Patrick Odhiambo becomes Gor Mahia assistant coach
SoNy Sugar coach Patrick Odhiambo has confirmed to goal.com that he will be taking the position of assistant coach at Gor Mahia.
“Yes I am joining Gor Mahia but we are still negotiating some aspects of the contract that includes the years of stay,” he said to goal.com
As head coach Odhiambo led SoNy Sugar to an impressive 5th position in the 2018-2019 Kenya Premier League. He had previously coached at Muhoroni Youth and Chemelil Sugar.
He replaces Zedekiah Otieno who left to take the head coaching position at KCB. The decision was likely finalized after the return of coach Hassan Oktay from holiday.
Gor Mahia preparing for CECAFA Club Cup
With the return of Oktay, Gor Mahia are now preparing for the 2019 edition of the CECAFA club cup which will start on July 6 in Rwanda.
According to the Star newpaper, Gor Mahia will face off with DC Motema Pembe of DRC, KMKM from Zanzibar and AS Ports of Djibouti in Group D .
Group A is composed of Rwanda’s Rayon Sport, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic Congo, KMC (Tanzania) and Atbara of South Sudan while Group B has holders Azam of Tanzania, Mukura Victory (Rwanda), Bandari of Kenya and KCCA of Uganda.
Group C has APR (Rwanda), Green Buffaloes (Zambia), Proline of Uganda and Heegan of Somalia.
Gor Mahia finished 3rd in the 2018 edition, after losing yet again to bogey team Azam
SoNy Sugar refute reports of Tobias Otieno transfer
SoNy Sugar Team manager Emmanuel Geno has refuted reports that defender Tobias Otieno has joined Gor Mahia.
Otieno is still our player and we have not received any official approach from any club. Otieno has a running contract of four years and you should not believe the rumours purporting that he has signed for any club. Let me clarify that no one has approached us for another of our players, let alone Otieno,” Emmanuel Geno told
Its good to see another jadala scaling to new heights but i wonder what became of austin oduor, tobias ochola , allan Odhiambo, paul ochieng ‘kunde’ and a one mr dan ogada. Any of this club legends should now push for a role in the new constitution.
What role are they qualified for?
Tobias Ochola is actually a qualified coach who had coached Gor Mahia on two stints in the 90s. However, you cant be given a job you dont apply for. Patrick Odhiambo is well qualified and will add new ideas
If coming to Gor opens a door to become coach in another club, so be it. Welcome
Welcome to a High Pressure Unit. You will loose sleep sometimes or most of the time. But you will be appreciated when Gor does well.
I have never understood how and why anybody would leave a job as a coach to be an assistant elsewhere , e.g the manager of Watford or Southampton leaving their clubs to be the assistants to Klopp or Guardiola , just like I never got to uunderstand how somebody who has been an Harambee stars and Gor Mahia coach being contented being a semi permanent assistant coach in Gor Mahia , This is just sheer Mental and Professional lazyness , no wonder we are now importing coaches from Burundi and if you look at Afcon , you will note that the coaches of e.g Senegal , Cote d voire ,Ghana are locals who took their careers a little bit more seriously and you dont do this by perpetually taking refuge under a fellow man’s skirt .
How far would Zico be with just a bit more career seriousness ?
@teddy, some of us care more about the paycheque. And at the risk of being branded professionally lazy, If hypothetically, I was given a choice, I would rather be a Gor Mahia Assistant Coach than a Wazito, or Vihiga United or Western Stima head coach. The visibility, the excitement, the fanbase………
@Musymo, you are 100% right and @teddy sofaset branch entebbe there is nothing wrong with a young coach to learn from big teams.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with becoming an assistant coach after being head coach. Being able to pay your rent is more important than prestige. So if another club offers you a better deal, you take it.
We congratulate patrick for his appointment into gor’s technical bench. You are now #sirkal. You thereby earn our mandate and confidence to bring in your huge input for an inpact and success of our club. With cecafa around the corner, caf cc, and kpl there is no time for honeymoon, your plate is obviously full. It means you’ll have to burn the midnight oil and go an extra mile in training and guiding the team in line with the clubs targets and ambitions. Hope you were the missing chip of the puzzle and that in conjunction with the coach you will inspire and breath a new lease of life technically in the team. Wish u well.
The premise of my point was vis a vis career strategy and not survival strategy , if it is about spinning on the same spot for the sole basis of survival e.g paying rent , then I very well understand that point of view , but that was never where I was coming from , it is this latter day survival strategy/ambitionless/quality coaches that is at the heart of our present day inability to identify local talents forcing us to import from countries we should be exporting to , we are now importing players and coaches from Uganda , Rwanda and Burundi , next will be South Sudan and then after that will be referees and linesmen – small picture mentality .
However , once somebody becomes a member of Gor Mahia club , in whatever capacity and despite my reservations , I will support .
Gor Mahia has the best head coach. The reason why they go to Gor is to learn and become better. In addition, Gor is the only club where you deal with a must-win kind of pressure. On importing coaches, Uganda has ALWAYS been ahead of Kenya in terms of coach and player development. A coach from Uganda is always a plus to the league. Remember Paul Nkata with Tusker and Sam Ssimbwa with Sofapaka, when they were around Gor had a real competition
nothing to smile abaut cz upto date no any signing yet cecafa begins on 6th july are we serious with transfer really and lately i have watched ugandan 2nd match in afcon and not seen charles senkakuta of jasego, so plz jasego we need knwn players like hamisi of burundi not waiganjo signings lke mustafa then why dont u let mzee oliech and kobe kahata to go and then add their salaries together to lure Emanuel okwi from simba the guy is vry good and those who are watching afcon can confirm and being that the guy is not happy at simba tangu kagere aende we could easily lure him to replace tuyisenge if we get him a good offer plz let us thnk big cz no need of paying oliech alot of money and cannot even manage 1st eleven, paying mustafa & ssekisambu as foreigners and cannot even bench local players then why could we have atleast 2 sharp foreigners and remaining position for our local than having many foreigners who cant take as anywhere
Across our borders , Simba SC have just in the past one week signed 2Brazilians and some serious player from Al Hilal of Sudan-This shows seriousness .
we dont have that money. Simba chairman is a billionnaire and they have several sponsors. Kenya we dont even have a league official broadcaster. Gor will sign good players as always and will beat Simba with their Brazilians. They lost to Bandari just this year with a squad full of internationals, Zimbabwean, Ugandans, Rwandese, Burundians, Congolese. Being Brazilian does not guarantee one is a good footballer thats just a perception
True Teddy, in Gor mahia everything is dead in terms of players recruitment yet we are already facing star players exodus, the EC is privy to that, big teams across African are in the building process with extra quality players and they are breaking bank to acquire their signatures but in Kogallo let us just prepare for WAIGANJO caliber recruitment of players. In the ongoing AFCON,the following players can easily fit at kogallo,OKWI,Patrick Kaddu (KCC),Rhama Billiat(Kaiser chief), Lumala abdi(vipers),etc
You say very well that those teams are breaking bank.which Bank do you think Gor should break or you only talk emotionally
At Gor Mahia, we buy potential and make them better. Philemon, Shakava, Onyango, Samwel, Kipkirui were all potential and now they are becoming better. Unless you are going to give the club some money then we can afford those people you mention. BTW, only Kahata and Tuyisenge are leaving and Gor has replaced bigger names before. Even Olunga, Kagere, Rama Salim, Serrunkuma, Aucho, Baba Kizito, Walusimbi, Musa Mohammed, David Owino, Teddy Akumu, Peter Opiyo have all been replaced in the last ten years and we have reached even greater heights without them
@Nyakwar Ondenge , my post on Simba Sc recruitment was independent of what is happening in Gor Mahia and I disagree with you on the point that nothing is happening in Gor and to your suggestions as to who Gor should sign , well to begin with , lets start with Simba SC signings , you will note that non of their recruits are participants at Afcon and that includes Kahata , their is a reason why that is so , now to the players that you have mentioned plus the others in Afcon whose names have been floated on this wall , the fact of the matter is that any player , any , including that Burundi guy Bigirimana will be European bound or to the big budget clubs around the world if they shine (and for you to note them it means they are shining ) and that is why all the players are telling all their suitors that they talk AFTER afcon , and that includes Kahata to Simba .
There is a lot of intricasies , dynamics and compexities that go into player recruitments and one of the pros while doing so is to do it quietly unless you are a moneybag internationally or locally like Wazito.
The painful truth we have to swallow is that Gor Mahia as it is now is the equivalent of Ajax , Porto etc , we cant compete for the premiums , like Ajax and Porto we have to create our own and the other thing to accept is that after creating them , they will leave us, Sad but True .
So the transfer dynamics involved in an Afcon year is very different from if it wasnt there , but just to go a bit down memory lane , before the likes of Walusimbi , Kagere , Tuisenge , Marcello , Olunga etc came to Gor Mahia , who would have floated their names for them to be signed ? , Did we even know them ? , and did they cease to exist coz we didnt know them ? .
From time immemorial, Gor Mahia is know for signing non-established players. Established players have never thrived in Gor. Very few of them if you ask me. For that matter, I want to say here that I have full confidence in the team that is currently handling recruitment of new players. This exercise is not a public rally where you shout about everything. We shall be informed once the process is completed.
Amor, Piny Mor, Polo bende Mor. Fro God and my beloved club – Kogallo
If the following information is credible then something is happening at Gor Mahia:
Gor Mahia trio of defender Alphonse Omija, goalkeeper Caleb Omondi and striker Samuel Osoo have already linked up with the senior team for preseason training after signing long term contracts with the club.
Ombija who is a central defender joined the club’s youth side at the start of 2019 after featuring for the national Under 17 team; the 18-year-old has penned a six-year contract.
Caleb Omondi, on the other hand, has been with the youth team since 2018 and graduates to compete for starting place in the senior team against Boniface Oluoch, Shaban Odhoji and Fredrick Odhiambo.
19-year-old Samuel Osoo netted thirty goals in the 2018/2019 season with five goals coming in his last two games; the versatile player also able to parade as a winger.
Osoo and Omondi have also penned six-year contracts with the club.
Once again should this information to be credible then my advice to Alphonso Ombija is to take the exploits of Methis de Ligt who is actually his agemate as his measuring standard.
My only worry is that the Gor Mahia coach doesn’t seem to believe in youth.
Who has been playing Kipkirui, Boniface Omondi, Geoffrey Okoth if he doesnt believe in youth? Furthermore, since Oktay arrived only H. Sempala has been signed under him and this is his first preseason with the entire team and a chance to look at the youth team and already three has been promoted. Do you think they were promoted without his advice?
are these signings or promotion of players from junior to senior side. signing to me means New Signing. Not signing a contract amendment.
So far I only an assistant coach has been signed
Heheee!! Let me wait for any waiganjos to come whether an established or not established to come at kogallo
@Nyakwar Ondenge, this is a misplaced comment on Waiganjo. Running the club is not a walk in the park. We all need to respect the excomost for better performance.
some people here are not happy with everything, our recruitment team has been doing their work very well for the last few years, its a process, its not so that easy, you cant say they recruit Waiganjo my friend, players failing to perform in a club is normal worldwide, you can sign a good player and he fails to perform
Huyu Waiganjo ni nani? Ni wa timu gani?
@Jagem huyu waiganjo includes top paid player in GM MZee Oliech, Mustafa (anguka Chini Kama Umesimama) Ssekisambu, Fat Brazilian, Friendly Match Brazilian (Zemaria guy) & guikan etc
Mustafa is a first eleven in a team at the AFCON that should tell you his quality. Ze Maria was a good coach and finished second after picking the team from relegation after Nuttal went five games without a win. How is he Waiganjo? Ssekisambu was one of the best players in Uganda Super League before leaving and even earned a call to Cranes squad. Even Sanchez was a great player at Arsenal and a flop at Man United. Buying any player is a gamble and u cant disrespect our scouts that way. It is wrong
So HS has a problem at right back? Calabar, he is not a right back player and that we all know, is really being done by the Tanzanians. Am so sorry for Owino, half time both goals coming through his side!
@Ogolo Yes you have said that there is no money in GM & my quiz to u is that can u compare kaddu of KCCA who already have one goal in caf & our Mzee Oliech who can only manage to play last three minute but earn more salary than kaddu.
Oliech brings more than just playing. Kipkirui and Tuyisenge both confessed to have learnt alot just training with him. Even Oktay has said several times what it means to have Oliech around with the boys. Your perspective of football is very shallow, u only see the 90 minutes. The 90 minutes is just a tip of the iceberg. What a player contributes throughout the week to the team is much more.
I stand to be corrected, any serious Brazilian player will not play in Africa. Those that are joining Simba are Waiganjos and should not bother anybody.
@Jakoyo is right. See below link.
