Gor Mahia have named 18 players for the CAF Cup first leg match against Mozambican side Ferroviario de Maputo away.

Gor coach Anaba Awono said those in the final squad of 18 players are the best at the moment for the second most prestigious club competition duty. The Cameroonian-born tactician said he had based his selection criteria on individual’s performance in training, out-put and experience. “I have selected the best players for this match out of the 30 we have available and I am confident they will do a good job,” said Awono.

He allayed Injury fears for Hugo Nzoka, Rama Salim and Baldwin Ngwa and confirmed that the trio will be part of K’Ogallo’s squad for Saturday’s match. “The players had slight injuries picked up in our last two matches but they are now ready for the match against Ferraviaro if their recent performance in training is anything to go by,” explained Awono.

Summer signings Donald Mosoti, Ibrahim Kitawi, Peter Juma, Wycliffe Kasaya, George Midenyo and Tony Nyang’or were omitted from the squad as they are yet to gel well into the side. However, Awono revealed that they will have their chance when the second leg comes up in two weeks time.

The team had breakfast with the Prime Minister yesterday and also received a cash boost from the chairman of the Harambee Stars Management Board Evans Kidero.

Final squad: Goalkeepers: Frederick Onyango, Philip Ivo Mapunda; Defenders: David Owino, Musa Mohammed, Christopher Wekesa, Yusuf Juma, Ivan Anguyo; Midfielders: Anthony Akumu, Collins Okoth, Moses Otieno, Victor Ali Abondo, Rama Salim, Kevin Ochieng and Moses Odhiambo; Strikers: Hugo Nzoka, Baldwin Ngwa, John Kiplangat, Duncan Makori.

This is a good squad and players have to be motivated by fans, corporate institutions and wellwishers. Where is Tuzo with some incentives as Gor will be marketing Tuzo in Maputo?

Tuzo please do something for your partner!

Ibrahim Kitawi is our secret weapon against Ferroviaro. Remember Oliver Biehoff of West Germany in Euro 96 final against Czech Republic?

As i type away this comment, our Maputo bound squad, according to Radio Jambo have landed safely. It has taken us a few more years to bounce back on the continental stage. We now have a golden chance prove all our critics wrong starting from the Saturday clash.

We shall bank our hopes on the 18 man squad aboved named by the coach. It is true we’ve picked many injuries but that should not be an excuse for poor results at Maputo. The boys went to Maputo with their spirits high thanks to the kind gesture from E.Kidero, the MD of Mumias Sugar and the Right Honorable Prime Minister, RAO. I cannot also forget to mention a wellwisher ( am sorry, I can’t remember his name) from Embakasi who donated Ksh 50000 to the team.

I urge the green army to cross their fingers wherever they are for the team. I would like also like to request our fans to turn up at JKIA, no matter the results, and give our boys a hereos welcome, the same way The Elephants of Ivory Coast after the just concluded Orange AFCON bonanza. Safe journey back home.
