Gor Mahia trounce Sofapaka 3-0

Gor Mahia recovered from their lacklusture display against Rayon Sports to beat Sofapaka  3-0 on Wednesday.

Additional reporting from the Nation
SportPesa Premier League champions Gor Mahia made their intentions of retaining their title absolutely clear when they hammered hosts Sofapaka FC 3-0 in a mid-week clash at the Narok County Stadium on Wednesday.
The game started on cautious note with each team careful not to concede early.
Host Sofapaka had a chance to snatch lead in the 14th minute when Gor goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo brought down striker Ezekiel Okare in the box with referee Caroline Wanjala awarding Batoto ba Mungu a penalty.
But Odhiambo made amends by saving from striker Kephas Aswani.
COLLECTED LOOSE BALL
Gor took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Lawrence Juma who collected a loose ball after Sofapaka defenders failed to clear and unleashed a powerful shot into the net.
On resumption, Innocent Wafula inscribed his name in the score sheet when he converted a penalty after Sofapaka keeper Wycliffe Kasaya brought down striker Samuel Onyango in the box in the 64th minute.
Kasaya was sent off with Matthias Kigonya called between the sticks with striker Mico Justin the player sacrificed.
Seven minutes to full time, K’Ogalo launched another attack and with Onyango on target from Lawrence Juma’s assist.
TOP SCORER
Sofapaka coach, former Kenya international and league top scorer John Baraza conceded that they played badly and were affected by the sending off.
“We didn’t expect to lose this game, not until after my first-choice goalkeeper was red-carded,” said Baraza who rued the many missed chances in the first half, including the penalty.
“We had our best team but football is football, and with 44 points, we will still fight on and reduce the gap and at least finish at position two,” he added.
He said he would pick from the mistakes to prepare his team for this weekend’s game against Kariobangi Sharks at the same venue.
CRITICISM
Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr said he fielded his best squad after a criticism by the club’s management after last weekend’s loss to Rwanda’s Rayon Sport in the Caf Confederation Cup.
“We did approach the Sofapaka match with a lot of caution, and I had a point to prove here, that we can do better and we will win games,” Kerr said.
“Now I want to see what kind of criticism the management will raise again,” added Kerr who said he is now ready for the “Mashemeji derby” against perennial arch-rivals AFC Leopards on Saturday in Nairobi.

Ati the 3rd goal went to school? From its conception to delivery I agree and I like it when teams are at a loss which Mahia turns up on any day. Keep it up

My good friend, JTGJ, you laughed when I referred to Sofapaka as ‘she’. I hope you now understand why.

Now that is the kind of goalkeeper that if you have in goal, you don’t panic. Assuming that odhoji was in goal, God forbid,we would have lost that match bcos odhoji could not have done those saves that the goalkeeper that I’ve been advocated for to be Boniface ‘s assistant. I want to advice the coach that if Boni will not be available, he should not gamble with odhoji yet we’ve a very able goalkeeper in Frederick Odhiambo. Keep it up Fred, and I hope that nobody will think of releasing you to leave this mighty club. Your place in this club is guaranteed . I strongly believe in your quality unlike odhoji who is not good and other people think that he is good without looking his previous record.

  • Congrats to the boys. Good performance. Did not watch what happened but only for a fantastic save made by Peter.O
That’s diving bin agility bin anticipation. When the defence has been beaten then it’s the goalie who takes charge of situation, not watch. Odhiambo is not the tallest of players so to get that high while moving backwards and on a recline was not an easy act. Keep it up.
That too was save of the year unless anyone can find a better one.
I also pray that Kerr maintains this squad to tame Leopards.
It really irritates me when I miss such matches.

  • Senior team loses to Bandari, the junior team beats Chemelil. Senior team loses to Rayon, the junior team beats Sofapaka.
Gor needs a point against Ingwe to lift the trophy but Ingwe will do all things possible from the underworld to spoil our day.
From military tackles to time wasting, Ingwe will cause misery to us. Anyway the boys will still beat them.
I don’t know how prepared Kerr is to handle USM Alger but this should be his game of a lifetime.

  • This morning i presented a 10 point plan on how to revive our club’s financial fortunes….

    1. part privatise the club and sell shares to gor mahia SACCO and other affiliated private entities milking the club.

    2. Sell established players or send them out on loan with an option to buy. gor should be a development club.

    3. ringfence CAF CC monies for CAF tournaments only not for office upkeep and other administration matters like salaries.

    4. Get a sponsor to take care of the other support services such as transport and accomodation for players during KPL matches. A reputable transport and accomodation service such as hotels and catering facilities provider will be a perfect match

    5. Sell Gor Mahia bus immediately and have the same either operated under 4 above or is leased on a season basis.

    6. Push Gor Mahia Tv on digital platform and have all merchandise, match day information, match day materials, match day tickets and any other information pertaining to the club ( local content) sourced on line at a small fee or commission. This can be a revenue generator that meets daily expenses.

    7. Seek established partnership with other sister clubs across the continent who can help build a platform for player development in the future. all our under 17s and under 18s and under 20s should be exposed to continental football much earlier before taking first team regular slot at the club.

    8. Keep pushing safaricom to be our corporate sponsor. As we continue doing the right things and become more transparent in our dealings, eventually they will but that requires patience, tact and diplomacy.

    9. Adopt the much talked about barcelona constitution and ensure mass countrywide fan enrollment for as low as kshs 100 bob where fans choose the leaders and have powers to hire and fire at will with elections every 3 years. but we have to be transparent from the word go. This is easy as most of us have mobile phones

    10. Engage heavily with social entrepreneurs and encourage them to take an active role in building the brand of the club at grassroot level as part of the bigger initiative to alleviate poverty and scale up social development projects across the country.

Congrats to the boys. I now hear this team should play in the derby. If things go against us you will hear the same people asking where Blackberry, Meino, Jausenge, Kahata etc were. Bloggers here never cease to amaze me. As for me, I will let the coach decide who should take the field on Saturday. He understands his players better than any one of us.

Fredrick Odhiambo wuod Ugenya many thanks young man. Amosi gi lweta ariyo. You did it when Kerr first landed and you are still able to lift the team single handedly on your back when crucial times require. I support you to be first choice GK and Kerr knows this. Congrats team you were amazing. Fred might not be the most experienced Gor Keeper but at times wise men say “Experience should fear the strength and agility of youth”. The same saying applies to the case of Mieno vis a vis Lawrence Juma…Lifting the Trophy against our Perrenial failure arch rivals will be the highlight of the year…Lets throng the stadium in multitudes and live upto our billing as Mayienga Koko. We will make noise accordingly on that happy saturday…

This demolition of Sofapaka has caused a lot of panic in the Den. They are now clutching at any straw to survive tho ma ineno giwang’. Mind games galore. Mara Abdalla Salim Shitu is injured. Mara Shikayi and Isuza will be available. Mara Marvin Wabwire received a knock. Our boys should keep their eyes on the prize; mind games or no mind games.

Is like our second eleven squad is doing even better than our first eleven,,,, kudos boys but personally I was impressed with odhiambo in the goal he was actually the man ov the match in our clash with batoto ba mungu…

There is no ‘reaping big’ in that deal. KES 12 million is Walusimbi’s black market price. A clean deal should have fetched KES 21 million upwards….., but then why deal with KC in the first place? KC and Walusimbi together with Walusimbi’s agent belong to FIFA’s corridors of justice.

  • UHURU BAILS GOR MAHIA

President Uhuru Kenyatta has come to the rescue of Gor Mahia after facilitating the team’s travel to Algeria for their continental assignment.

Gor treasurer Sally Bolo on Friday confirmed that the head of state had bought air tickets for the team worth Sh6 million.

She said the club’s management was stranded and wondering how to offset the Sh8 million expense to North Africa for the team’s last group match of the Caf Confederation Cup against USM Algers on Wednesday.

“We wrote to the Ministry of Sports through Football Kenya Federation and they responded telling us they didn’t have the money,” said Bolo.

“This morning, we received a call from State House who offered to buy the team air tickets. We are very grateful and excited because the President has also wished us well.”

“Now our remaining task is to raise an extra Sh2 million to cover the team’s expenses including accommodation and food for the period we will reside in Algeria.”

The Gor Mahia EC should tell us how they plan to raise the balance of 2 million. They cant say there was no plan at all. The President have offloaded the biggest load by buying air tickets worth 6 million.
