Gor Mahia take on Mathare United in crucial match

Can Gor Mahia carry their Kisumu form to Nyayo?

After having played two matches in Kisumu City, Kogalo return to Nyay0 stadium on Sunday to take on Mathare United. This is going to be far and away one of the most difficult tests that Brazilian tactician Ze Maria has faced. Mathare are currently in second place with 26 points, 3 ahead of Gor Mahia. Their last match was a 1-0 win over Bandari. If Ze Maria does not appreciate the threat posed by Mathare then Ottamax will have told him.

“Mathare is our real threat. The team is currently in a good run of form and the fact that Kimanzi is their coach means that they are really hard to crack. He has assembled a team that is now very coherent and they are a tough opponent. But we are also doing well. We have won four games in a row which is also lifting our morale. So, we will give it a good fight,” said Mr Ottamax .

Coach Francis Kimanzi returned to his original home this season. It was under Kimanzi that Mathare last won the league in 2008. He has Mathare believing that they can win the league again.

Ze Maria for his part says he is happy with the current form and thinks his side can caqrry that form to Nyayo on Sunday.

I am impressed with our form, how we pushed until the last minute, and managed to collect maximum points.  It is what we wanted and I am happy with the outcome. We have to carry our performance to the next match against Mathare United and come back smiling. We put a good fight and believed to the last minute, and that is why we got the winning goal. It is the spirit we want in the team.” he said to goal.com

In the equivalent encounter last season, Gor Mahia beat Mathare 4-2. It was Michael Olunga’s coming out party in which he scored twice, thus silencing critics who were complaining that he could not score. Ali Abondo scored the other two goals.

Kickoff Time: Sunday – May 22 at 4:15 pm

Venue : Nyayo stadium

  • Tiki Taka the Samba way but with real purpose to score & score again will be paramount.Wendo should start in midfield with Aucho since tactical discipline that leads to technical execution is what will undo mathare.Aucho Must venture forward into the mathare final third to deliver Pogba kind of passes to Tuyisenge therefore a deep sitting holding midfielder is required to shield the back four…

  • Just make sure mathare don’t score first. If they do-God forbid, you will see the defence never witnessed for the remaining time.mathare doesn’t have high speed offensive players like western stima.so they will be 10players behind the ball.note that Salim is a master defensive coach.I expect an entertaining match as long as mathare are trailling or the game is barren.

  • It should be a game to be hyped and to meet our expectations; Kogalo victory.I expect to watch Abich and Johanna at their best together with ours in the right form and a well watered pitch(I hope they’re doing that now) then;fireworks

  • Expected to be a cracker. I don’t see Mathare as an overly defensive team, they like to attack too. With both teams playing attacking football, expect value for your money and goals. I hope they only go one way…. Only downside is that our attendance in Nairobi has been so poor, the atmosphere will be almost tomb-like. I hope and pray that the recent impressive results will pull people back to the stadium…We really need it against Mathare!!!

@okwekanago K’Ogalo needs their sponsorship partners including the CROWN and I expect to behave well and let the coach and players do their job. Your job is to support the team period. Attend the match at the earliest possible time , Charge and re.charge your head, sing, dance, shout and praise in favor of K’Ogalo. But the LUO-MAGLOMANIAC mannerism should end with the match at TJ O stature along Moi avenue.

  • Kimanzi always coaches negative football when he plays Kogalo. On Sunday expect negative football from Mathare United the way he used to do whenever kogalo played tusker
    during his tenure
. but this time Kogalo will beat them
We should also expect dubious calls in officiating . Somebody is trying to push either Mathare United or Tusker to win this year’s league . 70% of Tusker wins has been through penalties

  • The footballers have spoken. Hope we will get a positive outcome. Of course I hope a serious, tested and proven ref will be the one to officiate this match. Let there be fairness for both teams.

Folks you are reading too much in this game, to me it’s like any other game. Mathare is apparently so overrated so this fixture is like the modern day derby. You come and cheer soberly, let’s put bad behavior behind us. Let’s not play into the enemy’s trap considering the events of the last week in the city. Someone could be looking for the slightest excuse to come down heavily on us, so be very careful, let the match be played, whatever the outcome, let’s go home peacefully and disappoint the devil.

What is this in the back page of one of the sports weeklies about Brewkenge beating Gor Mahia to Meddie Kagere’s signature? Someone just tell it is not true.

@Barefoot, haven’t seen it but if so let it be. I still think Ochomo could be a better prospect than Meddie. I hear AS Vita also needs him. I think we should use our heads and not hearts when recruiting. I hear Ze Mario is also bringing in a Brazilian striker to be tested

  • @Dan Original my esteemed fellow blogger,Ochomo To Daa…not GM calibre maybe back in 2012 with his current form.Secondly,i am in thr thick of things as far as signings are concerned & so far we have run in circles with conflicting views, some are Pro-Kagere,some Pro-Brazilian young striker Ze Maria wants and me personally Pro-Top Burundian or Malian striker…So far kagere seems to be dropping down in the preference order with Efusi who apparently want everyone including Edison Cavani from PSG & Neymar from Barcelona obviously approaching him for possible signing. How it will pen out in the End only God knows but signings will be done

it’s good that all the views are for Gor getting a top striker. The cost of getting a foreigner can be very costly . Yanga and Azam have felt it if there is any breach of contract. Moreover it will be expensive to recruit by dropping one of the foreigners unless it’s by mutual consent.

  • @Barefoot bandit; The answer is simple. Can you imagine Kagere in Tusker colours in a game against, say City Stars; he scores a goal and dashes to empty seats to do that ‘lipstick’ celebration? The best place to build your football or maintain it is where you enjoy and fans are there to urge you and criticize.

  • Yes it is not cheap getting a foreign striker but we have looked locally for a striker capable of dribbling in space behind tuyisenge but none is available,we are only getting out & out running strikers which we don’t want due to Ze Maria’s playing style. After trials by the Brazilian,Burundian, Malian & possibly Kagere, the coach will decide who best fits his formation then we begin talks with the to be released foreigner…

  • I’m sure with the kind of soccer we are playing, mathare won’t be able to penetrate through both our mid field and defense hence its upto our forward to give us something to smile about.
