Gor Mahia Coaches

Anaba Awono

Anaba Awono, a Camerounian, had been assistant coach under Zedekiah Otieno “Zico” during the 2011 season. With Zico forced out, he had taken over in a interrim basis. After he led Gor Mahia to win the FKF cup., fans and officials were satisfied that he was good enough to take over as head coach on a full time basis for the 2012 season.

Though a good tactician, with a CAF A license and UEFA B license, Awono was hampered by his inability to vocalize well . Gor Mahia started the 2012 in disastrous fashion. After beating Thika United in the first game, Gor Mahia lost the next three league games. Matters came to a head when Kogalo lost 0-1 to Sher Karuturi. Fans accosted Awono after the game demanding an explanation. When Kogalo inexplicably lost to Mozambican side Ferroviario de Maputo, Awono’s run as coach was terminated along with the rest of the technical bench which was accused of infighting. It later emerged that influential officials were actually dictating the starting line-up to Awono.
