Former Congo United defender Ronald Okoth has joined Gor Mahia on a two-year contract.

The player had stayed out of active football for a while and only resumed at the beginning of the season; playing in the University League for Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) where he is a final year Information Science student.

Big opportunity

In an interview with futaa.com, Okoth expressed his pleasure saying he was happy to join a team of Gor’s calibre.

-I’m very happy to have made the cut. This is a big opportunity for me to make progress as a footballer. I’m also privileged to play alongside some of the best footballers in Kenya, Okoth said,

He says getting a starting position in the team is hard but says he’s ready to fight for it and prove his worth.

Learning

-I join the team when its already fully functioning and has gelled well therefore my induction may take time, he said,

-Gor has the best players in the KPL currently; people I can learn a lot from and that is my top priority at the moment. However, I will play my part if given the chance, he added.

Okoth can play at any position in the defense and also as a defensive midfielder.

Paul Odhiambo

Gor has also signed Ali Abdalla from Coast United and Angelo Okumu from lower-tier side Tena United.

The three add on to earlier signings; Eric Ochieng from Bandari, Paul Odhiambo from Homeboyz, former Aspire Academy player Joseph Wanyonyi and Joel Bataro from Thika United.

Oboya

Gor Mahia have also confirmed the signing of Kenya international winger Patrick Oboya following a successful medical at the club.

The versatile forward has been training with the club since he arrived in the country from Vietnam where he had terminated his contract with top tier side Thanh Hoa.

-We have completed the signing of Oboya (Patrick) following a successful medical. He is now our player and we hope he will bring some great quality and experience into the team, George Bwana, Gor’s Secretary General is quoted as saying by the club’s official website, gormahiafc.co.ke.

The local transfer window was closed on Sunday 30 June after a month long activity.

  • I like Oboya’s aggresive style and ability to drive the ball forward. I hope his injuries have healed. Atakuwa moto hapo mbele.

I like the signing of oboya, now we good offensive midfielders the problem is a holding midfielder someone who can hold the ball and supply the strikers with killer passes iniesta style. There is no team in tpl with good strikers than gor but the problem is the supplier, yesterday you could see kiongera coming back to midfield to search for balls infact he turned to be asupplier upfront.
The problem with kenyan players is one, someone is shinning one season and after being named the player of the year he is nowhere to be seen.we had avery good holding midfielder last year and he really played well but this season i cant tell.i dont like name calling but he knows himself it is high time you wake up.
That aside, as i had said we have good strikers but bobby should put them down and talk to them how they cordinate themselves in the field because that is what is lacking.Lavatsa should be given rest coz ithink he has been utilised so much even in harambee stars thats why nowadays playing 90 min is aburden to him.
Otherwise the good thing Bobby has done is the signing of young players am sure they will help us in the coming years.LETS GIVE THEM TIME,WE should not hury them like our noisy neighbours who signed young players in january and in may they chased them away.

Oboya’s signing is the best news for the week.

Question – how many players do we now have in total? I hope we’ve not gone overboard in acquiring too many players then end up un-using 3-5 players; that would be a waste of resources.

As for scoring goals I think there could be a problem and strikers need to be more serious. As much as we may blame the mid-field, one should ask what happens to the chances created and you cant lie to me that those many chances created in front of a goal can only be converted to goals-scored when mid-field is good.

This is good, Oboya might just hold the key to the goal scoring problems in the team, that is if he is say at least 60% fit; If he is 100% the expect fire works and this will revitalise the other strikers.

Its tough going, where are our Ingwe brothers, Mr Ben DISI and co? A draw with Thika following 3-0 mauling of Sofapaka, sounds a little disappointing to Ingwe but that is how tough this league is. Now colleagues, you know that our team is doing well, well indeed.

  • This is good news for the team. As I said before we don’t always have to go for established players. We need to blend youth and experience the way Siang’a did. He had BB, Macheda, Kitawi, Pinchez as some of the youthfull players and mature players like Awilo to offer the leadership. The average age for GM players still shows that none is above their peak. So that means that we still have a potentially good team and looking around it still shows we have good players. While Ingwe and Tusker have the names we have the youth whose potential we need to harness. With players like Gaucho yet to hit even their 50% potential it’s upto the coach now to bring out that potential.
Now that Bobby has no assistant the EC needs to get him one. How about Koops to assist him? Just a thought since I know Koops is available and I’m sure there is something he can add to our team. That’s just a personal thought and I could be wrong. For those who watched Ingwe’s match with Thika yesterday they will appreciate that our team is not as poor as we think and that big names do not necessarily translate to wins

Those agitating for foreign coach needs to think twice and look at Ingwe statistics and compare with Bobby’s perfomance in the last 3 matches and see the difference.Out of a total of 33 points available Luc managed to garner only 13 which translates to 39% while out of 9 Bobby managed to garner 5 which translates to 55%.What we need to do is support the current technical bench and help them improve on the perfomance as the solution do not lie on the origin of the coach.

@ 8 you can’t compare coaches with only 3 matches. The important thing is to support the current coach and see what he can deliver to the team.
