Gor Mahia take on Western Stima next

Above: Flashback to last years heroics by Ivo Mapunda

After beating Shabana FC and Thika United in the opening rounds of the GolTV shield, Gor Mahia next take on Westerm Stima in the quarter-finals. The match will take place at City Stadium on Saturday October 12 at 4:30 pm.

The other quarter finals pit AFC Leopards against Karuturi Sports, Sofapaka against Finlays and SoNy Sugar against Mathare.

Gor Mahia will be keen to defend the title they have won in the last two years. Among the players Gor Mahia will be counting on is the new sensation Joseph Wanyonyi who has made quite an impression in his first two games. “I wanted to give my best in my first game and I am happy that I did that. I wanted to score to cap the day for me but then at the end of the day, the most important thing is the team winning. My target from here is to work hard and ensure I get a chance in the starting team,” he notes. “The team has been encouraging me a lot, the experienced players have given me a lot of support and it is on that support that I want to anchor my growth. The coach has been awesome as well and what I like about him is that he is very friendly, funny at times but very serious in his work,” concluded Wanyonyi. said Wanyonyi to The people newspaper.

He also indicated that he was initially set to join AFC. “I wanted to play for Leopards very much because my father who is also a former Leopards player wanted me to play for them. However, they wanted me to go for trials first, but I found that demeaning. They had already seen me play for the National Under 20 team and the experience I got while playing for Aspire made me an established player,” said Wanyonyi.

Is this game at Nyayo stadium or City stadium?why is it that journalists in this country always give us conflicting news???don’t they ever read from the same script?

  • To Wanyonyi, one match winning display can make you a hero, but can also be poisonous and lead to personality crisis where you begging to think that people need you more than you need them.

At Kogalo we have seen good players whom we expect you to emulate both in soccer prowess, commitment etc and try to fit in their shoes.

In your match to that status, be consistent, disciplined – Bobby Williams advice. Get a nickname ( I understand you are “jehova”)- the fans will give you a nickname if you deserve it. remember we the legends – Abbas Magongo – Zamalek, David Ochieng – Kamoga, Austin Oduor – Makamu, Isaiah Omondi – Janabii, John Bobby – Six million Dolla man, Peter Dawo – Omuga,

We would like another stream of legends. Right now we have “Calaba”.

I don’t see anything wrong with trials after all they take a very short time. Any serious EC must make this a pre-condition to signing a player as it means the TB & medical teams have evaluated the player. For Jehova all seems well but we’ve seen players with injuries or weight problems being forced on our TB to rehabilitate them.
Finally hope Jehova won’t do a Masika on GM.

i support you oduor , they will end up in their ethnic club and money dishes out to their parents with out the club knowledge! and one or two game cant make you a hero in GM .

    Reply
  • Jamaranda your argument is not sound you sound very shallow/backward and i think Kogalo is bigger than that….boss you are going tribal you dont sound as civilised as you should be Ingwe is the other big club that a player can play for despite his tribe let me ask you pinchez is playing for ingwe so should ingwe fans start talking like you.
About giving parents money…..no problem in that in Kenya clubs give, in Europe the parents ask and they ask for alot of money if you know a player called Mesut Ozil google his father and you will know how much Arsenal paid to have his son play for them.Football is no longer a tribal thing its about big money and Gormahia is a big club with fans internationally kwa hivyo if you dont have any thing to write please dont.Jamaranda you are disapointing and am dead sure Oduor12 is not with you in your shallow and backward thinking.

Ooh Laa la..!! ..”PAW AKUCHE KEEP OFF JAMARANDA”

@ JAMARANDA is entitled to his own opinion as posted above and I see no ill-motive other hitting the nail on the head. And if anything the lad himself obliged to futaa.com where his REAL LOYALTY and ASPIRATION is heading to. Let GOR and his PARENT mint money from EFUSI period. BELOW IS THE EXCERPT FROM FUTAA.COM

My favourite team is AFC Leopards

-Of course my favourite team is AFC Leopards but I decided to play for Gor Mahia, he admitted.

-When I came back from Qatar, they (AFC) wanted me to go for trials before they could sign me and even my father, a former Ingwe player, Mr. John Wanyonyi, wanted me to play for them, he narrates.

    All walks of life

-At some point I also felt like playing with my cousin Mike Baraza at the club but I feared being benched due to my young age so I decided to come to Gor Mahia because they were to rope me in as a professional. Here (Gor Mahia) they accommodate people from all walks of life and tribe, something that pulled me again to join them.

-Like today, the fans already know me yet I have not played many matches, am sure they will come to realize my full talents with time and AFC too and maybe come back for me.

THE CATCHING PHRASE IS “and AFC too and may come back for me”. You do not need some rocket science in telligence to internalize that the lad signed for GOR as his launching pad to enter the DEN triumphantly.

The word Giniwasekao, has been enlisted by wikipedia, who describe it as Luo for “we have taken this thing” and is now popularized by K’Ogalo followers

The anticipation to clinch this year’s Kenyan Premier League crown is so high at Gor Mahia that fans have invented a special name which has caught the attention of world’s most popular search engine Wikipedia.
The word Giniwasekao, (or wasekawo depending on Luo dialect in use), has been enlisted by wikipedia, who describe it as Luo for “We have taken this thing” and is a catchword popularized by Gor Mahia fans in expectancy of winning 2013 Premier League title.
Wikipedia further says that the word is an acknowledgement by fans that after an 18 year wait, Gor Mahia finally stand a good chance of winning the title thanks to a very strong performance in the first leg.
It says: “Whenever two Gor Mahia fans meet, it is an acceptable greeting to call out “Giniwasekao” to the other person, and the other K’Ogalo fan will answer as if in acknowledgement, “Giniwasekao.”
The origins of this chant are rather obscure, but the catchword is said to have been popularized by a number of diehard Gor Mahia fans, among them Collins Tony Anelka.
With the growing usage of Giniwasekao, other versions of the catchword have appeared such as: ginimarwa – this thing is ours, giniwasekano – we have taken and kept this thing, gininewakaochon – we took this thing a long time ago.
Following Sofapaka’s barren draw against relegation-threatened Karuturi Sports on Sunday, Gor Mahia needs nine points from remaining matches to be crowned champions for the first time in 18 years.
As it stands, Gor Mahia needs to win their next three games and they will be declared champions with two games to spare. Sofapaka now have 40 points from 25 games and they remain second. Ulinzi Stars’ chances of winning the title ended with their 2-2 draw with KCB at the Afraha Stadium.

@Paw Akuche please elaborate as to why Peter “PINCHEZ” Opiyo of AFC has his playing jersey labelled “PETER” instead of “OPIYO” before you brand JAMARANDA as a very shallow, backward and tribalist character. What comrade ODUOR12 and JAMARANDA pointed out is just to Pre-warn the lad not succumb to AFC demand based on tribal loyalty the “MASIKA” style and then he ends up wasting his career. Look at “MASIKA” formerly popular as PPO while playing for GM and currently can not even qualify to be a sub-chief.

Why cant we dwell on issues that will build this team instead of being so petty.
    These players are professionals, period!

As much as we give advice let’s avoid the issue of tribal chauvinisn and name-calling. The reason GM is where it is is because they don’t look at where one comes from, race, tribe etc. We even had a Brazilian who stayed for a short time. If you look at teams like TP Mazember the playing unit more or less represents the face of Africa. So the more diverse the composition of our team the further we will go.

I too believe GM is a big club. We are not small just because some ec have failed to steer the clua forward. By the way there used to be a ‘gor player who could wail and weep about envelopes etc. It took the wisdom of several bloggers who dismised his malice and nonsense. Could be the good performance finaly killed his vigour and natural appetite for busy bodying! Come up mr and or mrs gor player, arise and forgive yourself!

@ODUOR12 we better learn from our ‘mistakes’ and think about making the future brighter. I believe the lack of structures in GM has mirrored basically what the whole country was going thro’. A faulty constitution we moved with since independence not forgetting the falling soccer standards then. Remeber there was a time even GM fans could not fill the Russia stands at City stadium. When Okul, Singh (can’t remember the whole name) and others wanted to reform GM we had those who said that the club was being ‘grabbed’ from them So I’m sure by getting a diverse EC come December we will be able to move ahead. The word here is DIVERSE’. I believe there are people out there who CAN/MIGHT offer excemplary service that our legends.
On players admiring other teams that is no new thing. Even in EPL you find players confessing their love to a rival club but still deliver for their current club. We have even seen players scoring winning goals against the clubs they have signed for and are on the verge of joining. Even at our places of work we admire some rival companies but still deliver for our current employer. It’s all in the human nature

  • Quoting a little bit from the Scriptures Matt 12:34b ” the Bible says out of the abundance of the heart so does the mouth speaks” Positively analyzed,It is a confession of a good idea with finality. That is why they say “we have”, “Wase”, meaning it done with. it is in the past.
Secondly it is the confession of Faith because it is in the future. The league is still on, but that does not matter. What is to be achieved is so real that it can actually be seen and touched. The beauty here is that this is a resolve with no room for doubts. This started early in the season. Therefore it is actually a reality. The scripture says ” Now Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see”Heb 11:1 This is what the ancients were commended for. That is the strength of our confession of Giniwasekao. This is just my opinion.

Where does that leave Gor?Real Kenyan fans with real Kenyan invest are opting to invest outside because they fail to get what they want locally. Who is to blame? We should blame the sleeping EC

  • Surely, each one is entitled to his opinion, but the relevance of that opinion is what negates and turns your opinion redundant, selfish irrelevant.

We are on the verge of a league cup plus a possible double if we do well in the GoTV cup. Unfortunately, elections elections and elections are some of the comments I see here. Can’t that wait…. If the bloated EC were to concentrate fully on election matters – I know they are doing so positively by ensuring we clinch the league not by just politics.
Then I can conclude, that the season for the “change” is not here yet.

  • Jasawagongo@28, I am thinking in the same pattern as you.My thinking is that for Gor to reach where we are, there must have been some structural leadership. This in itself brought stability in this very competitive League. My opinion therefore is,let the leadership run its course and bring the team and its supporters to the end of the so long awaited glory which has been so near yet so far. In-fact anyone interested in leading K’Ogalo would not want to even try it now towards the end. I think they would want to be in the office when things are at the formative stages so that they can take responsibility of any outcome. But for this one, it has been cooked and ready to be eaten.

Gor Mahia are on the lead in a Shield quarter finals match against Western Stima currently underway at the Nyayo National Stadium.

It was Dan Sserunkuma who hit the roof of the net in the 38th minute latching on a through pass from Eric Okoth, six minutes later, the former Nairobi City Stars beat again beat David Juma in the Stima goal from an Edwin Lavatsa pass from the left flank.

Both teams started on a low note with no intention of getting an early goal but it was Gor Mahia who almost broke the deadlock in the 14th minute after Edwin Lavatsa found Joseph Wanyonyi with the latter sending it wide.

    Ball possession

Gor were now controlling matters with 53% ball possession compared to 47% that of Western Stima and could have opened the scoring in the 28th minute.

A neat exchange of passes between Edwin Lavatsa, Paul Kiongera and Joseph Wanyonyi cpould have paid off had the latter youngster slammed home.

Then came a chance for Kiongera, Lavatsa failed to control a pass directed at him in the 32nd minute, the ball fell to Kiongera whose close range shot just went inches wide off the target but things turned around six minutes later.

    Dan Sserunkuma

Eric Okoth found Dan Sserunkuma jockeying for position in the Stima box and latched on the through pass to hit the roof of the net and send the Green Army fans into a frenzy.

Sserunkuma was on target again in the 45th minute, utilized an Edwin Lavatsa pass from the left channel to beat a well composed David Juma in the Western Stima box.

    Yellow cards

Mustapha Ogutu and Wesley Kemboi are the only men so far booked in the first half.

A win for Kogalo will send him into the semi finals of the Shield.

Dan Sserunkuma’s brace is all Gor Mahia needed to knock out Western Stima and book a semi final berth in the Shield match staged at Nyayo Stadium starting 1630hrs local time.

The Ugandan international opened the scoring in the 38th minute before burying home the second in the 45th minute and ensure his side progress to the semis.

From an eventful first half, Gor came back in the second half to cling on the lead as Western Stima pressed on in a bid to cancel the scores.

    Second half

The Kakamega based side could have got it had they utilized the corner kick in the 49th minute after Ivo Mapunda tipped over Wesley Kemboi’s shot.

And just to add more effort at the middle of the park, Stima brought in Justin Monda for yellow carded Mustapha Ogutu in the 50th minute and later pulled out Nicholas Akoko for veteran Francis Ocholla, that happening in the 65th minute.

    Opening his account

With the defending champions comfortably leading 2-0, they continued displaying what they are made off and almost made it 3-0.

Edwin Lavatsa latched on a loose ball outside the box in the 72nd minute and David Juma off his line in the Stima goal, the Upper Hill High School alumni unleashed a left foot shot but Juma punched it out for a fruitless corner.

Impressing Joseph Wanyonyi came close to opening his account in Kogalo jersey but his efforts were denied by oncoming David Juma after being put through by Dan Sserunkuma.

    Sony Sugar

With two minutes of added time, it was Western Stima earning few free kicks to perhaps net an equalizer but today was not their day, centre referee Sylvester Kirwa called it a day.

Gor Mahia now join Sony Sugar who were first to make it to the semi finals
