All set for the derby

The first mashemeji derby of 2015 is set for this Sunday at Nyayo stadium. Despite their indifferent form in the Africa champions league, Gor Mahia’s form on the local scene has been nothing short of superb. Based on current form Gor Mahia should be able to subdue arch rivals AFC Leopards. But anyone who has been following the mashemeji derby for past few years knows that current form is no indicator of the end result. In fact on many occassions, the team that has the most possession and more chances often loses.

Gor Mahia fans will be hoping that current form holds on Sunday. Gone is Dan Sserunkuma, the man who always gave AFC nightmares. The man who fans will be counting on to take Sserunkuma’s mantle and who could make all the difference this Sunday is striker Meddie Kagere. The Rwandese attacker has shown himself to be a poised and deadly finisher. He is proving doubters wrong. When he was signed in January, some fans complained that he was being signed based on his form from 2011 whereas his recent form has not been anything to write about. Indeed Kagere had a forgettable stint in the Albanian league. But his he has resuscitated the form that saw him end as the top scorer in the CECAFA cup. His second goal against KCB left observers with their mouths agape. After picking up a through ball from Michael Olunga, he rapidly weaved his way past his markers before beating former Gor Mahia goalkeeper Zachary Onyango with a brilliantly taken finish.

The Coaching factor

AFC coach Zdravko Logarusic has proven himself an astute tactician when it comes to derbies. Very good at exploiting weaknesses in the other team. During his stint as Gor Mahia coach, he always won the mashemeji derby. It comes as no surprise that he was seen at the KCB match observing Gor Mahia play. Coach Nuttall should be forewarned and rectify any weaknesses that Loga could exploit.

Speaking of Nuttall, he says he is no stranger to derbies.
“I’ve been involved in derbies before and this will not be any different. In Kenya it will be my first derby but I’m ready for it. The players are also ready for the match,” Nuttall said

Recent Record
It has been quite a while since Gor Mahia beat AFC. In fact Gor Mahia never did win the mashemeji derby throughout the tenure of former coach Bobby Williamson. The last match ended in a 2-2 draw.

  • Welcome to the derby folks. We just need to stay focused, determined and work even harder on the match day and we will emerge victors. Coach Frank has the best all round squad and he should be able to lead Gor Mahia to an easy victory over Efusi on Sunday. Sort out the line up especially the defense and we will be hone and dry. 23. Oluoch 3 Sibomana 5 Musa 18. Shakava/26. Glay 14. Nsiygimana 10. Aucho 6. Collins Okoth 30. Abondo 2. Walusimbi 19. Olunga 24. Kagere. Sub : 1. Jerry 15. B. Odhiambo 24. Emuge 20. Wendo. 9. T. Otieno/Wafula 25. Blackberry 7. Omino. With this line up, we are definitely penciled to win this match.

As we praise the team and pour all accolades let’s not forget the initiative to motivate the players. Let’s contribute whatever we can. For those of us who are always keen to criticize and/or disappear when results are not going our way please know that for a derby the dynamics are even more different. Any result is possible but all we can do is to support our team and hope they come out winners

And keep the peace. Potential sponsors are still watching how we handle ourselves before they come on board

Its not a sponsor. Its a company that has offered to donate a portion of its sales to Gor Mahia. So if you are a fan, go buy the bread

I agree totally with Dan, I wish we could have ten more such minds. We are on the radar of all potential sponsors, and by our behavior we can break it or make it; but Dan how many of the people who really need this message are able to read it? Along the roads they are a sorry sight to behold, shouting at all and any one, banging on cars and blocking traffic on roads! Can the EC find a platform that can effectively put this across to the fans so that they get to understand the gravity of their behavior? Large banners and car stickers with themes like ” I AM A KOGALO SUPPORTER I BEHAVE WELL”, ” KOGALO FOREVER,I HATE HOOLIGANISM”, ” I LOVE THE GAME AND LOVE EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE ROADS”, “HOOLIGANISM MAKES ZERO NOT HERO” etc?

like i said…derbies are tricky, they do not necessarily favor the inform team amd this can go either way.whatever the outcome please lets accept and move on…league bado ni changa, and if we lose it wont be the end of the world!!

K’ogalo is playing in the KPL to win the league, while AFC is in the KPL to beat Gor Mahia. Which one is more important? Why worry for nothing?

LET’S MAINTAIN PEACE AND BE OUR BROTHERS KEEPER. ” AMANI NI MIMI” AMANI ANANZA NA WEWE!

Any update on the motivation kitty? please

@Oswozo Mazieck, I agree with you that whatever the outcome we, must move on. Derbies are good because they have a history and also spice up the game. They also act as a test when it comes to bragging rights. I always say that no team goes to the pitch having planned to fail, but they go planning to win. Like any game one of the three things must take place. A win, a draw or a loss. We have a very practical result just last week. Nakuru All Stars hitting Sony at the most unexpected hour. For all Gor Mahia family let us come out in large numbers to support our team for that is what we are known for. Let us brand it and brand it well. About sponsorship, we are on the radar all the time but before it comes, let us the lay the foundation of financial stability by attending all our matches and paying. Gik nono nene onego ayien’g kideny.

I will be there on Sunday and KEEP PEACE and I will ask TEN other supporters to keep peace. Please ask TEN OTHER PEOPLE as well to keep peace. Ten times ten time ten times ten times ten………..tiiiiiiiiiimes TEN. Then who will make noise. Even if we lose the match,so what??? There will be other matches to be played and won. REMEMBER: Ours is to win the league and not just to beat AFC Leopards

Finally I wish to urge the boys to go out there and win it, in fact win everything this time.

The good news is that now Glay is allowed to play in KPL. The headache is that only 5 foreigners are allowed per match. The question is who do we sacrifice for a team that is doing well so far

Just sent Kshs 5100 to Anelka. We have a stronger team than last year and, therefore, am optimistic we shall carry the day. I know Afc(Always Firing Coaches) Leopards will be out to derail our train.Derailed or not Kogalo is Champions elect with only 4 games played.Wenye wivu wajinyonge.
