Why it makes sense to Sserunkuma back

With Dan Sserunkuma having terminated his contract at Simba, he is now an unrestricted free agent and will be available for signing starting in June. It cannot be gainsaid that Sserunkuma is one of the best strikers ever to don the Kogalo jersey. In 2013, with arch rivals AFC breathing down Gor Mahia’s neck, Sserunkuma went on a scoring spree that secured Gor Mahia’s first title in 18 years and perhaps the most important title in the club’s history save for 1968. And in 2014, Sserunkuma tallied more goals than any other striker as he once again steered Gor Mahia to another title.

Yet Sserunkuma still has unfinished business at Kogalo and has plenty more to accomplish. If you look at the list of legendary strikers at Gor Mahia, most did not win three league titles. Ouma “Chege”, Maurice Ochieng, Oluoch “Lule”, Peter Dawo “Omuga” each only won one league title. The only exception is Hezborn Omollo.

Sserunkuma has an opportunity to cement his place in the pantheon of greatness that is Kogalo by winning a 3rd title. Not only can he help the club to another title but he can also help the club to additional trophies, most notable the FKF cup, the Super 8 and who knows, perhaps even the CECAFA cup. This is a trophy that Gor Mahia has not won in 30 years. There is not a better way to cement your legacy than by winning the CECAFA cup.

Some have said that Gor Mahia already have too many strikers. This is easily proven false. To begin with, coach Nuttall sometimes deploys a line-up that has three out and out attackers including Timothy Otieno with Kagere and Olunga. Secondly, Kagere can play as an attacking midfielder, a position he plays very effectively. And keep in mind that players like Olunga and kagere will often be missing due to international duty. When one of them is missing, the attack can be left blunt as happened last weekend.

Last weekend Gor Mahia also suffered from playing three league games in a space of 8 days. The resultant fatigue was a factor in their dour performance against Western Stima, which is why the club needs depth. This is especially true as the club approaches the second half of the season which brings with it the CECAFA cup, Top 8 and FKF cup. All this means that when Gor Mahia come back from the CECAFA cup in August, they will have a backlog of matches. They will often play 3 matches a week. So the notion of having too many strikers is a non-starter especially when you consider that based on current form, Only Olunga and Kagere are effective.

But even more importantly , Sserunkuma has proven before that he can single handedly win matches for you and he can score goals from seemingly impossible positions. Does anyone recall the header against Chemelil at City stadium last season? Musa Mohamed floated what looked like a useless ball since it found Sserunkuma out of position, surrounded by taller defenders and facing the away from the goal. But Sserunkuma had the wherewithal to flick the ball with his forehead into the net past the bewildered Chemelil custodian. It will be comical if the club EC passes up the chance to re-sign him, especially if he goes to AFC, a team that rejected him when he went there for trials in 2011.

Coach Nuttall knows Sserunkuma. He worked with him for 6 months last season and he can easily fit back in. For Sserunkuma, the main reason to come back is to cement your legacy at Kogalo. Also you would be playing with team-mates you are familiar with and you will be able to hit the ground running. And this is a fan base that already considers you a hero. You cannot fail at Kogalo.

It is inevitable that there will be a shake-up at Gor Mahia during the June transfer season. Some players will leave to seek greener pastures. Some will be dropped and some will join the club. I say bring Danny Flava back even if it for a 6 month contract.

  • Sserunkuma should be taken back. Even though he was not my killer striker his productivity is higher than Blackberry or Timothy Otieno. Sserenkuma’s main undoing is that he lucks a killer instinct and he had began to take into the ‘wenye Gor’ attitude. I hope his rejection at Simba will wake him up. Kagere is not only a good holder but his assists are perfect. Sserenkuma cannot cope with the high balls that coach Bobby resorted to.
    My advice;
Re-join Gor get back your killer instinct and never look back. Do this and I’m sure another big club will come for you. Look at Kagere, that’s a player with a killer instinct.

  • That means we have to drop one of our foreign legion. If Walusimbi terminates his contract as threatened will make our work easier. If by God’s grace we manage to hold on to Walu then Emuge Or Pierre will have to make way. Having Danny back is a top priority.

am not sure we need him.in kagere and olunga supported by abondo we have the most lethal strike force in kenya.
unless sere accepts a bit part rile we can take him back but at the expense of timo or blackberry whose performances so far has been disappointing.
as the saying goes..”if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.our current strike force is doing well!!

Gor mahia are spending Sh600, 000 per month to pay for accommodation expenses of head coach Frank Nuttall, Goal can reveal.
The coach is currently staying at Silver Springs Hotel where a standard room costs Sh15, 000 per day. Gor Mahia have been forced to move the coach to a hotel as they continue looking for an apartment for him.
An official of the club, who asked not to be named, said efforts are being made to get an apartment as the current costs cannot be sustained. “An apartment would cost us maybe Sh150, 000 or at most Sh200, 000. We are yet to get a suitable one but soon we hope it can be sorted out,” said our source.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier is shouldering the burden of paying the accommodation expenses and also salary of the coach. Gor Mahia have no sponsor since Tuzo pulled out last season and have been relying on well-wishers to run their affairs.
The Scot joined K’Ogalo close to the end of last season after replacing coach Bobby Williamson and went on to hand the club a 14th Kenyan Premier League crown. He has started the season on a good note as Gor Mahia are topping the sixteen table with an unbeaten record after eleven matches

Ok he deserves a place with the legends of the club…but do we need him. Well maybe. But right now, this minute, with the vastly experienced Kagere, the hard running Olunga and the impossibly talented Abondo…do we need him? I say nay-nay.

First off, Sserunkuma hast had any play time this year, and having been dropped from Simba, his confidence has definitely taken a beating,. It will take him time to rediscover his form. How long that will take is anyone’s gamble.

K’Ogalo should refrain from squad immorality and greed and only purchase the players they need. The club isn’t at a good place financially. Why not just replace the players who’ll leave the club in June instead of acquiring Ssere just because he is available?

  • Breaking news!!!!!!!!!! Danny Sserunkuma rejoins Gor Mahia for the second leg of the TPL.Sweetest thing is that he also told Ingwe he is not a tad bit interested in their lame attempts to secure his signature. @ oswozo moziek, Sserunkuma scored 16 goals last term. while Olunga scored 9. That is the only parameter i use to judge who is better. Which one are you using?

  • @dinga, I agree with your sentiments on one condition. It will not be a walk in the park. The two guys you have mentioned have been struggling so much. It was evident when they played the Western Stima game. This is good for them because each will raise up their game. Other wise you could find yourself on the bench most of the time. Otherwise He is such a hard working player which I think will add value to the team.

  • K’Ogalo have confirmed to Goal that they have re-signed Ugandan striker Dan Sserunkuma who terminated contract with Tanzanian giants Simba SC

Gor Mahia have officially confirmed that Ugandan striker Dan Sserunkuma will rejoin the side for second leg of Kenyan Premier League.

Sserunkuma, who terminated a two year contract with Tanzanian giants Simba SC on Monday, has agreed to rejoin K’Ogalo thus ending speculcations linking him with a move to rivals AFC Leopards and other clubs abroad.

Gor Mahia official Anima Ferrari confirmed to Goal latest return of the Ugandan hit man. “We have agreed to re-sign Sserunkuma but other details will be out before end of the week. Sserunkuma will be available to turn out for us at the start of second leg in June.”

Ferrari also confirmed that the club will now be forced to drop one foreigner to accommodate Sserunkuma. “The coach will make up a decision on who to be dropped. You know very clearly that a club in Kenyan Premier League is entitled to five foreigners and with the arrival of Sserunkuma we have six.

“This will be done before the second leg starts. I am happy that Sserunkuma as decided to return home. We all love him having helped us to two league titles and his return will boost our quest for a third consecutive title.”

The foreign-based legion in Gor Mahia roaster include Meddie Kagere (Rwanda), Goddfrey Walusimbi, Khalid Aucho and Israel Emuge (Uganda), Abouba Sibomana and right back Karim Nizigiyimana (Rwanda).

Sserunkuma is said to have declined an offer to join rivals AFC Leopards. “Yes I heard that Ingwe were after my services but to be sincere…I was not interested.” Goal had reported earlier on Thursday that Sserunkuma had already settled for a move to the league champions.
