Gor Mahia sinks Thika United

Meddie Kagere tussles with Dennis Odhiambo

Gor Mahia continued what looks like an unstoppable march to their third succesive title when they sunk Thika United 2-0 in a midweek match played at City stadium on Wednesday.

Thika held Gor Mahia to a scoreless first half, but Gor Mahia was the better side and could have taken the lead as early as the 3rd minute but Olunga failed to connect with a Meddie Kagere’s cross. In the 5th minute, Thika goalkeeper Hamza Muwonge made a double save, parrying away Walusimbi and Ali Abondo’s efforts into fruitless corners. Gor Mahia continued to press forward. In the 36th minute, Collins Okoth’s goal-bound effort was blocked by a Thika defender. 5 minutes later, Vincent Nyaberi dealt carelessly with a cross from Kagere and almost scored an own goal.

In the second half, Gor Mahia continued to pour forward.  Only 5 minutes in, Collins Okoth marched towards the Thika goal but his well taken shot almost resulted in the opener. Gor Mahia finally broke the deadlock: The first goal came in the 63rd minute when a cross from the right wing was poorly cleared by the Thika backline. It fell right into the path of Geoffrey Walusimbi who volleyed home with no hesitation. His technique was excquisite

The second goal came from yet another poor clearance from the Thika Backline. This time it fell to Olunga who leaned back and headed the ball home for the second goal.

Coach Frank Nuttall lauded his team for their focus.

“This is a highly focused team that is determined to be winners and it is this focus that is producing good results”, said Nuttall

After the match, Thika coach Tim Bryett said he had no regrets about his team’ s performance.

“There is no shame in losing. We are rebuilding and we have some things to focus on”, said Bryett.

  • Thika skipper, Dennis Odhiambo, didn’t
like the standards of officiating. He told
Daily Nation Sport: “They (Gor) are being
assisted by referees! We are waiting to
see how far they will go in Cecafa
    (Kagame Cup).”

    • All big clubs are assisted by referees, Manchester Untd, Barcelona, Bayern… the list is endless BUT made only of champions.

  • We are also waiting to see how far Thika will go in Kpl log because out of 90points gor have only taken six from them so we expect 84points to them at the end of the season as their captain says we are being favoured.Congrats Kogallo and thanks to almighty for that win!

Congrats team that was very enterprising and entertaining football, keep it up.

Some very unfortunate comments from Dennis Odhiambo, the Thika captain. I have never thought he could comment like that. What amazes is that he did not say anything when they “beat” AFC in the most unfair manner. If this team plays the way they do no comments by anybody will distract them from a good performance at CECAFA.

Forget Nyamweya and co., start looking for alternatives to get this team to CECAFA, these boys need CECAFA and then CAF next year through Kogalo to raise their values and market themselves.

  • We give God all the glory for granting us this win. The doubters are being confounded: one after the other. Thank you Lord. As we turn our attention to CECAFA, may the power of God go with us to TZ to bring back the trophy back to Kenya. Amen.

I hope the office is aware that Nyamweya and fkf will not buy them tickets.
One more thing gor office needs to know is that participating in cecafa is not for the good of fkf or the country but for the good of gor and its players. Nobody is supporting us, we’ve just heard the comments of one Dennis Odhiambo.
I hope it has dawned on you, Ngala, that cecafa is purely a gor bussiness. You live in kenya and you know it, let us carry the burden God is with us.

  • Yesterday,s game was fantastic and flowing and that is the kind of football that attracts anyone. That helps in jelling the team together. As to Gor biung assisted by the refs I find this ironic. To the point of a player saying they want to see how far Gor will go….I can only say… Watch this space.

That narrative of Gor being asssisted by refrees is becoming boring.Gor is winning because ther are playing good and attacking football. They go for goasl from onset.Lets focus on football and not sideshows.

A free piece of advice to Dennis Odhiambo: in a game of football you cannot be a player, a referee and a match commissaire at the same time. That is what Dennis Odhiambo did and cost his team the game. Had he concentrated on playing, perhaps Thika would have won the match. Now this level of amnesia amazes me because the last time Gor Mahia beat Thika 2-0, it is the Thika coach who cost the team that game by trying to be a weatherman, a coach, a referee, team manager, a stadium manager and even match commissaire. It is so unfortunate that such sentiments can come from a team captain.

Both Gor Mahia goals were the result of poor clearance by Thika defenders, a department in which Dennis Odhiambo plays. Dennis Odhiambo has once again let this country down. The other day he chickened out of a national responsibility when all the 40 million plus Kenyans depended on him to salvage this country’s pride and prestige. This time round he has spewed garbage through his oral orifice.

@ The Bandit the guy is suffering from a condition known as “Maglomaniac”; which is a way of defending against loss in everyday life. My villagers will call it “Awang’ mach mar nyiego”. No wonder he relates Thika defeat to CECAFA.

The Trailer, this young man is pitiful. He had a very bright beginning in his football career, but was let down by wrong choices and choices, we were told, have consequences. Gor Mahia will definitely not fail in CECAFA the way he failed in SA. I bet he will even blame Gor Mahia for his failed trials in South Africa with a second division side, Umtata ‘Jazz’ to be precise, some four years ago. If he was as good as he wants us to believe, then why fail to impress even a second tier team. The fact that he was selected to do national duty against Ethiopia has got into his head and now he thinks he is Sergio Ramos. I wish he knew that only a lousy coach like BW can call a player like him for national duty.

          • Players are selected on merit, the best plays…well if they want out ,because the challenge is too much for them, they are free to go. Possibly to Gor B( Ingo’ s team)

          • Nuttal has a winning line up which can not be changed to incorporate non performing players. For sample, can the coach bench a player like Olunga or Kagere for Timothy or Blackberry? They must fight for their space for inclusion in the first eleven team. I think there could be certain quarters of players and technical bench members who are making such unnecessary noise!

We have the best coach with oiled tactical acumen that changes our mode of playing depending with the opponents styles of play. Take for example our matches against Chemelil and Thika that have locked games, in the second half of these matches, our coach changed the tacts of playing with more vigorous systems of attacks.
