Gor Mahia edge Chemelil

Kogalo resumed their 2011 KPL campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Chemelil at Afraha stadium. Chemelil has proven a tough nut to crack for Gor Mahia in recent years. In fact the equivalent fixture last year ended in a 0-3 loss for Gor Mahia.

On a day when virtually every other KPL match ended in a scoreless tie, Kogalo triumphed thanks to a goal by defender Collins Omondi. He rose to head home a corner kick taken by Moses Odhiambo.

Collins Omondi pictured here, scored the winner

The game was an evenly balanced affair and either team could have won had they taken their chances. Eric Masika stood tall in the Kogalo defence to stave off attacks from Chemelil. He had an excellent game. Why he is not a national team regular in a team whose defence is porous and is in desperate need for help is beyond this writer.

The game availed fans the opportunity to see the new signings such as Hajji Mwachoki, Demonde Selenga and Wycliff Ochomo, the latter two who came on as subsitutes. There were no fireworks from them however and it will take time before the new group gels into a unit.

It was welcome news for Kogalo fans who have suffered through sub par results of late in addition to the Supersport ban and the heavy fines levelled against the team. Gor Mahia are now in 5th place with 23 points.

Well done Kogallo. Soldier on!!! Let the doubting Thomas’ continue doubting. I believe we have what it takes to be crowned champs this season. Some of us are still mourning the move by Kitawi to Tusker. Gor is bigger than an individual player. All the 30 registered players are capable of delivering. Let us have faith in the boys. For God and my club – Kogallo

i was there n it was just mwaaa…,lets improve our midfield by converting the likes of Moses Odhiambo,Selenga,Kiplagat and Odera to play as both attacking and holding midfielders and Lavatsa and Ochomo as lead strikers. This will make Makori and Tony Onyango to wreck havoc on both left and right wings…,go for goals K’OGALO

Bravo! Bravo boys! I wish to congratulate the boys for keeping the k’ogalo fire alive. This was a very deserved win. Albert, welcome on board! I have found a great partner on this forum.

I also join my colleagues to welcome the new signings. I do hope they will gel with the team sooner or later. No amount of intimidation, harsh penalty can retrain us from realising our vision this season.

I wish you yet another exciting cheering season!

I was at Afraha and was happy eith the points. However our midfield was a complete let down making our defence (Masika mostly) to carry a very heavy load of incessant attacks from CSL while our strikers (Lavatsa all the time) had to go back to their own half to get the ball. Why was Akumu made to play full back (he really struggled to contain the short but fast strikers from CSL)..kwani Musa yuko wapi?

Otherwise well done to the team and Gatuso in particular for a well deserved 3 points.

Great game yesterday, the new signings brought something different. (power and strength in the case of Ochomo and Selenga and guile in the case of Haji) I thought we are a litle thin in defence maybe Pascal Ochieng of Rangers will be a welcome addition to provide cover for Musa and the “Rock of all Ages” Eric Masika. Ivan was a bit of a disappointment as he constantly neglected to pick the Chemelil attacking midfielders thereby over burdening the defence and Gatusso.

  • With teams no longer winning easily all we need is to pick up our form of last year and we will go one better than last year. For the midfield we will soon land Moses Odhiambo from Tusker (I don’t know if it was a swap with Kitawi in this case) and hopefully our issues there will be gone. With the strength from Ochomo and Selenga I hope our other strikers should now find enough room for manouvre. Congrats for last weekend’s win and let’s continue cheering the team.

I am happy with the 3 points. However Gor should easily rise above relegation candidates like Chemelil. This is like Barcelona vs Getafe or Man U versus Stoke City. How come Gor struggles to beat every team including the bottom ones. I want to see continental football. And to get there, Gor must be dispatching teams like these with relative ease. Gor has 5 or 6 national team players and Chemelil has none. We must keep pressure on the club officials to deliver results.

  • guys AFC isnt as expensive as Gor yet they have spent alot during this window. can someone tell us how many recruits we’ve made? I hoe not just the two or is it three?

@Joe Riaga, you must realise that this league is one of the most competitive. All teams are strong. You must also realise that these small teams always play extra hard when meeting Kogallo. Even stoke city hammered Man U, as well as Arsenal. For your information, this very team hit Gor 3 – 0, last season. I am therefore contented with the 1 – 0 victory. For God and my club – Kogallo

  • @Joe as @Albert puts it there is no weak team this year. Even City stars who are behind are playing as good as the top team no wonder apart from GOR nobody won over the weekend. On recruitment I think we need to do it wisely and not compete with the other team. We are not building the team from scratch but just re-enforcing the few weaknesses that existed. So far I think we are fine. Maybe a keeper and an extra strong defender would have done. The best we can do with what we have currently is to support them both morally and financially

I think gor is playing well, and their is no weak team this year, but their is still something missing in this team. Why is it that hardly ever do we score more than one goal in any match this season, we always win struglling.I think our strikers should take this challenge, they should increase their sharpness for God sake.Lavatsa is very talented infact he plays like benzema, so cool and intelligent, but he should concentrate more on scoring if he realy want to be a star, coz a striker perfomance is judged strictly on his scoring prowress.zico quickly find the winning combination.

    Reply
  • Whether teams raise their games against Gor or not, Zico must find a way of scoring more than 1 goal a game. That formula lies in midfield play. If we dont feed our strikers then they will not get many opportunities to score. Chemelil dominated us in the midfield yet we have good midfielders but they seem to be struggling, perhaps because Zico gives different instructions.

Thanks, lets hope the new signings will do well and gel quickly. Looking forward to the threesome attach of Lavatsa, Ochomo and Selenga. But where are the defenders? That department needed some revamping. Masika might burn out then we will have a big problem. When exactly is the SONY game? and AFC?

Truly we are completely handicaped in the midfield, those who travelled to afraha saw it, actually we escaped with the points, it was a case of so many strikers and defence but near zero mid..s’thing must change we’ll not be lucky in all the 17 matches. Thats the bitter truth.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks Gor Mahia must improve. Hii mambo ya 1-0, 0-0, 0-1, 0-0, 1-0 kila siku ni bure. At this rate Kogalo will never win the league. A team with better players should find a way to win consistently. Chemelil is a team full of nondescript players. They should not be giving Gor Mahia a tough time.

Joe..you saw it , if you were at Afraha you saw how we played the entire game..my question was and is we are signing strikers where are defenders..then where was Awilo when we had teddy playing defence with GM completely outplayed in the mid? Guys our game went out after selenga n Anguyo were brought in for kevo n Roy. Guys you also noticed some three awkward attacks in the box that ref ignored n chemelil were very bitter about even after the whistle..were it another big team n ref…anyway am just concerned about lifting the trophy with that kind of show! Just comments.

  • FOR US TO SCORE MORE GOALS WE NEED A CREATIVE MIDFIELD-GATTUSO& AKUMU, WITH THE OPTION OF GOOD WINGERS-SELENGE&ODHIS TO PROVIDE BALLS FOR OCHOMO AND LAVATSA.WHY IS ZEDDY PLAYING AKUMU AS A DEFENDER YET HE CAN ASSIST GATTUSO PUSH THE BALL FORWARD.ANGUYO CAN BE THE HOLDING MIDFIELDER WHILE NASIO,COLLINS,MASIKA AND MUSA WILL TIGTHEN THE DEFENCE.AWILO SHOULD JOIN THE BENCH TO MOTIVATE THE PLAYERS WHILE MOSES THE WORKHORSE ODHIAMBO SHOULD BE HANDED THE CAPTAINCY TO DRIVE GM FORWARD.TONY IS TOO WEAK FOR THIS LEAGUE.ODERA SHOULD BE INTRODUCED IN THE ECOND HALF AS HE IS GOOD IN POSITION PLAY.THEN GM WILL LIFT THE TITLE.

Ochomo and Lavatsa and Selenge is good combination because Odhis plays the same position with Selenge, so Akumu shud get out from mid and get a position at the defence with Masika since he is best there at Defence.

But do I say. K’ogallo’s green army raided Afraha and Nakuru town. All that happened and the results were a manifestation of a total fanatical commitment. All I would ask from our players is that they should convert our outbreak on pitches to real goals. I look forward to continued results at Awendo.

  • Guys..there is some confusion..can someone give me the correct line up for the match?
Please confirm if this is it: Goal – Jerry Onyango; Defence – Julius Owino, Anthony Akumu, Eric Masika, Collins Omondi; Mid – Collins Okoth, Roy Okal (Ivan (Anguyo 50th min), (Tony?); Strikers – Edwin Lavatsa (Wycliffe Ochomo 70th min), Kevin Omondi (Demonde Selenga 50th min) , Moses Odhiambo Rasta

Who started between Tony Onyango & Haji Mwachoki?
