Sportpesa suspends sponsorship of Gor Mahia and AFC

Unruly fans have once again put the club in a tight financial spot as betting firm sportpesa has announced the suspension of its sposorhip for Kenya’s two biggest clubs.

Additional reporting from futaa.com

Betting firm SportPesa has announced its suspension of sponsorship for local football giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

SportPesa Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri made the terse announcement on Tuesday afternoon at a high powered press briefing citing hooliganism which he said is tainting their brand.

“Its not an easy decision but one which we have taken.Tough decisions at times force changes. We need to do something drastic.”

Karauri was  flanked by FKF president Nick Mwendwa,KPL chief Jack Oguda and Supersport General Manager Auka Gecheo.

FKF on its part announced that clubs that perpetrate hooliganism will from now henceforth suffer heavy penalties including relegation for repeat offenders ,monetary fines and docking of points amongst others.

While issuing the statement, Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri termed it as unfortunate that it had come down to the tough decision hence placing the stakeholders under such circumstances but insisisted that it was time we do something to curb hooliganism which the company fully supports.

However his statement had a lifeline for the clubs with an indication that the package may be reinstated as soon as possible depending on the two club’s official meetings with the company.

Meeting

-We have summoned the officials of the teams to meet within the week and we will reinstate this sponsorship once we are satisfied that actions are being taken to curb this vice that has gripped football, he said.

-Sponsors will not just sit back and watch as our brand is tarnished. I think we have done so much to enhance security but all these will be in vain if the teams cannot control the fans, he added.

In the presser, the Football Kenya Federation [FKF] also stipulated rules to curb hooliganism in the country with Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri referring to the Saturday 16th April’s match pitting Gor Mahia away to Tusker FC at the Nyayo National Stadium.

On the stated match day, the match was forced to stop for a moment after referee awarded the Brewers a penalty and the match pitting AFC Leopards against Ulinzi Stars on Saturday 23rd April where fans’ protest forced match officials to call it a day on the match’s 80th minute.

The sponsorship for both teams (AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia) were to run for five years from 2016.

  • AFC Leopards and Gor bring more fans to the stadium than all the other teams combined. Having, said that, both of these two teams get the same cheque as sony, Muhoroni, H’boyz etc at the end of each month. The unfair distribution of funds by KPL coupled with the high demand for security (due to high number of fans) forces these two clubs to hire unprofessional stewards instead of well trained security officers and end up finding themselves in trouble. It is time for both clubs to say enough is enough and demand a better package based on their fan base in order to pay some of these pressing needs (such as security )

@Ingo I do concur with you. If we can all remember that this Sportpesa locked out Betway from sponsoring both Gor Mahia and AFC Ingwe when they heard from other sources that Betway will be sponsoring both Gor Mahia and AFC. Our officials fails to read between the line on Sportpesa which is just a local entity with owners known where they are coming from.

The two clubs could have gone with Betway due to international appeal and network that have have helped and exposed our players to EPL. Betway is the main sponsor of West Ham.

Threats in this modern age of competition does not augur well with the game of football. Instead of helping the two clubs in curbing hooliganism, FKL, KPL and Sportpesa are busy gunning up to punish the great clubs. What is needed is sobriety in curbing hooliganism but not threats and Sportpesa as well as other stakeholders need to come up with a broad approach on how this menace can be curbed.

I know that there are plans to destroy non institutional clubs particularly Gor Mahia and AFC. This plans will not work even if they give Tusker and Mathare Kpl league through the backdoor.

Fans need to stand firm and say big no to intimidation.

We have seen worse cases of hooliganism in countries like Turkey, Greece, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and even Brazil but such act of threats have never been the case. Hooliganism used to be very high in countries like England and Italy but all stakeholders came up together with ways of reducing the menace and they succeeded but still there are isolated cases of hooliganism in these countries.

Kpl, FKL, Sportpesa, Sports Ministry, internal Security and other stakeholders need to borrow a leaf from England, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands on methodologies of reducing all forms of thuggery and hooliganism both in the stadium environ and outside along the streets.

The sport is one of the way of giving jobs to youths and reduction of criminal activities associated with youths and young people with excess energy. We can keep our youth from social crimes such as drugs addiction, bhangi smoking, robbery with violence etc through sports.

I do not support hooliganism and threats with no basis foundation. Club can identify the culprits but can’t prosecute the culprits as the clubs do not have mechanisms of doing it. Sportpesa has continued to dominate sponsorship of football which is really against the Competition and Monopolies Act. Can lawyers look at this act and advice the two clubs. We all need a level playing ground for sports to thrive but not monopolistic attitude which has been adopted by KPL in meaning football activities in the country. Monopoly has no place in modern open market practice where competition is allowed to thrive.

Look at Sportpesa sponsorship money allocations by Kpl to Gor Mahia and AFC clubs with huge fan base. It is pity that the two clubs are getting peanuts as the sharing allocation is lopsided.

As sportsPesa and the federation comes up with all those sanctions, let them also tell us what sanctions they will give to corrupt/biased match officials who more often than not are the reasons behind dissent on the pitch as has been the case in the Gor game.
Match fixing by the refs will now be very easy coz they know they are now “protected”!!

They have a right to demand proper behavior, they are in business. Let’s be very careful about what we say on such matters, I will urge everyone who cares about the future of these clubs and more importantly welfare of the poor players to jealously defend these sponsorships. Again we need understand the social environment in which the two clubs are operating. Remember you have enemies every where. You are not so much loved by people of different divides, and the more you sink down the drains the happier they are.

Anyclub in the world with many fans do experience chaos at times, even Nigerian national team recently when played agains Egypt experinced this when fans invaded the field in protest aginst poor officiating by the refaree. The best solution that i can guarantee sportpesa is simple and clear, we as fans we’re soon going to start watching Gor and AFC matches on screen because as soon as fans attend matches from the pitch then they will automaticaly reacts to poor officiating that Kenyan refarees are known for. I want to quote one Luo proverbs that states that “WUON ONGET KATA DHOGE DUM TO OK KWER, KIWUOYO TO ININDO KOYO” We are not even allowed to cough because we are being sponserd!!!!!! Ningumu hii.

This happens in the world all over and they should not form thetrend of dectating us. we will not allow it around so they be careful. Of course we know how to behave and we would also want to be seen doing well with behaviour but not when incompetent referees employed by FKF touch our feet on the wrong way. we will be sorry when refs give penalties that are uncalled for.

    Reply
  • SPOT PESA wants FIX Matches. If Gor and AFC are strong that will be a sure bet and they would be bound to pay because of less odds

It is now clear the referees are given specific instruction to ensure the gamblers do not win even if it means making decisions that are unsporting. They have clear instructions to fix matches And this is what is creating a serious problem an hooliganism who still want to have the beautiful game decided on the pitch

For sport pesa to force clubs to behave in the way they want and deny them money, they are in effect FIXING matches. They will fix matches right from FkF – Nick Mwendwa, Referees and even influence players “kando” to give them the results they want and not for nothing. FKF and Sport Pesa will soon be fixing matches if they are not doing so already.

If they have a brand that is not compatible with football, they should ship out. ASAP. Where was this brand before the sponsorship anyway. Do such yester company who just want to ride on AFC and GOR brand even pay for goodwill? AR please let us know. They can keep their brand and they keep theirs.

I am shocked by the kind of incoherent and illogical comments coming through on this matter. We appear to be mixing very many issues in this otherwise simple thing. My brothers (and sisters?) are we saying that we have a right to behave in any way we like just because we have a club to support? And that it also happens in other places? And that there is poor officiating? And also that you “love” your team so much so that you do not want to be corrected? Oooh naaaa, come off it. That’s what I call nonsense.

Sportpesa could very well move out today and the world moves on leaving you people standing there in great angst ruing and cursing the gods for not guiding willing sponsors your way. I doubt if any right thinking sponsor will as much as want to touch these teams with a 10 m long rod. Remember, on our own, we have tried all sorts of ventures to raise money for the team in the past and none of them succeeded.

This is what I think. I expect attacks from all corners.

Dear K’Ogalo family, it is a fact that we support this team with a lot of passion. I however, think that some people take it too far. I think that passion if not checked and guided by the individual can lead to destruction. When an individual for example is upset and picks any object and throws into a crowd, what are the possibilities that this could land on any one including one owns relative. I think that any individual who claims to be willing to die for K’Ogallo should do so by courting more people to attend matches. Of course when sport pesa joined the fray of sponsoring our team, they were not going to do it for nothing and have no say. That would be illogical. The other thing we do not have to copy bad examples as in because there were riots in Nigeria or else where, we should also handle things in the same way. As K’Ogallo family we can set our own standard for people to emulate. We recently did by keeping our team propped up until they worn the league unbeaten. My take therefore is to appeal to Sportpesa that after the discussions with the EC and all concerned, to rescind their decision and resume the sponsorship. It means a lot to every player whom we hope to see performing well at every game. When there is food on the table and a roof over their head then they are at peace.

Guys, as much as I support a sponsor demanding the purity of their brand out there in the market I also believe the sponsors job should not just be dishing out money. How I wish the sponsor should take their time before or during half time or organize a fans day for ingwe/gor to explain to fans what it means to them to sell/brand their product through Gor/ingwe. Something like we do in elections called civic education. Suspending sponsorship yet they still sponsor the league is like shooting themselves in the foot. It’s rue Gor and Ingwe need the sponsorship but what if BetWay took that chance and everything ran smoothly for both teams. The winner will be BetWay since all those other clubs don’t even raise a quarter of the fans that Gor/Ingwe have.

On fans let’s protect our clubs from goons , some of who could be perpetrating a different/political agenda. Let’s behave and the sponsors will come in great numbers

  • The phenomenon that defines a casino has been replicated in the Mashemeji matches. Sportpesa assesses the betting pattern then manipulates the results of our matches. Sportpesa emerged from the pits of hell while flaunting sponsorship in the right hand but hiding exploitation in the left hand. Now we know why Gor should not win matches.
We are tired of the word ‘hooliganism’ but more so the frequency with which it is used to describe the only fanatic stronghold in Kenya.
While wagging your sorry tails in the name of freezing sponsorship for these clubs, remember that Betway and other sponsors ran over each other clamouring to take over the sponsorship deal at the start of the season.
The two teams survived last season without sponsors but with mixed results. Where I come from, it is a crime as well as a sin when found begging, except when begging The Almighty Creator.
We are tired of being guided by your reins and ropes simply because you sponsor the Shemejis. Pack and go, stop wasting our valuable time.

It pains me to hear that some of this thugs, goons, warmongers and hate speech operators have been betting on Kogallo or Efusi to win all matches and if the referee does not favour their view- they storm the stadium and either have the match nullified or simply beat up the refeerees. This is just shocking, simply shocking !! Its just a matter of time before a referee is Killed, watch this space.

Fighting hooliganism requires a concerted effort by all the parties, FKF, supporters, clubs, Police and even the sponsors. The big stick approach will not work and has never worked.
Bring on board all the stakeholders including experts in football hooliganism and supporters of the teams concerned and dialogue. If somebody is a hooligan it matters not whether you ban Gor or AFC, he will still be a hooligan and a law breaker.

Let hooliganism be delt with with on individual basis But leave our gor Mahia Club alone.if sportpesa has no professional experts to mnage that company thati s up to them . they better pick their belongings t Gor if there is any and Go to Central where karaura heils from. we will struggle with gor as b4. Afterall we won league three time without a sportchietha sponsorship. please that karaura should keep of Gors affairs with immediate effect.

    • Let no one be cheated. Gor can not make any serious impact internationally without sponsorship. Gor needs sportpesa more than sportpesa needs it. That is the naked truth.
