Gor Mahia postpone Fund Raiser

Governor Kidero has come to the club’s assistance on several occasions

About one month ago, this column penned an article projecting that the planned Fund raiser was likely to fail due to poor planning and unrealistic targets. Someone in the EC must have listened. The club has postponed the Fund Raiser to November 6 and is now targetting to raise KES 20 million. The venue will be Railway club in Nairobi.

According to club official Ronald Ngala, the event’s primary goal is to raise money for the off-season.

“The fund-raiser is meant to help us run the club once the season is over because we will not have gate collections. The most important thing is to retain our best players even before we think about buying new talent,” Ngala told goal.com

With Gor Mahia lacking a sponsor, any money raised would be  useful in shoring up the squad which was depleted by a mass exodus of players in mid-season.

However some of the issues raised in the previous column still have not been addressed. Among other things, there is still very little publicity. Indeed most Gor Mahia fans were not aware of the initial planned date nor are they aware that there is a new date.

Reclaiming Gor Mahia’s land

The guest of honour will be Nairobi governor Evans Kidero who is to be commended for coming to the assistance of the club on several occasions. But the one area he would help the club the most is by enabling the club to reclaim the land it owns in Embakassi. That land was allocated to Gor Mahia by the Moi regime. But due to inaction by the club, it was claimed by squatters. That land could be used to build a training ground and start the club on its way to building an asset base. If the governor of Nairobi cannot reclaim the land for the club then perhaps no one else will.

Exactly the “saga” is the postponement and revising of the figure to 20m. Kshs60m or 100m is/was unrealistic.
Another major reason could be that simply lack of accountability and transparency is also responsible for the poor response to date.
There is no info. on the club’s affairs ama its available only to members.
E.g will some of the money raised be used to pay KRA. What of the bank situation, have the accounts been unfrozen.
You can’t keep 20m in under the mattress or in someone’s account.
However for me personally i concur strongly with Mwakio who has reverted to his former position.
GMFC needs structural change be it a sacco or a company.
I don’t believe that elected officials are inept just that given the weak current structures the lure of mismanaging GM resources is too strong and there are no punitive consequences as a result.
The current structure cannot and will not stem corruption whether real or percieved.
I also strongly echo @ Kassam’s bold statement that Jakom AR (I at one time wrongly believed that all he needed was a change of officers) for reasons best known to himself has not and will not usher in these changes though he has the capacity to. E.g he engineered the bloating of the EC and increase of the office term to 2 years.

  • Let us not loose focus, the most important thing at the moment is defending the kpl trophy. For that reason i would appeal to all to put to rest issues of controversy and on that note i want to wish our boys victory on saturday against city stars.
Just like somebody said that we have five finals, yes this begins on saturday and i would wish that all remain calm in the camp. Best of luck boys.

@ Sylvester, I agree, but what is the point of winning the league in 2014 and losing all our players in January coz there is NO money ? secondly, what is the point of winning the league in 2014 if we are not going to participate in champions league next season ? we cant just be sitting and watching things fall apart !!!!!

You see some things/comments from the EC do not add up please tell them to BETTER SHUT UP UNTIL THE LEAGUE IS OVER AND THEREAFTER WE CAN DISCUSS ABOUT OTHER ‘SERIOUS’ MATTERS.

  • @Jakoya, i concur but what is the reason for competing in any tournament?
I guess your answer is WINNING.
I only asked for a break on contraversial issues so that we focus more on the trophy. Anyway, i hope the EC is listening and if things remain the same then they have got no bussiness occupying those positions.

Seriously Gor Mahia y can’t restructure itself 2 attract a membership of 10,000 persons contributing 500 each i.e 5M per month/60M per year or 15,000 persons contributing 250 each i.e 3.75M/45M per year.
This will be a sustainable income 4 the club rather than the unpredictable harambee route.
Give these members a discounted ticket rate of 150 for the terrace & u raise another 22.5M if only 10,000 of them attend the 15TPL home games.
Yearly income will be at least 67.5M.

The big question is why is GMFC not restructuring into a more professional outfit to exploit its potential & become an soccer gaint in Kenya, CECAFA & Africa once again.

How i wish we all came together to make this harambee successful. The harambee has not been postponed but has been scheduled for November as per official communication from the office.I am a member of a vibrant branch and we are aware of this harambee, the office forwarded invitation cards to all branches and the club CEO has been engaging the chairmen on this noble idea.During our match against Chemelil leaflets on the said function were given out in the stadium and most of us are aware of its existence. The only problem with most of us is that we keep on looking at one side of the coin(faults against anybody and everybody) forgetting that a coin has two sides.

Well said @Jasawagongo. It’s now official that those who attend Gor matches or are interested in the well-being of Gor are aware of the harambee. We have only one month in which we can pull together in one direction. After that we can look at that one side of the coin (as Jasawagongo puts it) till Kingdom come. For those who are not aware the Governor is one of the biggest contributor to gor and has even ‘donated’ his valuable asset to Gor. Yet he doesn’t shout about it. let’s emulate this gesture and even appreciate it.

one of the reasons gor wouldn’t be a big club in the region or in Africa is lack of leadership. no vision at all. compared to teams like tp mazembe, simba, elmereikh. gor will remain big name with small idea. that’s it. why is it so difficult to go the membership way? this one, will give the clear insight where the club is heading to. at this rate, let’s just make unnecessary please, noise hopping manna will come from heaven. blessed

I remember reading a story by the late Nobel Laurate Prof. W. Mathai (RIP). It was about the humming bird which saw the forest burning and made so many trips to the river carrying water on its beak and trying to put out the fire. Though it failed to extinguish the fire at least it made an effort. Very different from us who just lament on how bad things are:- bad office, low qlty players, bad results (draws with lower div teams) etc etc yet doing nothing to correct the anomalies.

lets be honest here….praise and criticism must go in equal measure!!
we shall give credit where its due and in the same breath point out where things go wrong.
Then again,we here are all at a disadvantage. When there is lack of accountability/transparency and corruption at the gates and all other anomalies that is Gor, what can we do??or what are we surely expected to do other than point it out right here hoping it will get to the people “in power” to act…..
    need i say more??

Yes there was a bird, a forest and fire! Who lit the fire?
Is it wrong to criticize the guy burning a public forest?

Look at it this way, GM management have always bought players but equally released players for free! Is that something to applaud? Are we not deliberately losing industrial income then after calling for harambees.. The gates are a mess, this is public and open that guys walk in with 50bob and less, these income avenues could be harnessed by the EC to assist the club never forget the security risk associated with unchecked admission. Is it impossible to streamline merchandise sales?

Its easy to brand people complainants but you can not prove that those pointing out anomalies do not contribute in the ‘harambees’ or pay their gate fees. If you’ve chosen to support the EC for your purposes, its just a choice.

Gentlemen on the issue of transfers lets not blame the office coz even as at now we have like 4 player including the dependable Owino Calabar who have flatly refused to talk about their contracts so if these kind of player opt to go at the end of the season for free how can u help that? honestly last week i happened to meet SG and one of the said players n he flatly refused to back down saying he can discus after the season ends,i even had the SG pleading with him to atleast renew hata for 1yr so that we can atleast get something when he decides to go,so sometime its not easy running this club i realy feel for the guys in the office coz running GOR is not a child’s play.

True critism and applause must be in equal measure. I wish some of the bloggers got that but a situation where if we lose or win it’s the same criticism. As it is our team has no depth like our competitors but the fighting spirit, belief and the fans have brought as this far. And we will go even further so long as we proceed as a group.
On corruption it’s so sad that a gor fan (i believe whoever goes to watch gor play and is in a gor jersey is a fan)will give the steward 50 bob to enter the stadium and later on complain about the players/EC/TB etc.
Some of us have criticized the EC for not marketing the 350100 and membership drive together with the KRA saga but praised them for ensuring that the boys are up there with the best despite our financial position. We also have the medical scheme which was the reason some players were not fully commited. We have a kit sponsor just like the national team.
I still believe that for the other changes we want e.g. the club constitution, opennes etc those can be forcefully implemented through people-power but after the end of the season

Yes Dan, my position is that the EC is doing well concerning upkeep of the players, somehow the bills are paid..it just saddens, actually too much that the gate collections are truly going to the drain.

Its not that some people like quarreling and crying but i feel helpless that the people with the mandate to kill this vice of eating at the gate are doing nothing (i should have said appear to be doing nothing but its been long since this practice started).

Its even worse that you see GM jerseys all over..the someone must bell the cat, can you do that as an individual? NO.

Its sad but we will still go ahead and participate in the Harambee.
