Gor Mahia edge Rangers to go to 2nd spot

Gor Mahia on Wednesday kept alive their Tusker Premier League title hopes moving to second on the log with 49 points after cruising past relegation threatened Rangers FC with a 2-1 win courtesy of strikes from Ali Abondo and Rama Salim.

With the win, Gor Mahia moves to 49 points, two behind leaders Tusker (51) and a point above third placed AFC Leopards. All the top three teams have played 26 matches so far and with four matches to the end of the season, this proves to be a tight march to the trophy.

Moses Odhiambo fired the first warning with a good shot that was saved by Rangers custodian Omondi. Afterwards, a good buildup from Rangers in the third minute lacked a final touch after a great cross into Gor Mahia box by Ombasa.Dan Sserunkuma then made inroads into Rangers’ box and won a corner that was taken by Moses Odhiambo and ended up as a goal kick.

Gor then had two successive chances. First a corner was cleared in the 17th minute before a brilliant free kick by Ali Abondo. Keeper Omondi remained superb to keep away the danger.

Kevin Omondi came closer in the 28th minute with a free header but he missed target by inches as Gor Mahia intensified their attacks. Kevin Omondi would later pave way for Joseph “Pablo” Njuguna.

From a short corner, Ali Abondo’s shot went past the hard working Rangers’ keeper to give Gor Mahia the lead and send the green Nyayo Stadium into frenzy.

In the 42nd minute, Rama Salim almost extended Gor Mahia’s lead but his shot was well saved by the busy Omondi. In need of goals, Rangers coach Nandwa threw in striker Baldin Ngwa in place of Eric Ochieng. Two minutes to the break, Eric Muranda missed a glorious chance to level for Rangers after a blunder by Donald Mosoti almost cost Gor the lead.

Two minutes after the break, Rangers won a corner from a deflected Eric Muranda shot. Former Gor captain Julius “Awilo” Owino sent a clever chip that beat Jerim Onyango for Rangers’ equalizer.

But this score line did not last long as a brilliant combination between Sserunkuma and Rama Salim yielded Gor Mahia’s second goal in the 53rd minute.

A brilliant save by Jerim Onyango denied Eric Muranda from scoring in the 67th minute just a minute after coach nandwa had added more firepower to his attacks by bringing in Paul Odhiambo for Geoffrey Kataka.

In the 78th minute, Baldin Ngwa was brought down at the edge of the box by Ivan Anguyo to earn Rangers a free kick.Muranda’s free kick was cleared for a corner. The pressure at Gor Mahia ended when Ombasa was ruled offside.

Logarusic’s last dice was by bringing in Nicholas Auma for Rama Salim with five minutes remaining to the end of the match.

Tough is what I can say and Mwakio is very right to thank the almighty. As the coach says a wounded animal is always very dangerous and sure Rangers was with their great wing attacks.Congrats Rangers but at least now you know people, you know who’s bigger.

I am thinking that barring anything extraordinary, the Kogalo/Tusker game may just be the decider this season, it is going to be a big match and can someone negotiate to have it played on a weekend and during the day? Just thinking.

The win was sweet but not without its tense moment. I am worried that we are a 45min team and second half seem to be life in hell. This could be our undoing Loga, Pls address this issue or Kill the game in the first 45min by scoring more than two goals.
    Great game, great win

I want to appeal to my fellow Kogalo supporters to help us stop invading the pitch after the match in the name of celebration. Remember our players need to have their warm ups or warm down, whatever it is after the match to relax their muscles as they go home. This warm up is very vital for the boys. This is the time supersport awards the best player of the match and also talks to the coaches. We need also to remember that security is very paramount. A number of people who jump into the pitch may not be on FB but I believe we know them. Let us not wait for security personnel to take action but it calls for responsibility. Let us avoid as much as possible these loop holes for thugs to thrive.

I will start by congratulating K’ogalo for registering another impressive win against Rangers yesterday evening. The two goal scorers, Abondo and Salim for rising to the ocassion. My hat off also to Rangers for putting up a spirited fight throughout the game.

Coach Logarusic and indeed the entire technical bench deserve a pat on their shoulders for their meticulous preparation for the final onslaught on Rangers last evening.

Finally but by no means least, I salute Jerrim for standing tall behind the goals despite still mourning the passing on of his sister. Glory be to God for giving goalie the fortitude to play under the circumstance. The green army for walking with the team every step of the way.

poor and uncordinated lay in the second half. with this kind of play, don’t be surprised if we get a thorough beating from African giants if by any chance we make it to CAF Champions League or even in the confederation cup. two strong central midfielders are all we need.

Good cash for rangers though, 1.07m is quite a lot having in mind that they have no fans!

I hear from reliable sources that tuzo deal is coming to an end and therefore the coach wants to leave because without tuzo deal, gor mahia will be a very very very broke club…………..please please what is the management doing about sponsorship for the next season….!

    Reply
  • Mèsh Oketch

Lets 1st concentrate on the league, then sponsorship later..i guarantee u,if we win Tpl,sponsors will come, mark my words

@ # 28 Mesh: Kogalo must always plan ahead. It takes time to negotiate for sponsorship. Therefore the time to start talking to sponsors is now. Let the players do their thing on the pitch but officials must also plan ahead and be proactive. Dont get caught with the new season starting and Kogalo have no sponsor and no coach.

With better planning, we would have won the league easily this year.

We are doing good. However, there are too many blunders by Musoti. Why were we playing with only two mid fielders therefore allowing Rangers pin us in our own half?
