Gor Mahia sink to Nzoia in GoTV shield

Gor Mahia surprisingly lost 0-1 to second tier league leaders Nzoia United in the round of 16 GoTV shield
Additional Reporting from goal.com
NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 28 – Ten-time GOtv Shield champions Gor Mahia have been dumped out of this year’s tournament after a 1-0 loss at the hands of Nzoia United, Edgar Nzano’s penalty doing all the damage to a club that has struggled over the last one month.

The talk before the game was all about head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira’s decision to axe goalkeeping coach Mathews Ottamax from the team over what he termed as ‘breaking the rules’.

“We have rules in the team, and I guess everyone does. When you break the rules, then you cannot be in the team. We talked on Friday with him and the players and we made everything clear,” the Brazilian said pre-match.

Under pressure Ferreira had made some changes to his team, Enock Agwanda partnering Jacques Tuyisenge up in attack at the expense of Meddie Kagere who started on the bench.

In the absence of usual starter Karim Nizigiyimana at right back, Luke Ochieng was handed his second start of the season while in goal, Jerim Onyango who has been the preferred starter in cup competitions found himself on the bench with Boniface Oluoch preferred ahead of him.

The two sides came into the match all attack especially in the first half. Gor had the first opportunity, Agwanda breaking into the box in the 4thminute but Nzoia defender Brian Otieno stretched to hit the ball off for a corner.

The hosts had a great chance in the 8th minute but Brian Yakhama fired wide under pressure from two Gor defenders. A minute later, Masita Masuta also had a chance after turning Ochieng inside out on the left, but his eventual shot was an easy pick for Boniface Oluoch in the Gor goal.

On the other end, Agwanda had three more chances come his way but both went begging. In the 13th minute, he raced to the near post to meet a cross from Erick Ouma, but the ball took an awkward bounce in front of him and went wide.

Three minutes later, he was sent through on goal by Francis Kahata, but Nzoia keeper Benson Mangala was faster off his line to block Agwanda’s attempt with his feet.

In the 26th minute, he raced onto another long ball, but his attempt to head over Mangala was futile as the keeper picked the ball easily airborne.

Nzoia broke the deadlock on the half hour mark, Nzano sending Oluoch the wrong way from the penalty spot after Ernest Wendo blocked Peter Gin’s shot with his arms.

Gor had a double chance to make amends in the 41stminute but they could not unlock the Nzoia backline.

Luke Ochieng pounced on a ball dropped by Nzoia keeper Mangala from a Francis Kahata corner, but his eventual shot was cleared on the goal line. Kahata floated the cleared ball back into the area but Harun Shakava’s header went over.

Gor were better starters in the second half and Tuyisenge who was a silent figure all through the opening 45 finally burst into life.

He was presented with two aerial opportunities with crosses from Ouma and Ochieng, but both went wide.

In the 65th minute, Marcelo made his first change, bringing on Baron Oketch for Ernest Wendo, meaning Gor now operated without a defensive midfielder.

Five minutes later, Marcelo completely threw caution out of the window, pulling out right back ochieng for striker Kagere, a change that saw midfielder Amos Nondi operate as a wingback.

But despite the two attacking changes by Gor, it was Nzoia who had the better of chances. Nzau should have doubled his and the team’s tally in the 73nd minute from a corner, but he hit the ball with his back unmarked when he raced into the near post.

Yakhama had the best and easiest of chances to completely take the game away but he saw Oluoch’s finger tips push the ball onto the crossbar after tapping in a cross from substitute Patrick Kwitonda completely unmarked inside the six yard box.

But his blushes were spared with Bernard Mwalala’s side holding on till the end of the game for a ticket into the last eight.

  • Wuoloooooo Yaye….I predicted a draw is the best we could have achieved our current circumstances against no doubt the best team in Kenya this year….I hear it could easily have been 3-0 in favour of Nzoia. Painfull is the fact that we had 6 attacking players in the field with walusimbi as the holding midfielder yet nothing to show for…a few shots on goal.

I appeal for calmness from fans as it is increasingly likely that we may win No trophy this season and therefore NO international competition next year.

Furthermore, In as much as am advocating for calmness from fans things simply are not adding up, rumours about rift in the technical bench between kenya camp and brazil camp. Racist comments are alleged to have been made in the past from the brazil camp, brazil camp has just sacked the goalkeeper coach, you can be sure the kenya camp is going to hit back with vengeance. Hearing from what ottamax has said, we need to search our soul for solutions. This brazil camp vs kenya camp tug of war MUST STOP if the club is to progress.

I humly appeal to my friend Ambrose Rachier to make painful changes by bringing in Sammy Omollo Panzo in an acting coach capacity till the end of the season to stabalise the ship and ensure we finish the league in a respectable position.

    This are painful times indeed.

Suspend Ze Maria with all his entourage. Reinstate Ottamax and then bring in Sammy Omolo as acting coach assisted by Tom Ogweno till the end of the season. What we should not do is to sack him, because that move will see us paying 3 Brazilians i.e. Waiganjo, Olima and Ze Maria himself.

I thought Ze Maria’s visit to his homeland was to reinforce his supernatural powers, but apparently it appears likeTom Ogweno’s mysterious powers have finally outwitted, outmaneuvered and outmatched those from the Brazilian camp.

  • In one match Walusimbi has played in 3 different positions as L.O.M, holding mid then finally as left back. The holding role played by Wendo, then Walu and finally Nondi. Truly we have a genius coach. Forever optimistic since Ingwe also lost. There is so much negative vibe in this team and i dont think it is Gattuso!!!!

@Musymo my basic coaching know-how persuades me that the defense is the last department that should be interfered with during a match. I am made to understand that only injury or a red card should warrant a reorganization of the defense. The bottom line to this is that the coach should be ensure he fields sure=footed defenders that are able to last the entire 95 minutes. Ze Maria is making some monumental blunders that openly betray his credentials as a genius coach.I really don’t think it is the Luos who transformed Ze Maria in to arrogance to the extent of discarding team ethics among the TB.

What these Luos are asking for is mutual respect. I am very sure that Tom Ogweno would be very happy with his portfolio as Assistant Coach in-charge of “Special Programmes” as long as he is accorded some respect.

  • From the utterances by Ottamax,it’s clear there is real subortage.Ottamax went social media to vent his anger at the coach.it’s very clear from the way he exposes his comrades in sabortage saying ” ze maria considers himself the special one”.he even laments how his “local” comrades hav been overlooked by the coach and being fronted with “petty” issues.he goes to drag the coach and his family into serious business.it’s clear now there are “luos” in the TB who feels at “home” and disrespect any foreign coach brought to club coz they consider themselves Gor damu. This group hav outlived its usefulness and as long as they remain close to the bench,Gor will go nowhere whether we hire zidane or Carlo ancelloti.I was glad when i first heard of the firing of Ottamax.in as much as i respect him as a legend to the club, his bluntant outbursts and show of anger ,was lack of professionalism and actually these are the suspected suborteuors in the club.I ask myself where did Marcello, nzigimana pin-point crosses go.nowadays Marcelo and nzigimana float them over the bar like players who hav never been on the pitch.nzigimana run casually on the right flank like he is in a warm-up in Bujumbura. This is the work of suborteuors to intoxicate Gor mahia players and weaken the team strong points. It was a big blunder to live these guys behind when we changed the TB.Ottamax doesn’t even recognize ze maria as his boss saying he going overboard.am hoping ze maria clears the TB of other remnants of subortage. This guys has away they want to be treated by any incoming coaches coz having with gor for the longest time they feel the are the special ones.am expecting two more to go very soon.No wonder many Gor foreign players hav been dropped from their national teams-These suborteuors are destroying carrears of very young and talented players for their selfish interests. The team now require a purge with or without a new coach. The current players are brainwashed and am afraid thier main battle is to bring down the coach. The earlier the coach act the better for the club now and in future.

When is he likely to get the winning one? Again these Luos you have been demonizing have been in Gor for the last three seasons we have been champions. So to me they are not the problem. If you have specific acts of sabotage on their part, kindly share. Nzigiyimana and Ottamax whom you have indirectly accused were not there today yet we lost, that makes your case very weak Sir. Finally my brother tell me why you think Gor should keep Ze Maria as coach.

This is shameful situation was apparent, I saw it coming a long time ago. Am that sceptical and pessimistic person who only celebrates when it is right to do so. The continued stay of this Ze Maria guy in Kenya is bound to waste talents like you have never witnessed before. He will fall out with every official and player and by the the time every body comes to his senses Gor Mahia will be the joke of the town. Back to my slumber and please wake me up when Jausenge scores.

I also don’t agree with those who are claiming that “luos” are the the problem in this club. Those luos have worked very well with other coaches in the past. Furthermore what is the composition of the EC? Is it not all Luos? This tousist should just go away. FN was a better coach during hard times. No wonder even the likes of Baron cannot shine as they used to in W.Stima. Even the local coaches are better than zimaria.

One day I said that there is problem between them and u said that I should respect people, the coach has done well, the problem is came in when he demand to work with Italian assistant coach, he wanted some of the players out, some of the senior players are not happy with the young lads, this coach as good as he is, they have decided to finish him as they did to the former one. If the new coach has to come in, let him have a free hand to bring in new players and new TV final. The current coach is too strict to indiscipline case of which some people in the TB are not ready to support him. I therefore it is over for him and us, that is the most painful part of it. AR new exactly the problem lies with TB that is y he could not decide on what to do and left them to sort out their problem

Listen well brothers,a spade must be called a spade not a big spoon,Ze Maria is tactless and proud and is best suited to be an academy coach where talents are being nurtured as working with finished products is not something this fellow can achieve. TB Sideshows aside, 90 mins in the field of play with a team he is fully responsible of selecting should bear results, all we have witnessed since his arrival is endless squabbles and fights within the TB and fall outs with senior players. I mean since he was given a free role to do as he pleases with the playing unit, wea are the results?Or do we want to say that Innocent Wafula & Abouba Sibomana don’t know how to play football while the same were central impact players during Nuttal days,so they just forgot how to play football when Ze Maria came? His ego fights with senior players like Gattuso that i talked about are finally bringing our beloved club to ruin.Unknown to you Walusimbi was almost joining that regularly benched out of the 18 player bandwagon had i not intervened due to the coach’s insistence that he doesn’t follow his instructions in the field of play. Two touches and endless back-passes cannot/will not/can never lead one to be Kenyan Champions, which he insists on like a dictator. Finally he doesn’t know African football as he has Never been a coach here so he can’t identify well-suited players nor insist on a style of play that is at Best Mediocre and can Never deliver any silverware.Players need freedom to express themselves on the pitch based on prevailing conditions and opposing team tactics and not be micro-controlled as Ze Maria does, for that he can play SONY PlayStation IV wea he controls all players thru his controller pad. I have said my bit and will continue doing so, consequences notwithstanding…

Amazing how ‘smaller’ teams out there are scoring freely while Gor Mahia with its Galacticos are in goal famine. Truth be told, there are some local players with funny hairstyleswho shunned Gor Mahia when we were in financial doldrums but have now come crawling on their bellies. What a coincidence that suddenly they have developed passion for K’Ogalo when we are swimming in money? Are they in the team for passion or for the money. How much commitment do they really have? How much pain do they really feel when we go down to the likes of Nzoia, Efusi, Brewkenge, etc?

Guys, this is the time leadership qualities need to come out of the EC and the playing unit. For the EC, their spokesman, Ngala will either adopt the hear-no-evil-see-no-evil attitude or give some flimsy reason. At times I like the Simba, Yanga, Real Madrid attitude. When it doesn’t work with a coach you keep on recycling till you get the right combination.
My problem is that players who were giving Gor problems while in opposition are playing like non-starters in Gor

@ Dan,let me tell you first hand what is & has been ailing Gor…Ze Maria insists on two touch football that cant work here in the SPL.The Kenyan camp in the TB as has been labelled above have on numerous occasions told him that much but when you do so you become an instant enemy. The result is we play possession football 70% between our half and the centre line rarely breaking or threatening the opponents final third albeit thru wayward predictable crosses that yield nothing. Instead of adopting tactics and technical formations that can help the team out of the doldrums he instead fires Ottamax who’s goalkeeping department is doing a marvelous job having conceded the least goals this season while leaves his striking inadequacies intact all premised on being a strict disciplinarian. He is not friendly with the senior players and is very harsh busting out instructions which almost always runs counter to what they consider their strong points and technical abilities. End result they sacrifice their expertise and follow Ze Maria’s aimless tiki taka full of backpasses. Bottom line Only a fool does the same things in the exact same ways and expects different results. Shuffling players endlessly but sticking ton a deficient system of play can never solve our striking problems. I have tried in vain to bring peace in the TB, i told him No Matter what & how or wea, we cannot and will not manage without Gattuso but he disregarded my advise. No amount of Wendo effort can make him possess Gattuso’s versatility in Midfield nor Aucho’s fluidity and seamless passing. No good coach in this World of Football can loose a player of Aucho’s Calibre then go ahead and bench indefinitely his closest match in terms of ability while knowing very well that any team in the world is as good as it’s Midfield wea every battle is won or lost. They don’t need to love each other just be professional and do what they are paid to do plus firing everyone who has been here and know the Spl in out cannot qualify as a wise decision. He is not in talking terms with Ogweno and all senior players relate with him on a cold shoulder basis. So tell me anyone, what do you expect from such a team in the Title Chase or field of play? Why not use players for their technical strenghts like Wafula,Abouba and Baron instead of trying to force a style of play that renders them useless and totally out of the 18 match day squads while we all know their respective capabilities. Since when can Baron Oketch play two touch football of control and back pass while we all know what he can do when released on a long accurate ball and left with two defenders to beat using his speed and trickery?Aol gi Gor ma sani

I am also bitter about Ottomax firing. These are people who stood with Gor during hard times. They better reinstate Ottomax or we will show them that we are hooligans as they are provoking us. The problem is not Ze Maria. Its Rachier & Co WHO DON’T WANT STRUCTURES!

Why are seasoned officials bogging us down with administrative blunders-
Mara Kenya/ Luo camp vs Brazilian Camp, mara sabotage, mara this, mara that.

RACHIER, NGALA, KILO, OROWE HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SOCCER ADMINISTRATORS?

1.IS THERE NO CODE OF CONDUCT AT GMFC FOR COACHES, PLAYERS, OFFICIALS, MEMBERS AFTER MORE THAN SIX YEARS IN SOCCER ADMINISTRATION.

2.WHAT TYPE OF CONTRACTS ARE BEING SIGNED AT GMFC?

1.After the Nutall saga, how can we ever be sure Ottamax is not being used?
2.Why was Rachier aloof that he will wait until the next game?
    3. With foreign coaches we should go the Mourinho/ Man. U way where even Ryan Giggs had to be shoved aside.

    Fellow Bloggers:
I suggest the from now on members during each AGM MUST committ elected officials to yearly performance contracts or targets. Failure to meet these targets should result in the automatic resignation of officials.

    1. Gor Mahia MUST qualify for a continental tournament,

    2. GMFC MUST reach at least the semi-final of CECAFA tournaments it participates in.

    3. GMFC MUST qualify for the group stages of CAF tournaments.

THREE SIMPLE CONDITIONS OR TARGETS IF YOU WANT TO BE A GOR MAHIA OFFICIAL.

I URGE FANS FOCUS ON THESES MINIMUMS AND TIE EC TO THESE TARGETS THEN THE REST WILL FOLLOWS. I.E GRAND PROJECTS LIKE OWN ETC. ALL THOSE PROMISES THEY GIVE.
NOWADAYS FANS HANDS ARE TIED IN THAT WE CAN NO LONGER “CHASE THEM AWAY” SO WE HAVE TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX TO TAKE BACK OUR BELOVED CLUB.

WITH THE 3 TARGETS ABOVE IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO TAKES OVER OR IF RACHIER & CO. REMAIN SINCE THE CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE WILL BE AUTOMATIC.

2016 YEAR WASTED AND WE HAD GOOD SPONSORSHIP. WHAT ABOUT 2017
