FKF declare Gor Mahia 2019-2020 KPL Champions

After much acrimony and opposition from other KPL teams, the FKF have declared Gor Mahia KPL champions

Additional reporting from the Nation

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has confirmed Gor Mahia are the 2019/20 Kenyan Premier League champions.

KPL suspended the league indefinitely to conform to government directives to fight the spread of coronavirus and with the extension of the tight regulations such as the ban on use of all public sporting facilities, night curfew, and inter-county travel, it was clear the season would not end on May 8 as initially planned.

KPL CEO Jack Oguda Monday confirmed the league remains suspended indefinitely but on Thursday Mwendwa took to Twitter to confirm the league will not resume.

FKF argues that according to the rules governing Kenyan football, 68 percent of matches have been played and therefore K’Ogalo are the champions.

“Congratulations Gor Mahia! You are champions once again and you will represent Kenya on the champions league Next season. Lets do this !” Mwendwa tweeted.

While it is still unclear how relegation from the two top leagues will be effected, Mwendwa also confirmed National Super League leaders Nairobi City Stars have also been promoted to the top-tier.

So now let’s wait for Shikanda, Kalekwa and Shimanyula to protest

  • Thank you to the players for their effort. The club really needs to start planning for next season and find ways to keep the playing unit motivated. I am afraid the officials will just relax

    • Shimanyula and Shikanda are cry babies since even if the league was to continue the best KK Homeboys could have attained was third and Sixth place respectively. Remember Tusker was to play Homeboys and I doubt if they could get better of Tusker away and from that Tusker were best placed to clinch position two. Gor was to win this league with a wider margin. Tuache lame excuses.

  • How stupid can someone be!!! Shikanda sounds fine with the league title being handed over to Tusker but not Gor Mahia. In their twisted minds, halfway means means just that regardless of the number of matches each team has played. Gor Mahia had played three matches less than Tusker by halfway stage and Shikanda and Adura wants Tusker declared the champs though Gor Mahia had played fewer matches. This is how dire, pedestrian and foolish some people can be. Anyway, we played our matches at hand and Jumped to the top of the league when all teams had played 16 matches each. Now they should know better. Gor Mahia are the KPL 2019/20 Champions and I can’t see this position being reversed.

Right my Friend Le Pastre, It wont be reversed. The number of cases keep rising and i doubt we will flatten the curve in the near future. KPL doesn’t own our stadia, these belongs to government. The social distancing will also remain with us longer than expected. The same government will give a directive on when the stadia and other sporting facilities would be opened again for use.

KPL is a body on its knees. it cant even pay the 2018/2019 league winners. It will loose terribly.

If the body were to own the stadia then it would have been another story.
