Blackberry set to move to Europe

George “Blackberry” Odhiambo, the Gor Mahia striker who has taken the Kenya premier league by storm over the past 2 seasons is set to move to Denmark at the end of this season. He will join Randers FC, a team that plays in the Danish top league, the Superliga

Blackberry weaves past hapless defenders in typically brilliant fashion

According to a story appearing in the Standard, Blackberry has been scouted by the Danish side who have even sent scouts to attend Kogalo matches. The team was formed in 2003 and is based in the city of Randers. At Randers, he will play alongside two Senegalese and a Ghanaian. Blackberry will also join another Kenyan already plying his trade in Denmark, Emmanuel Ake.

Blackberry is a product of the Kisumu youth sports Association. His career begun to take shape while at Thur Gem secondary school. He later moved to Kamkunji secondary school. It was while there that he started to play for Gor Mahia. In 2009, he was voted young player of the year after he finished as the second leading scorer in the league. He has found the back of the net 8 times this year despite tight marking in every game. His quick feet and close control have given many a defender nightmares.

Despite its illustrious history, Gor Mahia has never had a player leave the club to join a European side . So Blackberry will be the first. In 1993, defender Sammy Omollo attended trials with English side Bournemouth FC but did not get a contract. 3 years earlier, Peter Dawo was signed by Egyptian side, Arab Contractors where he played for one season.

For keen observers, it was inevitable that Blackberry would soon join the paid ranks given his stellar play and given the exposure that the KPL has afforded players. The story is reminiscent of 1982 when Nahashon Oluoch “Lule” and Sammy Owino “Kempes” then the best players in Kenya left Kogalo for Alabama USA much to the sadness of then Kogalo fans. They were difficult to replace but in subsequent years, players like Sammy Onyango “Jogoo” and Charles Otieno “Engine” ably filled the void. Gor Mahia now has the tall order of finding a player to fill Blackberry’s boots.

This is very good news. The moment our players start attracting scouts from Europe and not required to go for trials but a contract straight away is wonderful. There are so many talented players who drop football immediately after secondary school because its been associated with failures. The moment we have more Blackberrys in Europe, then I see that trend reversing. Football is a serious industry that needs serious managers to run. I am sure we could be having more players in European league if only we had the right managers right from FKL down to clubs. Blackberry the next destination is Barclays premier League. Yes you can. All the best

I am from Denmark and just read that they are looking at Blackberry. So it’s exciting to see where he comes from. I can see you give him nice words on the way to Europe. It’s a good sign.

I hope Blackberry freezes easily. In Denmark it is winter now and the degrees are minus Celsius. So give him warm clothes. Like a hat and mittens …

I’m from Denmark, and i guess that Blackberry will start to play on their U 19 team, which play in the best U 19 league in Denmark, so the manager can see how he is doing with players on his own age. Randers is a good place for young players, i’m playing in Brøndby IF, we are right no leading the U 19 league.

I’m a fan of Randers FC from my home city. It’s great to sign young talents. We have earlier had success signing young people from the African continent, even though we have only signed players from Vestafrica earlier.

Randers FC is not a big club, but the competition in Denmark is really tough, so he’ll have plenty of chances at improving. If he will be a success, it is likely that he will be bought by clubs with more money in Germany, Spain, Italy or England. In that case – some of the money will float back to Kenya 🙂

Good news this. Make your name and that of Kogalo. The current crop at the club is likely to produce more such moves. Good signs indeed for Mahia, this is the way things should be. Kizuri chajiuza, kibaya….? GO,GO GO and let others go too. Zico’s headache begins now. When you make good products be ready to be called upon to make more at short notices.

  • This is excellent news to all Kogalo followers. It is now upon Duncan Owiti, Ngwa, Kevo, Kitawi, Teddy, Colo, Musa, Makori, Erico, Nasio, Abdulmalik, Murunga, Wekesa and other young players to showcase their talents as most of these players have potentials to join other clubs in Europe. Do your SWOT Analysis. Please work on your weaknesses and I can assure you that you too will soon be joining Blackberry in Europe. To all Kogalo fans, Executive Committee, friends and well wishers, let us all join hands and wish Blackberry in his new pursuits and endeavors. To Blackberry, score for us a memorable goal against City Stars as we bide you a farewell to your new club.

GOD BLESS BLACKBERRY, GOD BLESS GOR MAHIA PLAYERS, GOD BLESS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND GOD BLESS FANS IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. AMEN

  • Good news to all Kogalo fans and well wishers. Good move for George Odhiambo Blackberry. Indeed this lad has skills and techniques to play in any league in Europe. The move is also a lesson to other Kogalo and KPL players to copy what Blackberry has done. Being a professional player requires discipline and hard work that Blackberry posses. Discipline both in/out of the pitch; players should avoid over indulging in excessive drinking, manage their private lives with care, avoid many women (have only a single and serious relationship), avoid controversies, look at your diet (eat lots of vegetable/green, avoid fatty foodstuffs), work hard in training, do SWOT Analysis on yourself by looking at your strengths, explore & take the opportunities that come your way, avoid threats to your career in football as well as improving in your weaknesses. Blackberry please keeps the flag of Kenya and Gor Mahia flying higher. Young Blackberries in Nyanza, Western, Nairobi, Rift Valley, Coast, Eastern, Central and North Eastern please come up and take the vacant position of the one and only Blackberry in Kenya. We are proud of you and your skills. I also know that your younger brother at Mbita Hig

Blackberry, even a thousand steps begin from one. This is a journey you began and now you must toil more than ever before to see it through its completion.Fly the Kogalo flag so high. But there is something that I must say to you my brother, you stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of success: In the process of asserting your rightful position, challenges will come your way, but do not forget that a winner is a loser who never quit. Do not seek to quench your thirst for success by drinking from the cup of irresponsible luxury and arrogance . You must forever conduct your struggle on the high plane of dignity, diligence and discipline. Do not allow your creative struggle and committment, to degenerate into myopic, childish, and awkward lifestyle that has been witnessed amongst most of our professionals . Again and again, you must rise to the majestic heights of meeting real challenges with soul force and prayers.Never forget where you have come from ,neither should you lose sight of your child hood dreams. You are truly my year 2010 hero. All the best ,my brother.

Are every body sure that the transfer is due? Randers FC refuse to comment, so maybe the medical check haven’t passed? Or something else?
