Gor Mahia go down to USM Alger 4-1
Gor Mahia’s hopes of reaching the champions league group stage were severely dented on Sunday when they lost 4-1 to USM Alger in Blida
Additional Reporting from the Nation
Gor Mahia suffered a 4-1 defeat in the hands of Algerian side USM Alger in a first round Caf Champions League match at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Bilda on Sunday night.
Mohamed Rabie scored the opener in the 16th minute, sending in a volley from inside the box after a good cross from Muaid Ellafi on the left flank.
Rabie doubled his side’s lead in the 45th minute from the spot after Gor Mahia custodian David Mapigano was adjudged to have fouled him in the box.
Algeria Under 23 International Zakaria Benchaa made it 3-0 with brilliant curler into the corner as the game went to the breather with the Algerian champions firmly in control.
Play was stopped for a minute after Gor Mahia striker Nicholas Kipkirui was elbowed by Hamza Kudri in the 47th minute and had to be attended to my medics. Kenneth Muguna took the resultant freekick but USM keeper Ismael Mansour easily picked it. Samuel Onyango came in for the injured Kipkirui a few minutes later.
K’Ogalo pulled one back in the 55th minute, captain Muguna sending Mansouri the wrong way after Charles Momanyi’s goal-bound shot was handled in the box.
Zakaria Benchaa grabbed his second in the 75th minute to make it 4-1, reacting fast to tap in a rebound from the edge of the box after a freekick had beaten Mapigano but bounced off the post.
USM Alger’s big win at home means they carry a huge advantage to Nairobi when the two teams meet for the return leg in Kasarani on September 29 with the aggregate winner entering the group stage of the competition.
Gor Mahia line-up
David Mapigano (GK), Wellington Ochieng, Geoffrey Ochieng, Charles Momanyi, Joash Onyango, Tobias Otieno, Lawrence Juma, Kenneth Muguna (C), Bonface Omondi, Dickson Ambundo, Nicholas Kipkirui
Makosa moja kila mwaka. Miaka nenda, miaka rudi. Same mistake. Nimavaa helmet. The same mistake. Even kesho.
If only we had 5 Jasegos
From the game we played in the second half USM will be in trouble. The speed was high and we really pressed for a goal. I can still see Gor going through. If only we had Philemon and Batambuze our flanks would be more secure but both Ochiengs will still deliver .
Now we need to come back home and strategize for the next leg. Keeper needs to be more alert. I saw the Tusker blunders again during this game, though he also made some critcal saves
I have issues with this goal keeper. Three goals thanks to the Goal keeper
Having watched the recorded match twice and keeping emotions aside I feel that Mapigano made one mistake;goal no 3.On the team there has been tremendous improvement in play. From Pollack we see pressing and neat passes sometimes even up to six completed. We need to add Yikpei up front hoping he’s good on the go;the least achievement;Confed finals
its a typical north african scoreline – every year same results, aint nothing changed with our mentality. we can do 2-0 in Nairobi return leg but i doubt if we can pull a 3-0 miracle !
I remember the burundi coach saying we have two weaknesses – i think he meant the right back and the left back positions and today it clearly showed. My suggestion to the coach is to play wellington on the left back position and try joachim in the right back position.Geoffrey ochieng is always overwhelmed in big matches
Kogalo! What happened?
What do you expect. Tulicheza tukiwa na njaa…..I only ate nuts and a coke
I mean, how can a Gor Player eat just njugu na coke before such a game jameni
Honestly Mapigano must improve….3 costly errors … let’s not hide behind financial woes….in 2015 the club was so broke but we finished the season unbeaten…usm algeirs are beatable let’s keep the faith
Johny I like your attitude. That is the spirit. We must believe to the last whistle. I feared you would surface in the blog with “I told you”!
The truth is Fredrick odhiambo is the most reliable keeper in gor mahia he’s only being crucified for being short… Mapigano us Bonnie’s down grade
It will be done in the second round let’s not loose hope we can do the three I believe the head coach saw areas of weakness which he’ll seriously work on. Welcome home team kubwa
What were we to expect from that match? with same preparation year in,year out yet the management was given the fixture long time ago and that’s why they went ahead and register players with CAF.To my analysis, the playing unit did well despite the common horrendous preparation. Remember The KCC of Uganda fought well in Angola yet they are not Gor mahia’s equal, don’t forget Bandari did well here in Kenya.Am not afraid to say that all the club poor result is instigated by the management, and time is ripe for new leadership in the club,if you look at all clubs in Afrika, their leaders are trying to modernized the club and be part and parcel with the fans. However, as much as fans are not ready to be enlisted tell a lot
What is your source of information that “fans are not ready to be enlisted”?
The players tried very much especially the second half but they let down by this Mapigano guy
I know we will get heaps of messages castigaring the team just because we lost. I watched the whole game and i can say the defensive wings were porous. At some rime our mid was dpung such good work when it was 3-1 and the opponents were rediced to normal. With the altitude of Nairobi and the right attitude we will beat USM 5-1.
Pessimists please give the team time to strategize and we talk after the second let. Of course positive criticism is allowed but remember that every year Gor improves from the previous year’s performance
Dan I signed out at 50 minutes, but my prayer was for an away goal. Now that we got it, all shall be well. I join JTGJ in asking why our “continental material” toothless GK is not being given a chance. This was his game and with him on duty, the scorelines would have been 1-1 or 2-1.
Just watched the clip. Gor player what you say we don’t know about. On the pitch I will take it out on the full backs, it’s clear now we ar going to struggle in big games with the Ochiengs. Batambuze needs to come back on the left and someone else on the right.
As for goalkeeping, where is Frederick Odhiambo? How is it that he is not even number two after performing so well last season? This Mapigano does not convince me with his timing and Bonny for now is a no, no, no for me in these big games.
@Ja thur gi ji, our keeper made some costly mistakes but in the same breathe he really made some daring saves, else the score line would have gotten to 5 or 6. He will come better than all our current keepers if given time. I believe the other keepers will get their chance this coming weekend. Our two Ochiengs still have lots to do but all shall be well. I am praying this time do do CAFCL group stage as the CAFCC is no longer inspiring. Will the yellow cards to Wellington, Ambundo amd Geoffrey affect us in the next match?
We will beat USM at home, but it is the scoreline that will determine whether we proceed to group stages or fall back to CCC. It is a blunder that the back four didn’t strike a working balance with the midfield.
If USM will play an open game then we have a chance but if they park bus then we will be out.
Mapigano will give us more heart attacks as days go by. This you can take to the bank unless the coach is bold enough to bench him. I am not saying this because we lost but all those who frequent this blog should remember my thoughts about him when he signed. Despite solid performances, my doubts about him will remain until he proves me wrong and he hasn’t. And Peter Odhiambo must be one of the most unlucky people I know. Whenever fielded, he always delivers but sooner or later always returns to third choice and this happens under different coaches so we cannot say coach A or B is against him. That is why I put it o bad luck or maybe somebody has ‘tied’ him?
e-registration is the way forward for enlisting members. I know of Gor Mahia die heard supporters in areas like Isiolo, Marsabit and in USA, how are they to register using manual system? e-registration is the answer. There has been a lot of suggestions on how to raise funds in this forum which I wont repeat, but the solution is financial stability. These last minute begging for air tickets does not even augur well for players psychologically.
Congrats team, I want to believe you gave it your level best under the prevailing circumstances. No miracle was going to happen, I wish you well in the return leg.
I wish GM the best in the return leg but I said this and must repeat it.
Playing a continental away game is not walking down the aisle or a pastor going to church on Sunday whereby just showing up is enough. Players must be rested, well fed and focused etc. It’s unfair to expect players to deliver with such disorganisation.
I appreciate the tickets but why avail them at the last minute. EC now knows that fans, Sonkos etc are tired of these eleventh hour appeals. They don’t benefit the TB/players.
Gor disoriented officials and imposters goes down 4-1 to USM
You cannot put player through these extreme conditions and expect good result. It is clear reflection of poor management
I support you on this. I thought KILO was dislodged as an official, what and why does he still hike on international trips???
I am disappointed BUT am not annoyed , and am still hopeful because situations like these have been there before .
My favorite team in Europe , Liverpool were clobbered mercilessly and left for dead in last season’s Uefa Cl semi finals by Barcelona -3 goal to Zero , but come the second leg , turned the tide around and walloped Barcelona mercilessly 4-0 .
And this is to the Gor Mahia fraternity , despite the heavy defeat in Barcelona , the Liverpool fanbase didnt throw their arms in the air and dump the team , instead they filled the stadium to the rafters to play their part and push the team to the furthest point humanly possible and the rest is history .
Lets all turn out in our numbers and play our part and pray that the players do their part , now is not the time to go to war on what should have been because it has already happened , Lets focus on what can be and my example about Liverpool is proof that we can do it , We will have enough time to vent after that .
Very encouraging. Instead of getting stuck to , ooh the EC is disoganised, ooh the keeper is this and that, oooh the defence etc etc let’s strategize as a team, fans to fill the stadium (and pay for the entrance) and i am sure we will make it. Whoever watched the livestream will attest to the fact that at some point the real Kogallo silenced the crowd woth attack aftet attack though the finishing was blunt
We leave to fight another day. God bless K’ogalo
Now let us be realistic the team arrived a day before the match.
The uncertainty surrounding the trip did not do the players any good in terms of mental preparation.
Also do not forget that DUBIOUS PENALTY award.
Let’s keep faith with this team.
Gor Mahia are capable of replicating the Aigle Noir result in Nairobi.
We are in a tight situation but there is hope. We just need to apply the pressure which the team displayed in the second half and USMA will wilt.
Let’s STAND BY GOR MAHIA in this hour of need. Forget about blame game, blaming whatever source will not change the predicament we’re in.
But remaining united, and focused on the job ahead, maintain POSITIVE attitude, Belief in the players’ capabilities, mammoth support of Gor Mahia from the first whistle to the last whistle and by GOD’S GRACE Gor Mahia will sail through.
Yes indeed..we stand by ours and we know they are capable of overturning the results by Gods grace. Lets keep the faith andvurge them on cheering n praying. Congrats for the 2nd half performance team.We shall overcome.
remeber we have a stadium to fill match aganist chemil then the return leg of usm, let’s not complain to much us you can see our capy is leading by poistive example why not us ## pamoja let’s make the stadium green# i hope each player given a chance will have to prove himself as we drive the solgan jaza stadi
We thank God First for the players reached Algeria safely and did what they can and that is the result. We know God is still with them they saw the mistakes that led to their defeat and we hope the Coach, His assistant, the technical bench will rectify the mistakes.
And we hope here at home things will be ok we still have hope that, this one was just first half.
We know the second half will be ours let as many fans as possible come and support the team welcome home team we know what you can do in good state of mind we are praying for you and we hope all will be well feel encouraged we know God will give you energy to do un expected.
I watched the match from start to finish.I also noticed some mistakes which the coach should know.
The coach employed attack formation which was not good since we were playing away and the opponent’s punish us for that.
Second, this goalkeeper mapigano is overrated and we better have our proven shot stopper back. If you look back, last time he kept a clean sheet was in Bujumbura and since then, the rate at which he is conceding is increasing exponentially. When that club from Burundi came,he conceded one goal. Against tusker, two goals, against USM Alger four goals. And all the goals were due to his incompetence. Frederic Odhiambo is the best and if the coach can’t change his mind to give him back his number, then even CCC,we won’t go through.
The last observation is the issue of preparation, I don’t think that we had a bad preparation, and what other people are saying are not true. The major problem was goal keeping and if we had even boni, we would have not conceded a lot of goals.
@ jasego,if you will not convince the coach to bring back our goalkeeper Frederic Odhiambo, then, he should forget even the league title.
Why don’t we encourage the boys by sending at least 300 each to the paybill…the fans always blame the E.C but we are all a late down…most of us don’t even come to watch matches..we don’t attend harambees…all we do is complain every day…please let’s feel the stadia on the return leg everything is possible…
Lastly Aduda is a scam is all of his signings are below par…the 5 foreigners are so poor Ambudo has skill but no stamina neither energy… Mapigano is Bonnie’s down grade…those Western African Ninja’s we don’t know where they are… my last question why should any sane person sign 3 injured players… madnesses galore
Melatonin is a hormone that divides our day into day and night. It is the hormone that controls our 24-hour biological clock so that at one time we feel we should sleep and another time we feel we should wake up.
The hormone is secreted by the pineal gland which is located in the brain. The gland itself is the size of an orange fruit seed. This size means that the hormone is secreted in minute amounts. However, the hormone is so potent that it is able determine whether we stay awake or fall asleep.
The secretion of the hormone is inhibited by light and this is the reason why it’s secretion begins at 6 p.m. and reaches its peak at midnight. When our boys are playing at 10.45 p.m. in Algeria, the concentration of this hormone in their body would be at it’s highest considering that their body is still operating on the Kenyan time which is ahead of Algeria by some 3 hours. It is on this physiological viewpoint that I want to say without fear of contradiction that the current Got Mahia squad is good and will definitely go past USMA 5-0 in Nairobi. In Alegeria, they played half awake, but still managed to score an away goal and come back with a manageable scoreline.
It’s not a blame game of “Ooh EC” but rather a question of being organized and proactive. E.g EC and everybody knows that after USM return leg we will need air tickets be it for the CL group stages or the CCC qualification knockout.
It is only the gov’t that has lately provided the team with airtickets so EC place the request for air tickets NOW or start begging akina Sonko/Raila NOW. EC already knows it needs approx. kes. 5m per away match.
Next ensure that all players’ allowances are cleared for it can’t be that year in, year out, last CAF away match, this CAF away match and next CAF away match you are disorganized ati mara Harambee where the chief guest is a no show, ati it’s 1am and I only have 8 tickets etc, etc.
During elections some claim that they will even build a stadium, that they will build apartments for players and so on and so forth. Since you present yourself for election of your own free will now spare us the lame excuses and do the job you wanted.
Very true…. that’s why I feel rachier is like Biblical Moses but right now we need Joshua…mean while let’s also play our part…
@Oduor12 this blog has been infiltrated by official and “officials” who want bloggers to validate their ineptness and massage their egos. Some of the bloggers have been reduced to consumers of these “officials” messages and they shower them with praise and congratulations without questioning why we ended up here under their watch. They managed to “we knock the right doors”. We expected that anyway. Mr. “Officials” Leave this blog to critics. Call them fans. Do not silence them. These are the people you need “to work hard for the club” from the terrace after you have “knocked the right doors” to cheer the team to success. But please remember this is no sustainable. Our begging bowl as fans is for you get organized before hand with your “begging bowl” and avoid last minute rush. Start begging now. We will come and support the club in the return leg and contribute at the gate. Kanyo ema waromogo
@oduor 12, where is the money….do we even know if the players took their meals before the algiers game ? Do we know if they have been held behind pending clearing of hotel bills ? where is the money to plan for even hosting the return leg in Nairobi ? Do we even know if salaries for august will be paid ?
I repeat !! ‘fans’ are the biggest let down….we demand but we don’t want to give, we ask but we don’t want to be asked , we complain but we don’t want to stick to our lanes and now we demand results in return leg and we don’t want to be held accountable….so to the so called ‘fans’ please just keep off ! The team will perform based on the resources available and let no one rip where they have not bothered to sow.
Barefoot bandit you are funny we the fans watched it from 10.45pm but the players played from 8.45pm in their time zone
My good friend Moses, read my post again: For the Algerians, their body systems were operating at 8.45 p.m., but for our boys, their bodies were operating on Kenyan time, a time when the circulating levels of melatonin are at its peak in Kenya. The short time they had was not enough for their diurnal rhythm to readjust to the Algerian environment.
The moment we lose a game our true characters come out. @Jakoyo, you seem to have changed from that perennial critic to someone who now sees things for what they are. You are right since some of us in this blog even said that they cannot even contribute a single cent to the team BUT are now wailing because of the loss. By the way does this team belong to the EC or is it ours as fans?
How is all these going to help the EC and the team perform even better?
Even the worst of the business ideas needs a marketing strategy and the strategy ought to be persuasive.
Those who stated in this forum that they were not going to contribute even a single cent do not deserve to comment on the results. Whether good or bad, they should keep to themselves. They can’t harvest where they never sowed.
While I thank the government for helping, unfortunately the help came late. The players never had time to acclimatise in Algeria. Algeria is a desert with very high temperatures.
True, the government’s help was withheld until late, but as per Oduor12, why didn’t we start following the required procedures with the government early? It is also true that Algeria is a desert and therefore very hot, but only during the day. Like all deserts, the place is freezing cold at nightfall. Colder than Kisii; colder than Timboroa.
The boys tried to their ability; with fatigue and travel jet lag a defeat was a possibility. Now on the 29th let’s have a perfect revenge game match up and hammer them well. Gor seem to be always unfortunate with travel issues especially while travelling to Northern African countries; very unfortunate indeed
The mistake was that, instead of requesting for assistance from the Sports fund, the EC wrote to get assistance from the Ministry. A matter of following wrong procedures. In the government, procedures are taken very seriously. Failure to follow procedures has made many people loose their jobs.
There is a time for everything. This happens to be for eating humble pie. They say a bad cook also has a portion of his tasteless food. The EC, club members and fans all did the sorry cooking. So lets eat our portions and down it with humble pie. Football is life itself. Full of ups and downs. Thrills and disappointments. And nothing comes easy. So we got to be strong, smart and serious with what we do, to be able to triump or succeed. Its a pity sitting there hoping stones will turn to bread allover sudden. Sports scribes busk with glee with words like beaten, whipped, walloped, dazzled, pipped or raped. Anyway lets stop the blame game and focus on the next 90 minutes. I salute the chairman for all the sacrifice and selflesness to make sure the team honoured the fixture. I salute the patron, @jasego, fans and the players for their efforts. The idea of e-registration is ok. Many people would feel to be part and parcel of the club hence obligated to send their contributions as club members than as just fans.
Let us fill the stadium during the return leg and cheer our boys. That away goal may save us. With proper preparation , 3-0 at home is possible. The right and left back looked a bit porous. Unfortunately it seems we are short of versatile, utility players in the current squad. I hope the Coach will sort it out. Arabs are very good at the wings and they need good no 2 and 3 to counter them. We must not allow them to score any goal at Kasarani. All the best team kubwa.
