Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia have been displaced from the top of the log after being held to a 1-1draw by Thika United on Sunday

Gor Mahia were displaced from the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings after being held to a 1-1 tie by visiting Thika United at City Stadium on Sunday.

The result coming a few minutes after Tusker had stopped Western Stima 1-0 away meant that the brewers went back to the top but only on goal aggregate.

Sunday’s match was always going to be challenging for the KPL champions considering their poor record against Thika United at the same venue.

It is here that Thika United denied Gor Mahia an opportunity to win the KPL title on the last day of competition in 2012. The two teams had also drawn 1-1 in the first leg match played at the same venue.

True to expectation, Thika United shocked Gor Mahia with a 26th minute expertly scored by  Jackson Macharia. He was picked out by David Kingatua with a back heel which he calmly volleyed home and there was nothing Jerim Onyango in the Gor Mahia goal could do about it as he watched helplessly as the ball hit the net.

The goal came at the end of a strong onslaught by the visitors who were calm on the ball and never looked intimidated by the huge crowd that turned up to cheer their opponents.

Two corners in the first ten minutes showed the early dominance by the visitors and was not a surprise that they went ahead first.

However, it took only six minutes for Gor Mahia to get back into the match after top striker Dan Sserunkuma equalized from the penalty spot.  Center referee Davies Omweno pointed to the spot after Vincent Omumbo handled in his box while trying to clear a danger.

Gor Mahia’s Godfrey Walusimbi was the first to be booked getting his caution with just a few minutes to the break. David ‘Calabar’ Owino was also booked for  a high boot offence. Thika United goalkeeper Hamuza Muwonge was the other player who was booked for time wasting.

Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson was forced to bring new faces into his starting line-up after losing some key players in mid-season which saw him start Collins Okoth, John Kariuki and Timothy Otieno and will be pleased by their performance.

The three new players gave a good account of themselves with Timothy Otieno recently brought in from Talanta Academy making some inroads into the Thika United backline but it still was not enough to give them a win.

Starting line-up:

Starting : 1 Jerim Onyango ,4 Kevin Oluoch, 18 Harun Shakava, 15 David Owino, 2 Godfrey Walusimbi, 3 Godfrey Kizito,  17 Eric Ochieng, 6 Collins Okoth, 20 Joseph Kariuki, 8 Timothy Otieno, 8 Dan Sserunkuma

Substitutes: 16 David Juma(GK). 30 Patrick Onyango, 5 Musa Mohamed, 10 Daniel Onyango, 7 Simon Mburu 25 George Odhiambo, 12 Arthur Ssemazi.

We really played an entertaining and offensive game pinning the opponents in their half throughout the game. Our only weak point was the inability to score in open play as well Oluoch’s side where he failed to connect the crosses but all in all he did very well. Like @Kosero said there is no point of worry in Gor now. The new signings were OK. I like the fighting spirit of Timothy Otieno, Ssemazzi, Mburu as well as Kariuki and Oboya when he came in.
The blot on the game was the blatant use of teargas on the fans. Looks like the police had instructions that immediately after the game DISPERSE the fans, whether they are peacefull or not.

i thought Gattuso also played quite well considering his long absence from the game.
However the major concern was the level of officiating and negative tactics from Thika utd.
These two concerns is a major setback in our endevour to improve soccer standards in the country. No wonder our refs never make it to the top and the Thikas of this world are just in the league to make up the numbers….very pathetic!!!

okoth Gatusso is the solution to that midfield, the guy is still good I liked the game..

The game was very good. Timothy Otieno gaves us good options upfront and so is Ssemazzi. Mburu and Kariuki did well in the midfield.
Because we diddn’t win the game you will hear our usual pessimists bashing everybody left, right and centre. For the first time we seem to have gotten our recruitment right.
On gate charges and logistics we are still doing bad. I heard to watch almost the whole of first have from the railway bridge because of the confusion at the gates as well as being teargassed , yet we had the tckets. We need to improve on that area. But even as fans we need to be civilised abit. Some of us without tickets actually cause the problems at the gates thereby impeding those with tickets from entering. The sooner we get the e-ticketing working the better for the club, both financially and for the fans. We go to enjoy gor at the stadium but not to be teargassed

  • If as some say that was a “very good” game then the meaning of good has changed. No wonder teams at the bottom & lower half beat us by even 3-1 margins.
We had no meanful attacks/shots at goal.
Our goal came via a genuine but lucky penalty. From the bridge (due to unfortunate reasons) you can’t have an accurate view of a game
We are predictable & again didn’t have an antidote for Thika’s usual game plan which is to sit back & snuff out any attacks b4 their final 3rd.
    Such display bores fans.

  • Well done boys, unknown names great game. Mashemeji went for big names and you saw what Ulinzi did to them. Thika are well known with negative tactics when they face K’OGALO. Keep that spirit TB and our boys.

  • What is wrong with Oduor12 always complaining. For once in a long time i enjoyed the game. There is hope great hope. I think upfront we look good and the midfield too. Oooh Gatusso is back the ever battling Gatusso. Mburu was so calm and Timothy Otieno though timid at first built confidence with time. He is much better than Obwoge. Our weak link was probably the right back. I can bet we are going places and take it to the bank.

4once i agree with oduor,we played averagely as a team,we lack that desire n passion,we play like thea is nothing at stack.honestly i was expecting so much frm the likes of kariuki, yes he has talent bt he doesnt have that drive, zeal 2b a champion or even cement his plc in 1st 11,same with oluoch his crosses are so poor that instead of being a danger 2opponents its vice versa coz of counter.dan s,his work rate is poor,he needs to work on that if ever he wants to turn pro.kudos to gattuso n oti

@LEVELMIND I think kariuki somehow slowed the pace of the game, yes he is a talent with very accurate passes but speed game abig noo, oluoch is abig let down with very inaccurate passes, musa should be back to his number.otherwise the boys plaid well putting into consideration that they are just from midseason break.

  • the naked truth is that we wont retain the title, champions get results, anything short of that are stories. if not, why didnt playing well retain us at the summit. infact things are literally getting out of hand. and i hope somebody doesnt have a hope of us beating western stima in mumias, we simply lack the pedigree. without any doubt the technical bench has hit a dead end and lack new ideas. expect to see kogalo at position five a couple of matches from now, that will save us alot of pain and frustration as was evident by the coach complaining on the added time. that was defeatist and not wanting to own the problem.tuko chini tu sana fulstop.

@one man,it is also good to observe that but you should also know that you cant win all the games the way you want it even if you form your own team and you put it in kpl and at the same time you be the technical director with all those your ideas.tusker who is at the summit also drew at nakuru the other day ,chemelil was beaten by bandari who has been down the whole of last leg, mathare also beat muhoroni who has been above them .so what you should know gor is also among the 15 teams in kpl and it can loose, draw or win. so man, you continue lamenting since the other teams are also competing or you form your own team and go unbeaten we will join you…From what I saw in city stadium ,the team performed fullstop.

By the way I cannot remember when i last read a positive comment from @ODUOR12 about the team. It’s always about an incompetent EC, clueless coach, inept players etc etc. He could be part of the crowd that as-usual was calling for T. Otieno to be subbed just because he wasted a chance. Playing for Gor on your debut and getting acceptance is so hard from the fans. By the time the game ended nobody raised any issue about the same boy as he proved later on in the second half that he has what it takes. Kariuki might not be the Gatusso type but he has what it takes to fit in the team. Whoever watched Boniface Onyango of City stars and now at Ulinzi will realize that the boy is slow and not powerfull but very intelligent and uses his physique appropriately, so is Kariuki.
We might not win the league this year (though I still believe we have a better chance than most teams) but i believe that we are still title contenders as it is.
Definitely we will/or not lose some matches though I will not be the pessimistic type to say we cannot be Western Stima as we have ever beaten them several times at Bukhungu. The other teams will also lose matches, the star-studded, monied Ingwe is a classic example, as well as Tusker against Top Fry. So no point to worry.
I also managed to watch the U19 team play at Jericho and noticed that we have some good young players in the team. But it seems that the team lacks support, including simple medical provisions. They have now won all their matches which is something extra-ordinary considering even the state of the pitches for those matches

  • I ain’t responsible 4 anyone’s memory span short/long.
The fact that u watched half of the game from the bridge means that either u didn’t have a ticket or adminstration of the gates by EC is inept.
Btw the way the fans also suspiciously increase in the 2nd half? WHY!
Y does BW complain about additional time when 4 90min we had no shots @ goal. I rarely dis players coz they’re recruited & fielded by TB. Usual excuses have started let team gel, undue pressure, negative play, other teams also lost.

The team played very well apart from right back that was weak and l believe with Musa it will be stable.l can foresee Mburu giving Ochieng compe for the position.

  • I dont see the reason why we should be always complaining since the way i saw that game from wea i sat,we played well n its just some small mistakes then we r thea, infact if u noticed how the players fielded played if for real u av this club at heart u need to appreciate what they did yesterday,i support someone here who said the monied read(masemeji n tusker)went 4 the name but we we went 4 talents as was demonstrated yesterday, the problem with some of us is that we always believe Gor has to win,to them we should not even draw which is not posible, they r the people who always make noise even on things that is not even there, they r the people who r always worried for nothing as someone put it,its high time we should know that this is football u loose u draw or win n GOR is no exceptional,we also need to appreciate what the EC is doing for all the months we av been without a sponsor they av paid salaries and allowances for players even if not all of it,we also need to know that they r the same people fighting for to get a sponsor of which i can authoritatively confirm that will be having our sponsor in september 1st,so if we can still compete with these team which have all the resources now what will happen when we av all the money to buy who we want? hahahaaa KOGALO will kill people bende okbichalonu.

Where have I called anyone names?
Some have raised issues with my post to which I’ve responded citing specific incidences which they referred to.
I agree Mburu impressed, Kariuki was lost, Otieno tried in the 2nd half, Oboya’s too individualistic.
Our attack is blunt. Look @ Thika’s goal that’s tactical acumen.
Someone answer my question(s) how many chances did we create?
Did we have any hard/serious shots at their goal?

ODUOR 12 is so factual and very objective in his post where as “others” are busy building castles in the air after the so obvious mediocre performance. We should stop this wishful thinking that other teams will bla….bla… blah! BW wake Up and smell the coffee, since it is your job to UP our game. Our boys were clueless and disjointed, just rushing to nowhere with the ball. Then that ka right back..”Oh my oh” A-HIGHWAY!!

Looks like we were either watching different games or we have different perceptions of what a good game is. If you believe that you MUST win a particular game then the moment you don’t then it becomes a lousy game. A case in point is the 2012 game that we drew with Thika and lost the title which was in our hands.

good is relative.i believe those who are not satisfied with the results have a point, lets see that desire, anger to win, zeal and passion to get the points, make it difficult 4 our opponents, constantly shutting them.our players shuld take advantage of our passionate fans by equally playing with passion i mean bidii,if u get a point out of gor at city u have REALLY WORKED 4 IT.I think wat some of us r saying is WE NEED TO IMPROVE A.S.A.P,lets not luk at our rivals if we know wat we want as a team.

Everybody wants to win for GOR. Playing for Gor is pressure . Sometimes I wonder at some of the comments. Lets support the club spiritually and Financially. Offer solutions. We chased away spondors. Next we will chase EC. Then some good for nothing sponsored man will be at helm for sake of Politics. By that time we will not even have this club we love so much. As a person always ask yourself if what you saying is credible. Start with yourself as a person. What meaningful change in life have you done to yourself or neighbours. Once you realize none. Start being positive and help us all make Gor great. Telo e Gor tek.

  • You are all correct but here is the big question……..Efusi pays players the highest salary, tusker offers players the best working environment, sofapaka gives players the exposure and network so what does gor mahia offer to its players ?

Let’s be brutally honest before we criticise the players, this is all we can offer or is it have!

yes @bill everybody wants to win for gor,bt i believe desire & determination varies frm player 2player,e.g tim, kariuki, gatusso even kelvin(defended well bt he was not productive going 4ward),all had a gud game bt u culd see the workrate of tim & gattuso was a bit higher than the other two.am not in anyway condeming them,if only we encourage & raise the level of determination as a team we can do beta.otherwise we have a gud team,

  • good team we have, but kindly somebody consider our games after the lose to bandari, the defence was extremely mean, the midfield was clicking and the striking was opportunistic and thats how we ended up at the summit. my problem with kogalo is that they never win matches convincingly, our score lines are always narrow, somebody refresh my mind, when was the last tym that kogalo won by 3 or more goals? we have to set our standards high, tho we cant win all matches, but we cant afford to be complacent. GOR MUST PERFORM FULSTOP.if not it should be let to be an ordinary team just like the other 14 ordinary teams in KPL.

To all of YOU,I watched the game and my verdict is it was a good game all standards. Before you criticize please know where we are coming from, where we are and where we intend to be -everybody is keen to be at the top. And above all which team were we playing? Thika, never an easy opponent for Gor any time, so why all the criticism? Some of us want the team to win all games? That is simply not possible. What I can foresee, one might ask? A great time ahead if we encourage the boys more and criticize less.

@Dan Original but before that we were PROPERLY thump 5-0 by Esperance de Tunis which of cause was due to their financial “MUSCLE” if i can quote none other than BW.

Then there was the low period when we lost to Top Fry and Bandari consecutively and that was the defining moment when read RIOT ACT to BW and his boys to change tact; and we all saw the turning point despite all the financial difficulties from both within and without.

What we are simply asking for is that as champions our stronghold has been second-leg fixtures and we expect the boys to emulate that without too much hullabaloo.

  • This is the definition of Talent as pertaining to any activity; a natural ability for being good at a particular activity. The only talent I saw on that pitch was Gatusso, the rest were just running after the ball like headless chickens. And if that is what some of you are calling a good football then it’s a quack football.
The players always go to the pitch without any alternative plan from their original lat pattern, and that’s why they normally sort to playing long balls in search of Sserenkuma for luck to smile on their way.

You don’t want to hear this but Oduor12 and Ogango Trailer are simply telling you the obvious – THE TRUTH.
