The win increases Gor Mahia’s points tally to 34 on the log which is three better than second placed Tusker who lost 1-0 to Sony Sugar in Awendo

Gor Mahia regained lead at the top of Kenyan Premier League after two second half goals downed Western Stima 2-0 at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on Saturday.

The win increases Gor Mahia’s points tally to 34 on the log which is three better than second placed Tusker who lost 1-0 to Sony Sugar in Awendo.

It is a result that left Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson optimistic about team’s title hopes in a season that has seen his side lose key players and a shirt sponsor.

“This was a very important win for us and it shows that we are still strong enough to defend the title with our new players. The new comers gave a good account of themselves and the fans have something to celebrate,” Williamson told Goal.

It was the second defeat in a row for Stima, who just last Saturday went down 1-0 to Tusker and it left head coach Henri Omino a disappointed man. “We have been having challenges at the back and once again today we were let down by poor defending. We are going back to the drawing board and hope to make some improvement.”

Eric Ochieng’ scored first goal for Gor Mahia in 70th minute before Timothy Otieno added the second six minutes later. Otieno was an instant hero after scoring the second goal as he had earlier in the 50th prevented a John Kariuki goal bound shot from counting.

Gor  Mahia  were in full control at the beginning of the match and were reearded by an early free-kick from which Timothy Otieno was denied by Samuel Odhiambo in the Stima goal. In the 8th minute, Western Stima replied from a counter attack which posed a threat near Gor’s danger zone and its clearance led to Stima’s first corner-kick.

Gor retaliated hard four minutes later pitting Baba kizito whose on-target stroke was deflected by the Stima custodian. The match went on with shifts of ball from Gor’s end to Stima’s end and vice-versa when Ali Bai shot met hard defending.

Five minutes later, John Kiplangat had another chance to put his side ahead but missed as the game ended 0-0 at the end of first half. Urged on by the huge turn out, Gor Mahia were always going to score and indeed did so after putting their opponents under intense pressure to a point where they cracked.

Starting Line-Up

  • I am happy that we won but am not happy with the way we played in the first half & in the 1st 15 min of 2nd half .Jerry is agud keeper but he doesnt know how 2 initiate an attack. he likes kicking the ball for all players including opponents 2 fight for.Thats y I prefer Juma to Jerry. with timothy even if he scored He denied Black Berry his first goal of the season by blocking the ball which was goal bound. He actualy blocked the ball maybe thinking that he was still playing for Talanta and helping his t

Now that we have please do not demoralize the young lad at this moment please find time to talk to him personally and express your misgivings over his type of play.
Keep it up the Big Boys of KPL.We will certainly be back to winning ways inspite of what KRA is throwing our way.

  • It was just laughable how he blocked the goal. Am all smiles just remembering the save but then again God knows what is in a mans heart and it was not intentional coz HE rewarded him with a debut goal. Congratulations Timothy and keep working hard. There is a lot of progress with the team and it was evident with possesion football we exhibited. If we do more of what i saw in the second half then we shall retain the cup (Tusker lost to Sony).
I must commend Gatusso for he has brought stability in front of the back four. I must say that was a very good signing and indeed even the commentators/analyst say so. Agree with another comment above that Jerry should play long balls when necessary. On many occassions he was careless moving forward. Otherwise super super super win for the fans and the technical bench.

  • Congratulations……keep up the tempo especially with kagame cup just around the corner. If we can reopen the 6 -7 point lead that will take us closer to retaining the title.

Amazing how we are now playing with no wide players, 4 central midfield players – okoth, ochieng, kariuki and kizito ! Kariuki and okoth were marvelous, simply outstanding.

Timothy played exemplary well save for the unintentional block of goal bound shot,we shouldn’t sacrifice him for that instead we should encourage him to fight even more to me he is better than Lavatsa,Kiongera combined,…congrats team.

Though we didn’t play as good as we did against Thika it’s good that we won though we should have taken the opportunity to improve our goal aggregate

My Kudos to Gatusso. He has injected a hitherto missing punch snd prrsencr in the midfield. In Gor football is made anf played im the midfield.Otieno and Kariuki have shown huge potential.Blackberry is tense and is enslaved to yhe past.I wish he cud rrlax he would be our next Origi.Meanwhile iam nostalgic about Gor of Yore.I deeeply miss the flare, confidence ,pace and all else that Makes the days of Otieno Chally,Okello Zangi,Abbas Magongo,Fundi et all made Gor mahia a must budget item .
