Give Polack stability and he can work wonders

Polack has worked in a difficult environment. Give him stability and he will deliver trophies

Gor Mahia coach Steve Polack was a happy man after Gor Mahia’s 4-1 demolition of arch rivals AFC Leopards. It marked the first time either team has scored four goals since 1975 when Gor Mahia hammered their rivals, then known as Abaluhya FC 5-1.

“I’m over the moon. It is unbelievable after a scrappy first half, we ended up winning. I’m really proud of my players. They showed the true character of a champion. The half-time pep-talk won it for us,” said a delighted Polack.

Polack showed yet again that he knows how to get the best out of his players. Gor Mahia were below par in the first half and Polack read them the riot act at halftime.

“Honestly speaking, in the first half, we were very poor, we were very awful and we did not deserve to come out 0-0,” Polack told goal.com.

“But when we went into the dressing room, I challenged my players to bring out what they were hiding in the first half. I shouted at them, I was almost throwing bottles at them and I guess it worked for us.

“It was a good display in the second half as we controlled the match from the first whistle. The half-time talk proved the difference because I sensed the style AFC Leopards were playing and asked my players to try another route, put the ball down and avoid long balls.” he continued

The stellar second half display shows that given a modicum of stability, Polack can get the best out of his players. He has shown this before.

Polack arrived right before the first leg against Aigles of Burundi. Many coaches would have sat the match out. Polack took charge immediately. He studied his opponents and come the second leg, Kogalo destroyed the Burundian side 5-1.

Airing bad news

Things have not been rosy at Kogalo this season. And Polack has not been shy about airing the bad news. For one thing Polack had to make do with a limited number of players. Key players like Yikpe, Miheso and Afiriyie were not registered for continental football.

” I said earlier, when you have things which are disturbing you mentally it doesn’t help, like having only 16 fit players and we have three goalkeepers and it means you have 14 players to play, and when you ask me if I don’t have enough players to play in several positions whom I am supposed to play?” posed Polack.

Imagine having a player available in local matches but not available for continental football. This makes it difficult to test your game plan in real game situations.

Polack has had to deal with players going AWOL. Joash Onyango and Kenneth Muguna went missing before the match against Motema Pembe while the entire team boycotted training before the match against Mathare.

Yet Polack continues to keep the club afloat. Give him a stable playing unit and he can take the club into the stratosphere.

Fans don’t want to hear bad news?

Gor Mahia went through an entire week that was nothing but bad news. from being eliminated from continental football, to losing their unbeaten record, unpaid wages and former players predicting doom and gloom.

Coach Polack was not shy about discussing the problems but neither was this blog. One blogger actually asked this author to stop posting negative stories. But sweeping bad news under the carpet doesn’t solve the problem. If the players still can’t pay their bills due to unpaid wages. As such they may not be in the right frame of mind.

In fact they were clearly not in the right frame of mind in the derby until Polack read them the riot act at halftime.

Don’t get carried away

The 4-1 against their rivals could lead fans to think that all the problems facing the club have been washed away. In reality the club EC must continue to work diligently to ensure that the playing unit is motivated. The fans must also do their part even if it means contributing directly to the club. Chairman Rachier can increase fan participation by enhancing transparency.

Yikpe with a virtuoso performance

Not much had been seen of the towering Ivorian Yikpe Gnamien since he arrived. Fans had been waiting with bated breath to see what the towering Ivorian was capable. Some fans had written him off, declaring that the foreign signings have been a let down.

But his commanding performance against Ingwe must have silenced any naysayers.

First his powerful header nearly decapitated the Ingwe defender who tried the goal line save with his head. Legendary heading specialist Peter Dawo would have been proud. That header was similar to the first one he scored against AS Dragons of Benin in 1987.

Then Yikpe initiated his second goal by fending off a both a defender and the touchline. Then he found Miheso with a precise pass. Miheso in turn squared back to The Ivorian who scored with a clinical finish.

His celebration was one of raw emotion as if he was saying that all his efforts have finally paid off.

“I am very happy for the player, He works very hard in training and it was good for him to open his account. He has always deserved to score and today [Sunday] it was his day, I am very happy for him.” said coach Polack about the Ivorian.

Yikpe is a baller. The fans will need to play their part in helping Gor Mahia fend off the advances of our Dar es Salaam neighbours.

Class all around

It was a total team effort. No player deserves more ecredit than the others. But some moments from this match will be seared in the memory of fans.

Firstly Miheso’s rocket that resulted in the 3rd goal. It left the Ingwe goalkeeper hapless. This after his sublime pass to Yikpe had resulted in the second goal.

Then came the 4th goal. Boniface Omondi sold a dummy the Ingwe defender chasing shadows. He then sent a precise pass to wide open Lawrence Juma who made no mistake.

Another player who earned reviews was Bernard Ondiek who despite being played out of position at full back, acquitted himself well. The full back positions have been problematic for Kogalo especially due to injuries to key players Shafiq Butambuze , Philemon Otieno and now Wellington Ochieng is injured again.

    We did it in Nov14.
    We can do it again.
Let’s start an independent salary trust fund for guaranteeing direct payment of players and TB salaries and allowances only (including PAYE,NSSF and NHIF).
EC retains the day to day management of the club
25,000 members means a monthly contribution of kes.120 each, 10k members means a contribution if 300 each.
    Let’s keep it affordable.
As Ambayo says a monthly financial statement MUST be published monthly by 15th.
    @BB keep at it, Sir.

Congratulations to the team for the sweet victory over our erstwhile opponents who have recently flattered to deceive in recent times.

Thanks BB for the continued pressure to raise funds for our players.

I like what oduor12 has posted. Now that is accountability at its best. Since oduor12 already knows the ropes I think we should let him proceed as is and give us the way forward for this noble initiative… Thanks all. We can manage this. Over to you BB and oduor12.

Good morning team. Thank you my brother Oduor12 for retrieving that powerful evidence from the archives. That is the strength of teamwork. I want to draw your attention to bro. George Ambayo’s post which actually adds voice to what Nyarkopolo had suggested:
    George Ambayo says:
    November 11, 2019 at 3:45 am
@ BB as I congratulate Gor Mahia TB and the players for a job well done.
Oduor 12 had proposed a monthly contribution of Kshs 120 per month and I want to add that you form a legal entity with a liaison office that will coordinate us as well as mobilise Gor Mahia followers with an aim of registering 25,000 or more members in a WhatsApp group sh monthly paying an annual membership fee of Kshs 200 and monthly contribution of Kshs 120 into an exclusive mpesa or paybill number you will give us. Thereafter ALL registered players whether injured or not are paid directly by way of deposits into individual players bank accounts strictly observing and adhering to KRA tax regulations by our liaison office.

Then we publish Incone and Expenditure Account on a monthly basis. As pace setters of Financial accountability and transparency

Personally I am very happy with this suggestion and if any of us thinks of fine tuning it to improve on efficiency, please let us feel free. Fellow bloggers this is an idea whose time has come. Let us rolll up our sleeves and get to work. Remember the EC is following this closely and I believe they are sure it won’t kick off. Let’s do it team.

May I add that the Linda GM brand initiative was 100% digital. We never met physically at any time. It succeeded due to the honesty, transparency, accountability and prompt financial reporting on the status of the initiative.
1)You send your and post your contribution,
      2) Once your contribution is confirmed it was updated on this wall and the new cumulative total declared, AT ALL TIMES THE TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED WAS KNOWN TO ALL.
      3) At the end of the excercise the money was handed over directly to the players led by Innocent Mutiso
It was also 100% geared towards the players welfare nothing more, nothing less.

    • how do we get into that whatsapp group? I am willing to donate that monthly contribution as long as the gor mahia EC stays away from that money. Give it directly to the players.

Our mission is clear. We only want to redeem the pride of K’Ogalo. Something that even the EC aspires for. We are therefore making this move not to fight the EC, but to compliment them. Ours is the playing unit. I strongly believe we shall put the right structures in place and rope in a massive following for K’Ogalo, all duly registered members….and that will come with a stable financial base for our boys’ salaries throughout the year. I look forward to seeing us providing comprehensive health insurance covers to every player who will don the K’Ogalo green, white or blue.

Bloggers this is the time. As the cheering band beats their drums singing ‘Wan watiyo ni Gor’ they feel proud of their contribution. Let us also use this project to work for K’Ogalo and be proud of ourselves. All these for our love of Gor Mahia and to the glory and honour of God.

After such a vituoso performance against the noisy neighbors aka Leopard, the least you can do is to automatically add my name to any activity (legal) that will add value to the brand called Gor Mahia. My heart and soul is in it. I breath Got Mahia and therefore I shall take jersey no 18, once famously donned by El Capitan (Haroun Shakes Shakava). The man who captained Gor Mahia for 3 years and never lost or drew a match against AFC Leopards. Alishinda yiote and won 5 KPL titles. When do we start the contributions? I’m ready!!!!!

@Le Pastre you have added voice to those who stated that this course must be legal. So we must heed that. We must do things right from the beginning. The contributions will start once things are legal. I have given out a text message contact number. Bloggers let us establish contact. Things will move faster once we start discussing on phone. Meanwhile, since I am still in Nairobi, I will try and seek to meet AR and brief him on this. I hope he is not travelling with the boys to Libya.
