Gor Mahia now hitting on multiple cylinders

Gor Mahia have been in sensational form over the past few weeks. Not only have they recorded impressive wins over Thika United, Chemelil and Mathare United, but the team play has been impressive.  In the first leg of the league, it was clear that it was the defence and goalkeeping that was carrying the team. In the past few games however,  different players have stepped up to carry the mantle in each game.

Against Mathare United, it was new find Joseph Wanyonyi whose outstanding play saw him earn MVP honours.  “This was just his first start. I am impressed with his work rate, he is definitely going to be a great player if he maintains his discipline and focus,” said Williamson.

Prior to that, Wanyonyi had entered the Chemelil game as a substitute. Some fans questioned the rationale of replacing the veteran Moses Odhiambo with an inexperienced player. But he impressed in the manner in which he deftly lost his markers especially Charles Odero who will be seeing Wanyonyi in his nightmares for a long time. And his pinpoint crosses are reminiscent of the legendary Sammy Onyango Jogoo.

Wanyonyi, attanded Kamusinde High School  and learned his craft at Aspire Academy in Qatar. He  was ecstatic after being named the MVP in the closely contested match at the Nyayo National Stadium.“I am happy to have been given a chance to start and to win the man of the match award. I want to work harder to cement my position in this team,” he said in a post match interview.

The young lad has brilliant future and hopefully Kogalo can hold onto him and prevent you know who from poaching him.

Sserunkuma

The burly Ugandan striker appeared to have lost his place in the starting line-up during the first leg as coach Loga preferred Kiongera, Rama and Lavatsa. At one point he appeared to be destined for Armenia. But Kogalo fans must  be thanking  their creator that Sserunkuma stayed to help bolster the club’s league campaign. He has been in sensational form of late, wreaking all kinds of havoc against opposing defences. Againt Chemelil, it was his defence splitting pass that found Kevin Omondi and resulted in the penalty that won the game for Kogalo. Passing is perhaps one of Sserunkuma’s least noticed but most useful skills.

The Youth Brigade

One good aspect of coach Williamson is his willingness to thrust youngstars into the game. This is unlike Loga who was risk averse. Aside from Wanyonyi we have also seen Angelo Okumu and Eric Ochieng play prominent roles. And Williamson is clearly brilliant at inspiring young players and bringing the best out of them. In this regard, he is reminiscent of the legendary Len Julians.

Others.

Oboya when healthy has proven to be a brilliant attacker. His silken skills and string runs from deep are the bane of many a KPL defender.Kevin Omondi too has impressed with his brilliant play especially against Chemelil last weekend.

Joseph Njuguna has proven useful when Anthony Akumu is blowing cold. Emuge in central defence is still an immovable rock as is Owino “Calabar”, Mosoti and Jerry “Jagoal”.

The league is still far from over. Any #hashtag# expressions expressing over-confidence should be set aside for now. Coach Williamson himself has noted that the road ahead is still treacherous. “We still have a long way. It is not yet won, but I am happy with today’s display,” he said.

Gor Mahia will next take on Thika United at Kasarani on October 16. Fans must show up in large numbers to support the team in voice and in kind.

GM has improved but still has a long way 2 go.
Let’s remember that this M.U is no.13th on the log so what was the bloated EC(must b the Faiz/Bwana wing) thinking offering Okumbi the position of Head Coach. Though I don’t agree with Sir.Bob’s open attack on Mosoti I also don’t think he should be discredited having held GM together when Loga was AWOL on several occassions.
Without taking anything away from the team our 2 goals were largely due 2 goalkeeping errors which almost cost us at our end.

Jagoal has a problem going 4 high incoming corners.
Apparently the best thing the happened 2 GM was Okumbi turning down the offer since we would now be in the bottom half. Btw was he going 2 b paid above 500K & he still let it go or were the usual strings “attached” by the wheeler dealers making the offer unattractive.
I agree with JBO individuals skills & work ethic of most players need to improve if we’re bcom a force in CECAFA/CAF remember he’s been there & done it “papers” or no “papers”.

We need high achievers like JBO in GM. As of now the likes of Okumbi can only b assistant 2 JBO but I still encourage “the 6 million $ man” 2 get those “papers” as it will only improve him more.
    As usual;
    1. Lets revamp our structures esp. membership. Even ODM,URP are publishing their accounts & have assets of 14m.What has GM 2 show since 1968!
    2. COME ELECTIONS AVOID UNKNOWNS, GIVE QUALIFIED LEGENDS A TRY LIKE OBWAKA,LULE,SIANGA,MAKAMU BUT IN A LEAN EC WITH A CEO&FIN MGR

JBO’s outbursts can only be described as very unfortunate. I dont think that was the right forum for such utterances. This players are human, they also get embarassed. I dont think that a reasonable coach would want to interfere with player confidence at such a crucial time.
@oduor 12, are you agor legend? please come out and tell us your interest..
Personally i think that what gor needs are good structures that would fit any qualified individual legends included. We must not rely on a persons goodwill to run these offices. Talk of building strong instituitions and gor must not be an exception here.
About the teams improved perfomance, …… i think its great and they should never loose focus no matter what.
    Thanks guys and be blessed.

  • No strong feelings but JBO is a real legend please leave him out of you vendetta he was the six million dollar man back in the day and its for real and their contribution back then still counts today imagine even after 18 years without a major trophy Kogalo is ranked no. 40 in Africa the highest ranking for any team in East Africa.

@Paw Akuche the fact that JBO was great is not in question. That one no one doubts. In one of the posts by Jathur gi ji and you will realise why ‘Teargas’ must have left. Open criticism of players. I hope Mosoti will not feel betrayed after giving his all. I know he plays hard and at times ‘rough’ but the fact that he gets fewer cautions means that he mostly plays by the rules. We can also see that he has a temper and this could be attributed to his place of origin but that is something the two Bobbys can manage through counselling and providing the fatherly advice.
All the same let’s give full attention to the battle ahead instead of being distracted by these side shows

Players r human bt also professionals.Well paid(cld b better if nt 4 lack of structures) @ GM & should “think & run” at the same time. JBO’s statement should b understood in this context however badly he put it, he’s ALSO HUMAN.
No am no legend bt yawa “if only wishes were horses…..”
We all agree that the most important thing is STRUCTURES,STRUCTURES & STRUCTURES.
But structures nid people 2 implement them. All am saying is that since 1968 we’ve our structures have been ,sorry 2 say, PATHETIC.

This is 2 avoid the impending AMBUSH BY EC/UNKNOWNS. My wish is that the following offer themselves coz besides their solid football foundations:
1.Obwaka is a successful private medical practitoner which means he has the business/organizational skills
2.Lule is a university lecturer, was in the team that harmonized the current football system.

@ODUOR12 while I agree with you that we will need a leaner and progressive EC I think what we need even more is diversity in the future EC composition. As it is most of the EC don’t bring anything unique in terms of ideas in running the club. We should never forget the commercial aspect of the team. Who will turn the or brand into a multi-million business by getting the sponsors on board as well as establishing a lucrative merchandise business for GM. Small things like keyholders, car stckers , pens etc will provide visibility to Gor. The current EC has failed on that as well as the names floated for the future. The person to do this does not even have to have played soccer. There are many enterpreneurs out there waiting for a stable environment to step in. How about a youth rep and gender-balanced representation? Those are just some of the ideas to have a diversified EC and the challenge is to make it leaner so that we don’t have one acting as a spokesman and treasurer and security expert in the team.
Before we float the names we need to identify what postions need to be in the EC e.g. Adminn, finance, marketing, Public Relations, commercial, football director. No need for assistants as the other EC members can act when the other is not in. That’s what I feel should work but this being a creative blog am sure other ideas can build on this

  • @Oduor12 et @Dan Original(in reaction): if u are serious about mechandising gor brand then first start by discarding the fake ‘adidas’ shirt incase u have them. this is not a product sold by gor but by some few unscrupulous individuals making name in the name of gor and adidas. it is my belief this just like the ticket saga is done with the silent blessings of gor officials. if not then the average gor fan is simply to corrupt to comprehend what the word means.
@Oduor: you have relentlessly campaigned for some guys here, what is their stand. i am yet to hear one of these guys comment on the fake brand. who is behind it and to make it worse , why is the so called patriotic gor fan buying this fake item. this just tells you how ‘partriotic’ gor fans are. many will quickly point out that they are ready to donate this or that but with the same breath complain how the legia (or whatever brand gor is selling officially) is expensive. fans boast how they can go to mombasa to watch gor but readily wear a fake brand to the stadium. so fans shud stop complaining about official corruption when they are no different than the ones they want replaced. now wether you wear the fake adidas shirt i sincerely do not know and i sincerely hope you do not… if you(any gor fan) do not then congrats, i will listen but if in any case u do wear a fake adidas product in the name of gor fan then i do not think u will have any business ‘fighting’ corruption.
NB: this messg is not necessarily addressed to you. start with the man in the mirror. kenyans cry that they want to end corruption but when elections come they quickly replace the corrupt guys with even hungrier corrupt ones. so the ppl you want in office will quickly be given the same deal with the same adidas shirt guys… why? coz they themselves wear them. these shirts are sold right where the tickets are sold. so when these officials, you want elected, say they will arrest ppl selling fake gor brands, who do they mean?

Le Pastre’s posts on Sir Bobby’s comments have been quite objective and well measured and I know he knows Sir Bobby well in terms of his status in Gor Mahia. That is why he has not been as daring to make the most outrageous suggestion by some Johnny-come-lately that Sir Bobby should step aside. Step aside to where? Before we make such calls perhaps we should weigh Sir Bobby’s contribution to Gor Mahia then and now against the alleged ills he has committed. Rateng’ wuod Ogolla is just as passionate as any other fan about K’Ogalo and he is human too. I am sure that wherever he is right now he must have realized the folly of his comment and has done the needful about it.

Honestly i see nothing wrong at all with JBO’s comments unless we are obsessed with some players and things about them. To me the current wing backs are better leaving the centre backs with acres to cover in improving their game, i said a similar thing last season just before the then seemingly good anguyo was still at the defence. It was to be learnt @ cairo the need to focus on more than just height of defenders. At GM people normally swing depending on who is on form in the day. To me JBO’s comments are coming too late and if anything the TB may appropriately consider overhauling the central defence if GM is to make the smallest mark in Cecafa @ Africa, huko hakuna kuogopwa na refs.

@Oduor12, i now understand you and i think your intention is not bad. But how do we ensure that there is lean office, that there is a vetting body for these qualified individuals and that there is a commercial wing of the club that is properly managed.
The only document that will provide us with all these and bring order is the clubs constituition.
How did we end up with a bloated office? What does the current constituition say about the composition EC ?
All am saying is that our starting point must be the constituition and if the current one is not serving us well then it should be amended. And i believe that this is the right avenue to address most of our problems.
About our playing unit, TUZIDI KUWAPATIA MORALE, they are doing a good job.

If am not wrong the constitution was amended & EC expanded under AR’s tenure. May b intention was noble i.e 2 have an expanded committee hence a larger pool of ideas/resources. We now know it backfired. GM operates under the Societies Act whose loopholes favour the incumbents e.g amorphous/instant cheap membership that is easy 2 manipulate & win an election. Thats why the 2 steps necessary r:
    1. CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION 2 REDUCE OFFICE SIZE & MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE.
    2. VOTE IN QUALIFIED OFFICIALS.

With the anticipated ambush by current EC(coz only they know the election date&rules) & influence of “bought” members/hooligans its better 4 GM fraternity 2 decide well IN ADVANCE who they will elect.
If we can zero in on gud pple who appeal 2 the entire GM fraternity then we might just put Gor on the right path otherwise RISK ELECTING UNKNOWNS WHO U CAN AVOID.
With this lean EC lets have a fulltime secretariat of a CEO,FIN & ADMIN MGR 2 ADRESS THE DAY 2 DAY CONCERNS Of @dinga & Dan.O.

While our prayer to God was that we win the league I can see God blessing us by giving us the double. As Kalixtos puts it the gods have conspired to reward us with the title by putting all manner of obstacles on the path of the other teams. While we are considered to be remaining with tough opponents the minoows are upsetting the title-pretenders. God willing we will win this title with three matches to spare. And that will mean a guard of hour for the Green Army (kdf) by KDF during the last game at Nakuru.
All the same for this to happen let our players and everybody Gor have their feet on the ground and play the next three matches like a final. Since Sofa and other teams will still lose some points it means the number of points we need to have unassailable lead will reduce further making our job even easier.

Tusker has lost it and will be further sunk by Mathare, KCB,Sony and Wstima; Sofapaka was sweetly checked by who? Karuturi and they will be further denied by Chemelil and Wstima and when we take a point from them that will be it; Ingwe(they stole from KCB) will be done by Stima,Sony and Bandari. Do I need to talk about the flower girls namely Thika, KCB and Ulinzi? On our part we just need to hammer Thika and Homeboys properly, beat or draw with Sofa and we are home and dry.

What about the Sony match, where is Mr Oguda, Nyamweya? Unless it is a secret weapon against Kogalo, by now a decision should have been made and made public.

@Oswozo God does not conspire. It’s the gods that conspire. From what I have observed without any hint of chest thumping we are in a better position to win this league. All we need is to play all matches like a final game. As much as we have ‘tougher’ games on paper the advantage is that these teams are also in contention for something higher. Our toughest game could literally be the one against HomeBoyz. Without prejudice let’s start believing that we can and work towards it. I like BW since unlike other coaches he has his feet on the ground and expectations well-managed. He has suffered the indignity of failing at the last minute in a soccer match and this is what I believe he has incalculated in the minds of the players.

That each of the remaining teams will lose points is given. That each of the captioned teams will equally have tough fixtures as Gor is true.

Looking at the points garnered and the remaining fixtures; assuming all the teams win their remaining fixtures, I submit as follows the maximum possible points:

    1.Gor-65,
    2. Sofapaka-57,
    3. (KCB,AFC leopards,Tusker,Ulinzi stars)-53.

Remembering the tyranny of numbers and looking at the remaining fixtures for all the contenders, your guess is as good as mine. You decide if Gor is winning the league or not.
