Police are investigating an incident in which a group of Gor Mahia fans were attacked by unknown people along Landhies Road, Nairobi, robbed and injured.
The fans were marching from City Stadium to the city centre celebrating the win of their team against Western Stima when a confrontation broke out near Muthurwa Market between them and a group of traders.
Some of the attackers also wore green t-shirts that the team usually dons. Several people were injured and property destroyed as the confrontation lasted for hours without police on sight.
The incident affected business in the area for several minutes before police intervened and dispersed the fighting groups using teargas canisters.
The fans usually march to Tom Mboya Street where they congregate after every march in the city before dispersing.
Nairobi police boss Benson Kibui said they want to know who the attackers were.
“We are aware of the incident but we do not know how it started. We are investigating,” he said.
Some fans said police took too long to respond and that the attack could be political with an agenda.
these cowards stabbing a lady!!!!!
Let me wait for the bloggers who’ll come here and say she was a bang smoker, or was singing political songs, therefore deserved to be killed by the ‘traders’
This is Sad. I personally enjoy teasing Gor’s fans every time I get an opportunity. However, Killing or physically causing harm to anyone be it a Gor fan, a hawker or any fan for that matter is completly unacceptable and the culprits must be brought to book.
LETS ORGANIZE A PEACEFUL MARCH/DEMONSTRATION DEMANDING POLICE PROTECTION / ACTION BE IT AT MUTHURWA, ALONG THE HIGHWAYS TO/FROM AWAY GAMES. LETS INVITE INTERNATIONAL PRESS COZ WE SIMPLY CAN’T ALLOW THESE INJURIES AND LOSS OF LIFE SITUATIONS.
FANS MUST DEMAND THAT EC ALSO ENGAGES POLICE FULLY SO THAT THE BHANG SMOKERS AND GATE CRASHERS AT THE STADIUM ARE ARRESTED.
THE SOLUTION TO HOOLIGANISM IN/OR OUT OF THE STADIA IS SIMPLE.
1.ARRESTS 2. PROSECUTION 3.CONVICTION.
We need to name and shame fans who we believe are hooligans.Football is a game. And games must have fans, celebrations are in order. But being hospitalized after your weekend out is…….
If EC can not cushion us against this routine of attacks then they will watch the games and raise gate revenue themselves. Kenyans has the right to life and enjoy it in our motherland and city Nairobi, why must muthurwa be ZONED for the green GM jerseys????????
This attacks are now political, it has happened starting before elections when we were attacked along Nairobi Nakuru highway free area. I dont think that Gor mahia fans are prepared for war when going for matches. I think its the duity of police officers to offer security for every kenyans of which i think gor mahia fans are in the bracket of kenyans. Its very painful to be loosing our colegues along Muthurwa where police are stationed.Let this stop it will bring a lot of problems to kenyans. Amen
What a shame, why are malicious people spoiling the name of Gor Mahia Football Club. If you you not a fan and cannot play, kindly stabb and organize terror on innocent people. These attempts on peaceful fans will not take you anywhere. By the way if you are a wise trader why not sell your goods to these readily available market.
An unfortunate incident.
This report looks to have contradictions.
(Several people were injured and property destroyed as the confrontation lasted for hours without police on sight.
The incident affected business in the area for several minutes before police intervened and dispersed the fighting groups using teargas canisters)
So it means that the business was only disrupted for a few minutes yet the confrontation lasted for hours. To me the solution is GM to meet the hawkers and define how both can avoid this confrontation. There is no harm in doing this. Remember otherwise it will be dangerous to attend Gor matches for the faint hearted as well as donning gor merchandise. As it is Gor will be the loser and not the hawkers. As Gor what brings us together is the love for our club yet the hawkers it’s livelihood
So sad that a lady who was just savouring her team’s win ends up like that. This must come to an end!! However, I do not think Kenya Police will do anything about it; they have never done anything before. Moreso if it were political because they would be complicit with it.
I have always emphasized the need for self-policing. This includes avoiding behaviours that could attract bad elements to infiltrate us and act badly on our behalf.
