Gor Mahia’s best start in decades

This past weekend, Gor Mahia became the first team in the 2015 Kenya Premier League to reach the 20 point mark. Gor Mahia thus opened up a four point lead in the league standings with a game to spare. But its not just the fact that Gor Mahia is winning but also the impressive manner in which they are dispatching teams.

Against Ushuru in the previous weekend, Gor Mahia comprehensively outplayed the taxmen in all facets of the game. Against Ulinzi  Gor Mahia knew fully well that the KDF side would attempt to intimidate them with physicality, something that military teams have always done since the early 198os with Scarlet FC of Nakuru featuring Ambrose Ayoyi ‘golden boy’ and Washington Muhanji.

Indeed Ulinzi have always been a tough nut to crack for Kogalo. In 2010 for example, Gor Mahia succumbed to a 0-1 loss at the hands of Ulinzi in their second match of the Kenya Premier League. Ulinzi repeated this feat again, beating Gor Mahia in the first leg of the 2012 season. Then in 2013, in the fifth match of the season, Ulinzi beat Gor Mahia 2-0.

In 2015 however, Gor Mahia are unbeaten through nine games with an impressive goal difference of 14 goals. No team is even close. The next closest team has a goal difference of six. In terms of goals conceded, there has been concern about Gor Mahia’s inability to keep clean sheets. However a closer look reveals that Gor Mahia has conceded the fewest goals. This is in large part due to impressive displays by new signing Boniface Oluoch in the Gor Mahia goal, not to mention new arrivals, Sibomana, Nizigiyimana, Musa Mohamed, and Shakava, with Gattuso and Aucho patrolling the defensive midfield area.

Gor Mahia’s 23 goals scored is also the highest in the league. Now this is one area that Gor Mahia never does well. Even when they won the league in 2013 and 2014, they were not the highest in goals scored. In fact in 2013, despite winning the league, Gor Mahia scored a total of 32 goals throughout the whole season. There were three teams that scored more goals. A significant factor in this is the return of Ali Abondo who has been a pleasant surprise this season, finding the back of the net with regularity. Another new signing who has had a significant impact is Innocent Wafula with his brilliant runs down the flanks and ability to find the attackers with his crosses. The attacking pair of Olunga and Kagere are also starting to gain a measure of cohesion which will give opposing defences plenty of nightmares.

Below is a comparison of the first 9 games of the season for the past 4 years:

Since the period between 1999 and 2010 was a dry one for Gor Mahia, one can safely assume that they did not have a good start during this period.

Indeed it has been decades since Gor Mahia had such a brilliant start to the season. To find a season when Gor Mahia had such a brilliant start to the season, fans may need to go back to the 1990s, perhaps the 1993 season. Fans should have a lot to get excited about and should dig into their pockets to help sustain the club.

while our performance on the pitch is A,our performance on accountability is E!!
why haven’t we been told about the gate collection from the Ulinzi game?
By virtue of having paid to watch the game,it is my right to know what was collected!!

Rumours by futaa.com has it that players are on a go slow and hv not travelled to awendo yet, if this is tru then we need to act with speed. We kogalo fans are all happy now since no team has matched our strength so far,but it seems the EC is workin to frustrate the players by not paying their salaries and allowances in time.

Players are again allegedly on a go-slow demanding 2 months pay and have threatened not to go to Awendo for the SONY game. So sad that we have to go through this so often. We collected 0.9m from the Ulinzi game but looks like that is not enough to pay for the 2 months

You complain to much chief. Our responsibility is to pay to watch the game and the EC to look after the welfare of the team. We all know how things are and we can only pray that things works for the club.”

Now put this statement in context, when EC is apparently not paying the team for 2 months we should just pray even harder that “things work for the club”.
Who in the EC has gone 2 months without pay?
@ Dan O we are simply not PRAYING enough.

  • Gor best start in decades ……Yes agree 100% but only on the pitch .

Off the pitch, Gor’s worst start in decades , Go – slows and player ultimutums have become too many, this is the third go slow in only 9 matches.

whats shocking is that our players are delivering with all this off the pitch issues….what if we didn’t have all this issues ?????????? As fans, I think we are getting tired of this and it time we close this chapter once and for all.

it’s really hurting to hear the same plight week, week out. I’m beginning to think there is more than meet the eye. this analogue EC does not want to away from the past. the club is suffering because of their ineptness to realise we in the 21st century. what is so difficult for these guys to start the membership drive across the whole country? they have realised that, the fans are emotional and attached to the team, so they will not entertain any meaningful changes. we are tiyed to hear players staging a go slow while there are so many ways of making the club self sufficient. no more contributions the beggars way from me.
