za wajaluo’ that the captain had informed the whole team to attend to after training.I have always said Gor must rein on indiscipline and get a good captain post Jerim.
