Sofapaka got 25m for Razak and Gor Mahia got zero for Abondo?

Chairman Ambrose Rachier has announced that Ali Hassan Abondo has left the club. This is good and a club should never prevent a player from pursuing greener pastures. What is perplexing is that fact that Gor Mahia does not get a single cent in transfer fees.

There is no money the club got in that move because what was done was a termination of contract as per his request and that made him a free agent. We would have wish to get something but everything around that was a little bit tough and we couldn’t stand on his way” said Chairman Rachier according to futaa.com

The fact that Abondo still had a year left on his contract means that Gor Mahia were entitled a transfer fee. This is standard practice all over the world. But you need not go to far to find good examples. Next door neighbours Sofapaka led by astute businessman Elly Kalekwa would never dream of letting a player go free. When Burundian defender Razaka Fiston left for Mamelodi Sundowns, Sofapaka pocketed US $250,000 which translates to Ksh 25 million at current exchange rates.

On top of that, Kalekwa has ensured that Sofapaka will get 20% of the next transfer fee involving Fiston. Since Abondo’s  ontract was tarminated, it is not clear if Gor Mahia are entitled to anything going forward.

And how is it that Gor Mahia must pay Rwanda Police Ksh 4 million for Tuyisenge? yet give players away for free. And was a physical ever done on Tuyisenge to determine his fitness before a contract was signed? For all we know, Tuyisenge could be injury plagued for the next year or so.

The Abondo saga is just the latest in a list of players pushing the club around. Some missed the entire pre-season, some have refused to obtain passports, some are openly rude to the team coach.

In Abondo’s case, Sundowns likely told Abondo’s agent to push for a free transfer because they did not want to pay any transfer fees. How did Gor Mahia find this acceptable? The fans need some answers.

  • Meanwhile, when we say that the EC is useless, rotten and unprofessional some fellows are busy defending them, including the clueless Patron. Gor Mahia will only be failed by the EC. Everybody can be changed, chased and fired but with the current crop of fellows in the EC, not even Mourhinho can succeed here.
